As a janitor in factory I just rinse them out with water each time. Nothing worse than putting down a broom with dust flying out of it!

Just stick the broom in boiling water for a couple of minutes...melts the frayed bristles back together and cleans them too....its the heat that fixes the bristles.

So important to keep cleaning supplies CLEAN ! Besides manually removing dustbunnies, This is the best broom tool maintenance I have heard of so far. Just a quick rinse every major use, no regular sanitation needed, does need a deeper clean every so often. I will use this method about once a month, or once or twice a season. (At worse, around the time I do an automotive oil change) Thank you for the home remedy, my sinuses will thank you

Why would you ever want to trim the ends, other than just making it look new? When the ends become frayed the bristles go from a large one to many smaller ends that grab even more fine dirt particles. That's why an older broom is more effective at sweeping.
@hoxiefam6731

@@MicahFunk I think the person meant to cut off the ones that bend out and aren't really doing anything anymore. I know exactly what they mean as I can't stand when there's a bent one and then it makes sweeping into the pan harder.
What about hanging up the broom so that the bristles don’t touch the floor? I think this helps a lot with longevity as the weight of the broom doesn’t spread the bristles out over time.

I have found that when my cheap Dollar Tree broom bristles fray, that they pick up all the cat (I have three) fur, all my hair and more light stuff. When it's full of hair/fur I take it to the back yard and sweep it across the rough bark of my tree, or across the thick grass to clean it. Does a stellar job. When bristles are clean and slick, hair/fur has nothing to cling to. Just my observation.
I cut the bottom inch off my broom when it first fray really bad and now it doesn't fray as bad as it did originally. I'll definitely try this to keep it clean!

Who was sitting there one day and decide to pickle their broom? 🤣 Seriously though, this may work due to the killing of bacteria which eat literally everything including your plastic broom bristles. Now I used a steamed mop greatest thing saves me so much time and not hard in the body now that 25 plus years have gone by 🤣

And it makes for a better ride 🎃
I wouldn't put anything with salt & vinegar (ok, potato chips 🤗👍) since they're corrosive substances onto beautiful stone especially tumbled marble. I'd set the broom onto or in glass, plastic or glazed ceramic, a thicker plastic shopping or waste can liner/bag to drain excess vinegar mixture. Mixed together especially, salt & vinegar could/would permanently etch stone, metal or wood.
Be careful putting anything with vinegar and salt , into a tiled area,( shower) to drain. The salt can act like an abrasive on the surface of tiles, vinegar also. Maybe rinse off broom first or let broom sit and drain outside or on a towel .

You said it wasnt science...but NOW I need to know the science behind why this would work. Lol I couldn't find anything that made sense to me. The hot water isnt hot enough to change the structure of the bristles...Polypropylene plastic's melting point is 320° F. PP is also resistent to acids (vinegar)...im going to try this though because i hate frayed brooms. Meanwhile, Ive submitted this question to a chemist. Ik most ppl couldnt care less but I apply science when i create cleaning solutions and the like because it really helps (i mean, thats how products are formulated, right?)...and the chemist will think im insane, but i need to know 😂. If the broom is made from some sort of rubber or composite with rubber, all you need is the white vinegar. Rubbing white vinegar on my bicycle tires for years, get me from getting flat tires rolling over short objects.
To keep the gunk out of your drains, use shampoo and conditioners a little at a time until hair is saturated so you don't let excess fall to the floor(also a safety concern). If that's soap in the shower, the same rule applies. A little at a time on your loofah/wash cloth/etc., making sure the product has been turned from solid/gloop to foam.

@Valentine Solko Keep the gunk out by not making any gunk at all. Something many people just don't think about is how much product they use. Most use too much, and it just goes right into the tub. A slipping hazard, and it stops up your drains. Feel free to understand this better with the added clarification you obviously need. Or don't. Just troll on, clown.

@@Nikybeez she gave her opinion and then ended it with a "thanks though". You ended your reply with an insinuation and an insult. Just because people don't agree with your idea doesn't mean they are right or wrong. In some situations like maybe with children who are sloppy and don't understand using the right amount, you may have a point, but with adults, I think your average adult is smart enough to figure this out on their own. Not to mention, unless you are a viscosity and adhesion scientist, you really have no idea in which form the product is more likely to stick to the walls of the drain. Regardless, people are sharing their opinions and when you resort to insult, then no one wants to listen to what you have to say. And yet, it was obviously intent of your original comment was to help so thank you for that

The one hot tip that witches don’t want you to know
To revive that broom just take a set of shears and snip the "split ends" and any of the wayward pieces. The broom will look and work like brand new. I give my brooms several "haircuts" over their lifespan before retiring them. If they get pet fur and human hair intertwined I use a black barber comb and using either end I pull it through the broom bristles and it pulls out any snags holding the bristles hostage.
