I just changed the port timing on a saw for the first time. Pcked up a 4218 crafstman strato for $20(that ones little brother). They sound like they are gargling under water for a reason. Carb venturi was only 9.5mm. Muffler was a maze. Intake and exhaust timing was 131 degrees . 70% of bore on the exhaust would put you into the muffler bolt holes. Drilled the carb venturi out to 12mm. Widened the exhaust as far as possible. Took exhaust to 152 degrees. Took intake down to bottom of piston with the ring just above exhaust port. Didn't even measure it, probably around 152. Can't widen the intake cause of the strato ports. The saw pulls much, much better than stock now. Easy saw to port, no plating. I doubt it took me 2 hours to tear it down, port it, and put it back together. I think those numbers are about the best for the saw. Shoot for 150 on the exhaust then take the intake down to the bottom of the piston with the ring right above the top of the exhaust port. Lowering the intake port as opposed to raising the skirt increase port volume but it straightens the port to intake block transition. Don't know if cutting the skirt would be a better option. The saw no longer sounds like it is gargling.

Interesting video mate. I personally use 325 chain on all my sub 60cc saws and 3/8 on 60cc + machines. Like you said that's the way things are in Europe and seems to work out just fine.

Porting it would probably make it run worse but a carb change would make a difference I bet. Cheers

Buddy has the McCulloch version of that saw. The best part of the saw is the scrench in the handle. That's the special one that can be used to disengage the chainbreak if you manage to pry off the clutch cover with the break on. It started to run decent on the 5th tank.

Stock sprocket and same muffler mod. I put a hotter plug in and tuned the carb. Try a hotter plug, that's what woke mine up with no dampening half cut.

I’ve got it in the European version called the CS50s. What I found is that the rod that connects the carb to the trigger is influenced by the pressure applied to the handle and it affects the carb lever. Also the carb might be undersized for what it should be.

Mine ran like that. I ended up just buying a new carb, and putting a little motoseal behind the gaskets on both sides of the intake block, as it had a little air leak there. Also had to buy new fuel and oil caps as the original ones shrunk. Parts were really cheap - though I haven't looked in a long time.

It doesn't run to bad for cheap homeowner saw. But it does need some fine tuning. Once you figure out the fuel issue I think it will be great for a ground saw to run in the dirty wood you don't want to run a good saw in.

Thanks for sharing the part#👍🏻 I wrote it down when I watched your finding a .325 clutch video! Always wondered why they put a full size, full house 70dl 3/8 chain on them. I've got a couple of those pr5020's one mildly muffler modded and one stock, both run well, I want to like them but every time I get one out... meh. Figure if someone asks to borrow a saw they'll make fair loaners. Maybe not this week but will definitely have to order that sprocket and give it a try, may just change my opinion of them!

Probably not but wonder if it could compete with a 450 rancher if ported🤔

It would probably beat a stock 450 Rancher as it is with just the muffler mod and .325 sprocket. That is if I could get it to run perfect.

Even though it's not running right, there is a noticeable difference, especially after the muffler mod. That tells you how choked up it was from the factory.

Oh, and I can see the crappy super soft antivibe flexing a bunch when you are pushing on it. I think that if you push too hard it actually changes the throttle to the carb. I saw some guys just strap it so it limits movement.

Super D! You know Pull-On! ,… is a south Louisian-a’ Word meaning…. Bad-To-The-Bone or Badazz! Hell man, Ol’ Jamie was the brother who designed and built the first Centrifugal pull-starter side covers that would spin out the chip debris and blow a positive charge across your air filter assembly! Which Electrolux slapped into the “Husqvarna” branded version’s and it’s what pushed them into a different professional user’s heart’s because they were just not near as bad at loading up their air filters and you found that you had a lot more running time then you could with your Stihl’s…. The hole Poulan engine design is a pretty near direct copy of what they called the 36-42…136-142…242…. Those little boxes are all the same …. I find it comical that you can get a Poulan badged 36cc and 42? Or whatever and they are all just the same stuff with different badges because of some marketing or engine size requirements by the government??? LMFFAO!!! We definitely don’t make shit in America anymore that’s worth a shit…. But that’s lazy people who want free shit and a lazy bloated government that will let them sickle from the big Tit! LMFFAO!

There is a lot of room in that combustion chamber at Tdc. If possible, a base gasket delete and or machining to improve compression. The rod may be really weak and not able to handle all that. Port the cylinder? These saws are so castrated that you have to do a lot just to get them to breath right. That filter is seriously weak, so remove the cover and put a bigger filter on it. I don’t see why you can’t get 5hp out of 50cc other than the overall quality of components.

Okay Boedy. I know you got a taste of the dyno recently but please stop guessing at power numbers. You’re all about facts and real ass data. You’re not a dyno. Now saying that a saw feels like a certain saw is okay from Time to time but saying “went from 2.8 to 3.5….” Is silly. And lay off the Poulans brother.

While it is rather odd to claim HP gains and amounts by just running a saw? you know that this information is just his opinion so no need to stress over it? Try this the next time it bothers you: Ask your mom for a mug of hot chocolate, take a deep breath, reach under your skirt and untwist your panties, take a deep breath and just try to relax. We both know you.enjoy watching people run a chainsaw,, otherwise you wouldn't be here in the first place. Take this for what it is? entertainment.I wouldn't do half of what this man does but it doesn't matter?. His video, time, money and saw give us both something to watch and enjoy. Oh yea before I forget, claiming to be a lumber jack gives you no extra credibility on the interwebs (even on a chainsaw video) then I can get telling you I am a psychiatrist/Therapist and you need to work on a few things. The longer we chat, the more I will know about your situation and the issues you face. A few sessions and the ability to watch a video without projecting your superiority complex in the comment section will happen. Life will get better! (And your mom doesn't hate you, honest!)
