Poudre River Colorado
Lower Narrows/Steven's Section - 4' on Pineview Rock Gauge
River Description
"American Whitewater"
Lower Narrows
Just below the Highway 14 bridge is the Lower Narrows, which consists of one big burly 'classic' class V. This is a fantastic rapid with a bunch of neat moves, and eddies that all you to catch your breath at most levels, and a very aesthetic position alongside the road. A messy rock jumble at the bottom of this rapid gives you incentive to stay on line! For those who are running the Middle Narrows for the class IV experience, you can easily take-out on river left above the bridge and portage to the put-in of your liking on river right at the bottom of the Lower Narrows and continue on down to Steven's Gulch Access.
Appropriate levels for these sections vary tremendously. The entire section is commonly run at less than 1' on the Pineview gauge up to about 2'. Above 2' or 2.5', the Upper and Lower start getting burly, but the middle is excellent. Above about 3.5', the Upper and Lower are much less frequently run (they're moving into the V+ range at those levels), while the middle is pushy and burly IV+ or 'easy V' and a whole lot of fun. This short run holds a lot of great whitewater.
Steven's
This is the most challenging stretch of water below the Narrows. Most of the rapids read-and-run class IV. The first rapid of consequence is split rock (also called Triple Rock, Twin Pin, etc.), which has an aesthetic line in the middle until high water, when the hole becomes very sticky and has resulted in a number of good stories. The next significant drop is Tunnel Rapid (IV). Here the river has forceful waves and hydraulics before the current slams into a large undercut wall on the left. That rapid takes its name from the adjacent highway tunnel. Shortly downstream you will encounter an excellent squirt spot on river left; it's so good it's called the U.S.S. (Ultimate Squirt Spot).
Directly up-river from the Mishawaka Inn is its eponymous rapid, Mishawaka Falls (IV). Mishawaka Inn is an iconic riverfront music venue with seasonal outdoor amphitheater, indoor lounge, and full-service cafe. It can be overrun by hippies and/or bikers in the summer. At times it is like a Phish concert and/or Hells Angels rally.
This is an outstanding play run at about 3.25 to 4 feet on the Pineview gauge. Above 4', the current is rapid and you only get one, on-the-fly shot a river features. A strong roll is recommended at high water, when swims are surprisingly common and they are often long, bruising, and very cold.
ReactR M
Ride higher and drier in rapids, scream into eddies faster than ever, and find your line without any limitations. The ReactR is Pyranha's most innovative design yet, and opens new doors within the world of creek and river running for kayakers of all abilities.
In the design of the ReactR, Pyranha have spent significant time developing an entirely new style of hull, with a perfectly positioned pivot point and two planing surfaces, one in front and another behind, which the paddler can switch between with ease. This means the boat is stable both when landing a drop on the bow and when planing out of features on the tail. You want that skip, and Pyranha have delivered.
This isn't just a kayak - it's a statement about Pyranha's commitment to leading the charge and progressing the sport through design innovation. The ReactR’s development tore up the rulebook on creek boat design and rewrote it - embrace the new era of whitewater kayaking!

At this level which I this was 4.2 on the Pineview rock there was a pretty nasty pocket hole around that rock but I could have probably sent over it.

Colorado has A LOT of different rivers. Season doesn’t seem to be as long as the southeast and pnw from what I see but I’m wondering if they have the most rivers for boating in a single state 🤔

this is one rapid and at this level would say solid class V a swim could be very very bad and the line was not the easiest to hit
