The Ford GT40 was born and based from the British Lola GT Mk6, so let's not forget that Petrol Heads, then Carroll Shelby worked his Magic. From the Little Acorn the Mighty Oak Tree Grows! The term Legend is way over used today for people who simply don't deserve that title, absolutely not the case for Carroll Shelby, RIP

I have to have one of these in my life... I just have to have one. I'll set mine up to be used more, with more modern components, because I'll actually use it all the time. Well maybe not ALL the time, but as often as I use my motorcycles. This is actually more practical, and safer, when you think about it.

Honestly that's something I've wondered as well. My best guess is that they didn't want to mess with an already tried and proven engine. Ford went back to the MKI since it was a 289 car and just made the engine stroke longer (oversimplification, but not wrong). I'm guessing the mentality was that it's not broken so don't fix it. Doing this also allows the usage / adaptation of some 289 parts (which were extremely accessable and mass produced)

Sorry to correct history, but, holman/moody was the difference in the car's success. Maybe create a vlog to tell the real story from a guy who was there, Lee Holman. Ford brought in Holman/Moody (nascar fame and partnered) when it was apparent Shelby wasn't up to expectations. Shelby had no idea what a racing pit crew did. H/M built the cars, modified the cars, had a stable of drivers and pit crew. What they didn't have was Shelby's marketing program, which Ford later bought ... and is still pushing today. As Lee Holman says, Ford was paying $14 mil annually to H/M to race the GT 40 in the sixties. Shelby's expenses came from H/M.

I was honored to speak to Lee Holman at our team Shelby meet last month. He shared with our group the GT 40 days with us. Holman - Moody and Shelby had sort of a friendly competition. In fact at the end of each race Lee said the teams would take each others cars back to their shop and shared the development. he showed a photo during his presentation of him fueling a car at LeMans . He said he got that job because he was the only person on the crew that didn’t smoke lol.
