    That point of Nostalgia winning over the newer sets is so true to me. A lot of the time reviewers will judge a set on the minifigs alone and compare it to “ohhh the old one had twice as many” but like, what about the build? Anyway that was a very fun intro, I love this kind of content.

    The 'twice the minifigures' remark made me immediately go to the comparison of Lion Knight's Castle vs Medieval Market Square. Though in this case, the price may be close to doubled, but the minifig count is tripled, the build experience is better, the design is much more involved and intricate and the end display piece is more finished, more polished and more loved by nearly everyone. It turns out that paying 400 dollars is actually netting more value in this case. (assuming you can even afford it)

    Didn't mention this in my original comment due to it not being the question asked, but I really love it when reviews don't just review the sets, granted a plain review can be useful, showcasing the play features, minifigures, etc, but it really limits who will watch the video. I gain so much more enjoyment and interest when a review doesn't just showcases a set, but also showcases it compared to similar models, showcasing possible upgrades, and if it's reviewing an older set, going more in-depth on what lego was doing at that time (like your revisting series) Also I just want to say I really appreciate seeing a video like this, the online lego community is in no way perfect, and seeing you not just talk about issues with the reviewing section of it, but also issues applicable to you was very nice to see!

    Individual reviews are usually fine. what really gets me is when reviewers do like top 10 sets of the year and its like they went to the Lego website sorted by price high to low and just list the first ten they see. It just seems like some channels kind of lose perspective on what makes lego special, more is not always better.

  • @pinobluevogel6458

    @pinobluevogel6458

    Ай бұрын

    While I very much agree with your opinion, the reason all these people come up with top 10 lists, is because it is something people really love to watch. People love their lists man, there is no other way of going about it. And it makes sense that if you make a list without regarding price as a factor, that you get more building experience, play and excitement out of a 400 dollar Lion Knight's Castle than a random polybag. For me, the most exciting things are still having parts at my disposal and slowly designing stuff of my own. Big sets allow way more of that, they speak to the imagination, give you tons of parts and are often great building and display pieces too. It almost seems like that LEGO itself is putting more love and more design quality in bigger sets too, most likely out of necessity of needing to sell it and justifying the insane price point of them.

    It’s interesting to hear how many folks want to be *told* if a set is a good value or not, monetarily speaking. I’ve always personally found that exercise to be largely moot as money itself has a different value to each individual - there is no objective “good deal”, if that makes sense? As an example, when that new DeLorean set came out a few years ago, I rushed out to buy it day one. I didn’t even think of the price tag. But afterwards, I read a bunch of comments from folks debating the price/value of it, when it didn’t even factor into my decision making. I was in a place where I could comfortably drop $200 without batting an eye, but that isn’t going to be the same scenario for everyone. Anyways, great food for thought in this video! That comment about LAN members being able to refuse sets really hit home. Perfect thumbnail too. ❤️

  • @CheeseyStudios

    @CheeseyStudios

    Ай бұрын

    I was always under the same impression too, and it's often why I've omitted the discussion of price from my reviews entirely. It's very surprising to find that that information is clearly important to a lot of people. Depending on where you find yourself in the hobby, I think people watch reviews for a variety of reasons. Ironically, I don't think I've ever turned to a YT LEGO review to determine whether or not I should buy a set, but I suppose it makes sense that people *do* do that! I'm just glad this has sparked some sort of discussion. It's a topic I've felt strongly about for quite awhile, and was a large part of why I even decided to join the KZread space anyway. Putting it into words is a little tricky, but hey, just happy to see the ball is rolling.

Some complaints I personally have with Lego reviews are when people criticize other themes for getting stuff their theme doesn’t have, (Izzie from Dreamzzz has a waist cape, why doesn’t Captain Rex in the $600 Venator have one?) people not showing minifigures in enough detail, not putting in time to learn about the source material for the set they’re reviewing, forgetting about the target audience for the set which might not be the same as them, complaining about the set not being perfect out of the box but refusing to mod the set at all to make it better, & treating Lego as an investment & collectors item instead of a toy for the target age group.

    Such a great video as always, Cheesey; I loved the skit at the start! One issue I have with some reviews is when they disregard the fact that sometimes the designers are given very little to work off of when making a set. Specifically in tv/movie tie-in sets when, say, characters or vehicles don't appear 100% accurate as to how they look in the movie/show - designers are often given concept art that isn't always what the final product will look like and people always seem to overlook this point in most cases and it can be frustrating when they criticise the designers for something that's, most of the time, out of their control! They can only work with what they're given and often times that's very little!

  • @vaimantobe3034

    @vaimantobe3034

    It depends on if they criticise the set as a whole or the designer's job. A product can miss the mark due to the licensing partner... and then it misses the mark. But calling it lazily designed or something would be unfair to the designer. I hate it if people would do that.

Oftentimes, those reviews would have shaky camera work as well on account of the reviewer having to hold the camera or move it when showing features of the set. I personally find that rawness charming because it’s a person talking about their honest impression of a toy‘s playability and their level of enjoyment with it, often without sponsorship or a reputation at stake..

    As I wrote in the post, what really irks me is when a reviewer clearly knows less about LEGO than I do- I've seen a number of situations where the reviewer is like "Wow what a weird new piece!" and it's something that has existed since like 2008. When I watch a review, it's not just to learn about the set, but also the parts that make it- if there's a new part, I wanna hear when it was released, see what kind of attachment points it has, etc. Jang is usually very good at pointing these things out. Also it's very important to me that the play features of a set are clearly shown on camera- LEGO (company) is usually really bad at properly showcasing these, and especially for old sets, sometimes a review video is the only place where you will ever get to see what a set could actually do. Reviewers who fail to do that much are not worth watching in my book.

    I LOVE Jang for his lego reviews, they're brutally honest and I don't always agree with him, but I always appreciate it. But also I HAVE to send love to RR Slugger for having some of the most excruciatingly in-depth retro reviews of sets. Those two reviewers have changed the way I looked at lego. (in a good way)

    Oh my god… Cheesey, THAT, was spectacular! I cannot overstate just how much of an incredible LEGO content creator you are. I genuinely admire how mature and respectful you are about topics, while still having a sense of humor and not beating around the bush. Your humor is on point without being damning to the tropes/types of people you’re poking fun at. I’m so impressed by how professional yet personal your content feels, and that you’re so willing to be self aware and conscious. Truly, you are a very special creator, and an absolute gem in the community. You and your channel feel like the core of what being a LEGO fan is, and should be. I know that’s a big statement, but that’s exactly what it feels like. On the topic of things that we hate seeing in reviews: personally, it really gets on my nerves when people have an issue or nitpick with a certain aspect of a set that can very much be changed, often with just a very simple modification, and they don’t even mention that as a possibility, or worse, get upset, saying things like “you shouldn’t have to change it in the first place”. Or act like it’s unchangeable. Like yeah, I get the frustration if it’s a large aspect of the set or a complex modification, then that can be a pain for sure. But if it’s a case of switching out a few pieces, especially if they’re widely available ones, I personally find that mind set to be really silly. As I mentioned, I often hear that statement of “I shouldn’t have to change anything about the set” or the possibility of doing so isn’t even taken into account, and it absolutely baffles me because… isn’t that the whole point of LEGO?? What an absolute JOY it is to be able to change literally ANY part of the product you get to your pleasing, without having to permanently damage any part of it! That’s truly something amazing that I wish I could do with SO many other types of toys. I think many LEGO fans take that for granted and have completely forgotten the point of LEGO in the first place. Personally? As long as it’s not a case where I have to completely rip apart a set to the point where it’s barely the same thing I bought, I get EXCITED to modify aspects of the set to align more with what I like, and in some cases I DO enjoy completely reworking it! That being said though, the ability to modify sets shouldn’t be an excuse for genuinely bad or lazy design either. I personally would love to see reviewers point out areas where modifications can be made to sets, because it’s such an easy thing that adds so much to the experience 🩵 Anyways, that was my ramble. To anyone who read this far, I hope you enjoyed that, and thanks for taking the time to read all of it heheh :] ✌️

    I honestly really like everything about your format. The more detail, the better, since most of the time you're reviewing stuff I know I'll never own, like really old sets from well-liked themes, or very expensive sets. And, while I'm at it, I like it when reviewers read set numbers. I know they're not important, and I won't remember them five seconds later, but hearing "Set number ______" makes it feel all... I dunno, official, real, or something. And besides, stuff like set numbers, how many sets a part, or minifigure came in, any and all random trivia, is good. I like that.

    Such a great video, even If i´m not consistent at all at doing my reviews, the whole thing of showing your hobbie to someone, and making it the most simple thing to undersand, is hard. Lego reviews have been in my life since youth, either Jang, or others have determinated what I like about a Lego set, and trying to make your own thing out of a product that has been seen so many times, it´s a challenge that makes us to be better at it. Your channel and Tiago´s has determinated what I wanna do as a reviewer, and hope some new and fresh content.

    As someone who has been on both sides of the topic, both reviewing LEGO and watching over a decade of LEGO reviews, I really appreciate this video. Growing up I didn't really have much LEGO at all, so I've always been very thankful for the sets I've been able to collect in my adult years, but it does make me wish there was more of a platform for reviewers who aren't monetarily incentivized. I understand how stuff works, obviously the more viewed you are, the more you're heard, and thus the more likely you're gonna make money off of said review; but I really wish life worked out in a way where people who *can't* afford most LEGO sets could give their opinion. Comment sections are nice and all, but it can't compare to video formats. LEGO on KZread is very much a pay to win field, so that's going to skew opinions in the direction of people who can afford to play that game. I don't think that will ever change, which I am content with, but that does make me very grateful for creators who can recognize how fortunate they are to make money off of LEGO content and who take into account the realistic financial struggles of the majority of consumers.

    Some great points in here. As a super small potatoes LEGO channel that does reviews, I’ll absolutely have to take some of these things in to consideration. And it would likely be helpful for me to ask the few people that do watch my videos about what I could do better. I do try and make sure that I say it’s fun. I don’t make money. The only reason I build LEGO and make videos about it sharing my thoughts are because I enjoy it. So even when I don’t like a set, or don’t think it is good value for the price, I generally say “I had fun building it and I had fun talking about it.”

    I think the thing that burns my bacon is when reviewers will have way too much focus on the minifigures. Like, the figures will take up 3/4 of the video, and if they don't like them, they'll use that as a reason to discredit the set as a whole. I can get valuing figures, but it's a set review. If it's the figures I care about in a set I much prefer just looking up pics and forming my own opinion.

    I really like how you make videos about Lego topics that I haven't really seen, like your weird polybag video😆 I also really like your reviews and that you review old lego themes, the only thing that I would like to see is potentially have a better look at the back printing of minifigures during your reviews, as well as maybe show the spare pieces and sticker sheet at the end of a review, because I find those extra things interesting. That being said I really appreciate the extra research that you do on the pieces of a set, like the new or rare colours for certain pieces and so on
