My dad cut wood with one of these. I think it's a Poulan 58?? Anyway, me and my brother pulled it out the shop the other day. My father just passed, so we're cleaning up and getting rid of "clutter". We put some fuel in it... poured a tad down the spark plug hole, and the thing fired up!! It's sat for at least 20 years!!! Brought back memories from Looooong ago!!

Don’t listen to this business of how they are good in the brush as the saw will catch on every small twig and propel itself into your face. It is an efficient design for cutting smaller logs laying horizontal that are below waste height as shown in this video. Do what these guys are doing, cut little stuff on the ground, and you will be just fine. Big longs and entire fallen trees presents all sorts of technical hazards. If you are prone to having accidents with power tools, don’t mess with these bow saws.

HighlanderNorth1 - yes poulan used to make quality products and they still do BUT for the average homeowner that doesn't give it 8hrs a day worth or work. I still have some of my grandpa's gigantic all metal poulan screaming loud chainsaws. Now a days poulan are all plastic except the motor. Work good till you drop them or need to cut some larger timber. If your cutting stuff here and there that's 12" or under it's still a good saw you can get at walmart

This type of design is effective at cutting already felled trees that are less than a foot and a half or so in diameter. Using it below waist level and leveraging the claw. People who use this to clear brush or upright trees are the ones who get into dangerous situations...the wide chain loop leaves less room to react in the case of a kickback than a traditional chain. Also since the chain is blocked on the bottom part people will tend to cut upwards toward themselves from the front of the loop and that's just asking for a kickback right towards your face. Not an ideal situation...but when used correctly on felled trees it's much more effective than a traditional.

There's two way of looking at using dangerous tools, and two ways of designing accordingly. One is you respect that the dumb tool can mame and kill and then act accordingly. The other is to assume the tool operator is dumb, and to attempt to make the tool smart and fool proof as possible. So now we have cars with lane keeping assist, and Saw Stop table saws. SawStop makes an excellent table saw, don't get me wrong. But I never hurt myself on the 1940's Delta Unisaw that that the saw stop replaced in the community wood shop, over the 20 or so years that I used it. Meanwhile, it sent others to the emergency room. So it eventually got replaced. I think people need to have more fear and respect for dangerous tools, be it a car or a saw, and not to be dependent on safety features whenever applicable.

I used an old Homelite bowsaw for limbing in tree removal when we cleared our land for a new house. They are safe with the anti kick back device on the bar. If not used properly, yes, they could be dangerous. I only used mine for limbing downed trees and it cuts the time in half if not less. I cut the trees down with a regular saw then switched to the bowsaw.
@swampseeker6975

Yes, they can be very dangerous, even when used cautiously. Got one in my knee when I was in high school. I had just swapped with my dad and had been running a bar saw, I still don't know how I managed to do that, I think I was changing positions and snagged my jeans which jerked the bow into my knee. That was looong before anybody around here even heard of chaps. About 2 hours and some stitches later I was back running it again. Ain't skeered! Lol They were way easier on the back for firewooding after the tree was on the ground but be careful in brush.

but they are fun on the farm..
if used correctly, a bow bar is safer than a straight bar HOWEVER people used them the wrong way and the bow bars are now outlawed for sale from the factory! you can still find a few here and there and the saws must be modified for the bow to fit on the saw but it can be done! kinda like the gun stuff going on now....they blamed the tool instead of the person who used it the wrong way! I was using a bow saw when i was 10 years old....i was told how to use it by my father, NEVER had a problem!!!!

That was the one i lost at an auction in my area HAHA

Tant qu'a fuckey c'est comme ça , quel beau grement
The old homelites, poland, was good saws until sears bought them. They all became crappy.
what made them dangerous was people using then in ways they were not meant to be used! a bow saw is made for cutting a fell tree up into smaller peaces...not for felling the tree ..not for limning the tree etc!!!!

ügyes megoldás
I guess the idea is so you don’t have to worry about the tip
Specifically burning up the bearings
goood job
Guy gave me an old poulan he couldnt run. I used starter fluid no problem to start then. But it was heavy.
Скажите пожалуйста шина на бензопиле самодельная или такую можно купить

Why don't they make the bow square shape so you can cut better cleaner cuts....
А если цепь порвётся, эх хлестнёт она жостко.

This unit will cut circles around ANY saw with a bar ; i just wish that somebody would learn to FINE TUNE the carburetor whoever's been messing with it. It can STILL can run better then what it is at present 👍; although it don't sound too bad now oh and sharpening, anyone with a K-50can do it in about a bit over 30 mimutes , unless you re running a chisel chain ,then you'll meed the OTHER grimder

Well, either the teeth are real sharp or the wood is rotten. Or both. Is anyone still making these? I doubt it. A regular good chainsaw is better (and simpler).

If the compression was too low, it wouldn't even try to fire regardless if there was fuel. There wasn't enough fuel and when you added fuel it would fire.

A bow saw has a lot of teeth too sharp in WoW fast cutting
