You have exactly one chapter for me; If a character is introduced halfway into the chapter you have until halfway into next chapter. After that I will ignore all character description in favov of my obviously superior vision. May also occur if I misread a name for an entire chapter, looking at you "Daimen"

Ok fellow writers- is it just me or would it just be SOOO much simpler and easier if we just had a page at the beginning of the book with the characters names listed and then below that- information on what they look like? Like I’m tired of trying to sneak in their looks and it never sounds good- 😭

With a pronunciation guide, I always glaze over the names while I read only to look at the name again a while later and it to not match what I’d been calling them for half the book

Are there any good tips on how to add description without moving away from the plot and not making it cheesy asking for a new writer 😅

@@mominashahzad5372 a quick description of the main characters appearances at the beginning of the book like a few sentences with general appearance like hair color and eye color anything that makes them stand out but save the details for in the book so that the reader add to the base rather than have to completely change it. You could also have a drawing of them at the beginning of the book along with their name though that might be a bit harder/more expensive to do

Oh my god this is so relevant to the "Red Queen" for me. Each time I think I have a character set on appearance in my mind, The author adds in details that completely throws off my overall design in my head and to be honest it annoys me to an extent.

If I have a picture of a character in my head I just ignore the details because I think part of the reading experience is that you get to read it your way. That is also why everyone can have completely different experiences reading the same book.

This is why I would want to add illustrations of my characters in my own book. Whether that'd be on a page before the next chapter, it would make it so much easier for readers to see what the author made their characters to look like.

One of my favorite books is The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa. There are no physical characters descriptions and nobody has names. Only one character who is referred to as “R”. I didn’t even realize until the middle of the book and it was so much easier for me to follow. I suck with names, especially in fantasy because the names really be random as heck.

i love this because youre in the middle of the book and to me thats literally always the death of my interest. i wanna know the character as they start then see them change. not have it thrown at me in the middle. if it didnt serve a purpose in the beginning, why even now

This is the thing i can’t change that, there is this one boom i stopped reading she had weak grow magic. (Like she can make things grow in seconds with just the seeds). I thought she had red hair, freckles, and was wearing s green skirt with a green fluffy top. When i found out she had green hair brown eyes and wore green i stopped reading. I can’t get over that fact😭

These mistakes with the characters’ description is partially the author’s fault since they didn’t describe it good enough. 🤓🤓🤓

This whole book is probably poorly written. And this is coming from someone who forgot a characters eye color, he has glasses and I have Aphantasia so I don't visualize my writing anymore.

This is literally why I don't like reading novels. With my work you get a lot of descriptions all at once, and then just basics like "their braided hair stayed out of the way as they snuck in and out of alleyways with the moon overhead being their only light"
