Pouteria Caimito | Abiu | Abiu Fruit & Tree

Hello everyone, in today's video we will review the abiu fruit. This was my first time getting my hands on the abiu fruit.
The scientific name for Abiu is Pouteria caimito
This Abiu tree was at my uncle's farm in Cali Colombia. The tree itself had many ripen fruit and I was lucky to get my hands on some fresh Abiu.
The taste of Abiu to me had notes of Star apple (caimito) with the addition of sweet persimmon with subtle notes of burnt sugar.
The abiu seed is important to plant immediately or 1-3 days after the fruit is eaten to guarantee successful germination, the seed itself will not be viable once it dries out.
Abiu is one of my favorite fruits, it is similar in look to the Caimito, or star apple, but in my opinion superior.

Whats up. Didn't see this video of yours. I think I will be the first to fruit this in Georgia. Trees are 3 years old now and getting pretty large. Ordered some fruit today so I have some rootstock to graft to.

Hello, I live in Southern California, I just bought an AIBU tree. Do you think the tree will bare fruits with hand pollinating or maybe by bees? (we have a lot of bees). I don’t have space to plant 2nd tree.

I so want an abiu tree. I've been looking everywhere. The ones I see sold online are all seed grown. I've read that abiu grown from seed can be quite different from the parent tree ( it might end up producing very small fruit with little fresh/pulp and a lot of rind).

Abiu are best grown from seed. Grafted abiu tend to take much longer to fruit and on average grow much slower than abiu from seed. Although abiu can be grafted abius from a good abiu parents typically will produce tasty fruits. It’s best to plant out 2 or more abiu trees and have them in close proximity to have more success with pollination and getting fruits. From my experience growing abiu from seed in Colombia is that the seedlings that I’ve tasted taste almost the same / better than the mother tree. Good luck growing abiu!

There are a few named cultivars , but some abiu may be more rounded than others and some can even appear to be pointy ended
