I potty trained both of my girls before they were TWO! This used to be THE NORM, but now the norm is two working parents, and insanely well absorbent diapers. Now kids are creeping into 3+ still wearing a diaper.
You know there is no judgement here, every family has their story, and I support that. I'm just thinking about the MONEY spent on said diapers! ... but also we still use diapers at night and often disposables because I cannot for the life of me figure out how to stop these dang cloth diapers from leaking at night! So again, no judgement here.
I do think cloth diapers make it more uncomfortable to be wet in, and starting elimination communication early helped with the fear of the potty. I also know that my girls personalities are TOTALLY opposite and I'm SHOCKED how fast Esme picked it up!

My boys are 45, 43, 40. So I was potty training back in the dark ages. Cloth diapers were the only choice. The wet diaper was a huge motivator for them - and me. We did the Reader’s digest habit as soon as they could sit independently. I didn’t want the dirty diapers. They were all out of daytime diapers by 22 months. One lad by 18 months. They wore ‘training pants’… undies with a built in foam layer. There little bottoms were so amazing with undies! They were all potty trained in the warm weather so pulling down shorts was easy. Having them twiddle in a bottle or aiming at a floating bit of toilet paper, in the bowl.. boys love to aim. Probably consistency was #1 in the whole thing. Accidents happened but we didn’t revert to diapers for any reason.. it worked for me. Good luck!

There's so much pressure on parents and kids to reach developmental milestones at certain ages. All that being said, any tips and tricks that are fun and pressure-free won't hurt. Lovely tips, Shayla. You are always honest and open and it is so appreciated! My first was potty trained pretty fast but my second took foreverrrrrr. Same mom, different kid. Good luck, everyone!

I wouldn't call it pressure. Kids have to be potty trained. Do you want to put in the work before 2 or after 2. We did EC with my daughter. We was potty trained by 26 months. Less waste, less laundry, easier for our family.

Potty training takes a lot of grace and consistency. Grace in not getting frustrated or angry with your child. Consistent in what you say and do with every stage of their learning. I did EC with my first and then potty trained with GoDiaperFree at 20 months. It took him a month to get it, but it took a lot longer for him to verbalize needing to go potty. On avg, he might have 1 accident/wk after potty training, which still felt like a win for us. Only when he was sick or going through a development stage would there be more. Now we're doing EC with our 18m with the plans to start potty training around the same time as our first.

I’m so grateful for your low pressure EC videos and the advice of offering at transitions. It helped encourage me that it didn’t have to be this super stressful thing. By 6mo 99% of poop was in the potty.

Weʼre about two months into potty training with my two-year-old boy - we started right when he turned 2 with a version of the “Oh Crap” method, which involves being naked at home for the first few days (the book says completely naked, we just did a shirt and naked from the waist down). The book has some good advice and some Iʼd rather leave behind - itʼs pretty adamant that you can and should night train young kids, which I think is just false, but has good l advice about the “sweet spot” to potty train that you mentioned. Like with all parenting books you just take the stuff that works for you and leave the rest. ;) Every kid is different but I REALLY think this naked method would work for a lot of different ages and stages - it is so good at helping them connect the dots, the sensation of having to pee with pee coming out and what to do when that happens, etc. My toddler was waking up dry but still was clueless about what to do on the potty, there were lots of accidents in the first day or two but after day three or four of being naked he was successfully peeing and pooping on the potty. We did cloth diapers but no EC. The self-initiation will take a lot longer but it will come eventually - about two months in and he is just now starting to tell us when he has to poop consistently, but he doesnʼt say anything about pee until it's already happening, so we still give him regular reminders about when to go based on how long we know he can hold it. I also donʼt limit water before bed and have no plans to, I like to drink water at night and I want my kid to be hydrated too, night time potty training will come much later and Iʼm fine with that! Hope my experience can help someone, potty training is a crazy time! I love your approach to it, just understanding that accidents are inevitable, being committed, and taking away the pressure goes a long way for parents and kiddos. ❤

I disagree with night peeing and there fact that it comes later. With both my kids I never used diapers for the night - they slept naked with a pad underneath and a cloth between legs for my son at first (I have both genders and yes, it's easier with girls, because if they pee, it goes underneath mostly). Call me crazy, but I EC them at night as well. It's the easiest of all. Kids typically move before they are about to pee, and being a light sleeper I could feel them move by me. It was harder with my daughter, she moved a lot at night, my son is basically a log, and he moves only to eat or pee. My daughter learned to hold throughout the night by 9 months consistently. My son is 15 months and still occasionally pees once, around 5 a.m. I never restricted water intake, my daughter still often drinks a whole glass of water before bed. I think last time we had an accident was when she was 2 and sick (she is almost 5 now). Kids hate being wet. All people do, of course. That's why they quickly learn to communicate with a parent at night and then around 12 months is when they start sleeping longer stretches, and therefore can hold longer, often through the night.

Just potty trained my 3 year old and have to share that the Mayfair toilet seat with built in toddler seat is the best. It's easy to switch out whatever toilet seat you have and then there's no extra piece to put on and off. We just have a small stool that my toddler can move over. Also, we tried potty training before she was 3 but she was still having a lot of accidents. We waited until she was ready and something just clicked for her and now she's doing great! I heard from other parents in her daycare that all the kids figured it out at the same time so I didn't feel bad waiting.

I definitely understand the desire to want to potty train earlier or younger as diapers are expensive and gross however.. A lot of the data supports the fact that The earlier you start potty training the longer it takes.

My daughter was 2 and was potty trained in a weekend. My son's have autism and literally didn't get fully potty trained until 6. I tried it all and with them I just had to wait for them to be ready and not scared of it anymore. This timeline of stages a child has to go through has to stop because no child is the same and some take longer than others but they get there with enough guidance and help.

All the advice was to back off on potty training during big transitions like that, so i did. And i regret it so much!! My oldest 2 were trained ~18 months, and our 3rd is currently 13 months. We have done a little bit of EC around transition times. Mostly I focus on potty learning when they are little, so we taught the baby sign language for potty and everybody in the house will do the sign if he happens to walk by when they're on the toilet. In the morning when he wakes up I'll set him on a little potty and do the sign and make sounds and he just giggles and sometimes goes and other times wants to get off straight away and go play. No stress, just introducing the concept so when we decide to train it will be smooth. Another key thing is that we have a daycare that is onboard with early potty training, that is invaluable!

We took off his diaper pretty soon like two weeks after he was good with not wearing a diaper during the day.., we noticed he never had a wet diaper in the morning so we just took it off.😮

Thank you for such a detailed video; it's very interesting to learn from other moms' experiences. There's no perfect formula here; everyone decides when to start potty training and when not to. It's essential to understand something else: recognizing your child's readiness for potty training. There's one more thing: if your child experiences regression, it's necessary to take away the potty for 3 weeks so the child forgets about it, then reintroduce it and start the training process anew.

Shayla! You must be my power animal! We are on day 6 of potty training our 22 month girl. She was really fighting us when we would change her. I mean, hysterical crying. We new it was time. We did, Oh Crap Potty Training. I like how the author cares about the autonomy of the child and doesn't like to reward with candy/treats. It took a couple days but Penny self indicates pee and poo in the little potty we keep in the living room. We're still keeping her comando. Until she builds up the blader strength to hold it long enough to remove pants. Potty training has been one of the best decisions to do! I don't think it's very difficult you just need patience! It has brought me so much closer to my "big girl" and got me off of my phone!

This week alone I've done calls with moms in Belgium and Australia! My singleton who is 19 months younger than my twins was out of daytime diapers at 14 months and I'd say potty trained by 15 months(taking him self to the toilet independently or using it when offered on outings reliably) Yay potty training!!

He would play with a toy and read books and he was never afraid of the potty. He was day and night potty trained by 2nd birthday! Amazing!!! Love it. It is harder to do with more kids involved, I’m on baby number 6 and I’m busier but I will still do casual EC.

My son is almost 2, we’re about a week into potty training! We’ve always done plenty of naked time/EC at home so the idea wasn’t new when we started potty training. We got a tiny portable potty to take with us around the house or out in public and that has been super helpful (really motivating for him). We’re still struggling with accidents when wearing pants, seems to be a common problem!

It took us three “tries” for it to seem to click with my toddler (all spaced a couple of months apart). She was potty trained a few months before turning 3, which in some ways worked out because this was after the birth of our second and we didn’t have a regression some people mention when adding a sibling. The way in which it didn’t work out is she decided to night train herself and she now wakes us up almost every night to go potty while we also have a newborn 😅🙃😴

We started VERY lazy EC when my son could sit independently. We just had the potty around and had him pee after naps/car seat. No pressure but it introduced potty vocabulary and got him accustomed to the potty! At about 18 months we actually started potty training with just letting him run around naked butt/commando at home! He caught on really fast but due to us continuing to use pullups at daycare he still isnt 100% potty trained at 22 months. On the bright side I use no diapers at home except at night, and havent cleaned a poopy diaper since August.

I had trouble potty training at first bc my 2 year old gets constipated. I noticed behaviors change, tantrums or tears, not listening, running around like a wild animal or not wanting to eat when she had to poo or didnt poo everyday. So i made her poop chocolates with coconut oil and even though i was so scared of training her and having to drop what i was doing with my infant, it actually only took me a few focused days for her to get it. Bc it was all about the prep. Potty party song every time she goes. Having her sit on her potty next to me when i went at a very young age reading books together, making it fun her being a part of it. Every time i shower she sits there with her tablet and poos but she had to walk around with no clothes to feel the urge to go and then would sit there herself. I dont know if its the sound of the running water or what. Bringing a potty near the kitchen so we arent running back to the bathroom all day. Which was making it worse bc she wouldnt have to poo by the time we got back there and made her constipation worse, holding it in. Sticker charts. Prizes. Silly miss lilly show about potty training. Buying underwear and keeping the diaper over them the first day. Then no diaper except bedtime. One or two accidents and she hated feeling wet. Taking her to the potty every 2 or few hours the first day or so. Looking back, i dont know why i was so overwhelmed by it. It was so easy it just kind of happened naturally i just need to pay more attention to the time and offering it to her. She always went when she sat down.

I did Montessori potty learning with my first when he was 15 month old. We were mostly out of diapers pretty quickly. But we needed a reset because he regressed and we moved into a rental with carpet. Then he woke up one day shortly after his 2nd birthday and decided he was potty trained. And we never had a regression after that! He was naked or comado for about 4 months. When when started putting him on the potty in the morning at 15m, we learned that he was already waking up dry, so I know nothing about night training! We started EC with my 3mo when he was 4 weeks old. We hold him over the baby potty on wake up, after eating, or if I feel like he needs it. I can't figure out his signals and I would never do night, but I can't believe how well it works! He totally knows what the potty is for and will go if he needs to. Just over here, fighting the myth that boys are hard to potty train and always train late, one boy at a time.

Oh my gosh… in Australian Montessori we call is “toilet learning” and it’s a trigger for me! I managed to support my son to become full “toilet learned” just recently after he turned 3 in Feb this year. What a journey (and not a fun one) I think honestly boys are different also and a lot of parents with both boys and girls said the boys are harder. I tried at the sweet spot and it backfired on me. It took just my 3 year old son about 2 days before her turned 3 to all of a sudden was like yep I’m doing this and finally did a wee and poo in the toilet on the same day, this was after many accidents (and still an occasional one) My only advice to mums is be kind and gentle to yourself so that you can be with your child (my regret is that I wasn’t as patient and kind through the process as I should’ve/could’ve been). Good tip on the praise part… I did that totally wrong and totally said “I’m so proud of you and still do even though I know o should praise in another way but force of habit.

We introduced the potty to our son at 14 months and gave it a long couple of months until he got it, while in the process we used cloth diapers only whereas we had been doing disposables before. I think the feeling of wetness is a huge factor. I actually left the diapers away at night pretty soon after that (16ish months or so) because he was always dry in the morning and then we would go anyway. It was a gradual process of less and less diapers and more and more on the potty - during summertime, obviously. I stored the diapers away completely at 18 or 19 months and have just recently brought them back up since we're expecting our second.

I think I agree with the time table. We put my daughter on potty after meals for poop at 16 months. Then pee potty trained before she turned 2. I had to do it while working and taking care of her. It was stressful but we did it. We just took diapers away except for sleeping. She had accidents for a week then they got less and less. She just eventually learned to go to the toilet on her own when she needed to. I started with taking her regularly, but I just couldn’t do that because of working. So I just dealt with the messes as they came until she learned she didn’t want to be wet. She wore clothes while potty training. I am wondering if there was a window of time for night training because she was dry for a long time at night still wearing a diaper but then she got sick and I left her a water bottle with her. Then she woke up wet, and now whether we leave her a water bottle or not she pees in the diaper. She just turned 3.

I read the Oh Crap book and it just wasnt for me. Heard about The First Time Parents Guide to Potty Training and this one clicked with us a lot more. My daughter was showing signs of readiness for a few months but we also have a baby so we were waiting until we had the time to start. She was around 28 months when we started. We have lots of carpet so we taped down a bunch of drop cloths in the main living room to make clean up easier. We had a potty in the room with us and she was bare bottomed the first 3 days. We did pants (commando) when we went outside to play. Introduced undies and took up the plastic after about 5 days when she was staying dry all day. We are about 3 weeks in and its still all initiating from us. We have been able to do successful short outings (groceries, park, storytime) in undies. Yesterday she even used the travel seat at the library. Though this morning was the first time she initiated and then pooped on the potty! She's was so proud of herself. I got 2 toddler potties from my local buy nothing group on fb. In our main bathroom we installed a toilet seat with a built in toddler seat. And I bought a foldable seat for the diaper bag (and post its to block the automatic flushing sensor).

Loved all these tips. My LO just recently turned one, never did elimination communication or cloth diapering but I do want to work on getting her on the potty so she isn’t afraid when that time comes. Also really excited for all your other videos you mentioned are in the works. I’m pregnant with our second and want to do a baby shower and registry but don’t know how that’ll go over with people. Most of the stuff I have on there now is for my older one because I have all the “baby” things I need. Then there’s some things I didn’t think I’d want the first time that I wish I had. Would love to hear how you approach this with friends and family.

100 % agree with you that at the very least EC helps kids not become afraid of the potty. We certainly were not pros at it but we put her on in the early months and she loves sitting on the potty now at 2.5 (well we also bribe her with an Elsa dress if she poops on the potty... Prob not the best method but, you know ...)

We tried the first time when my son turned two and it didn’t stick, was too much like a game to him. Then we did the 3 day method when he turned exactly 2 and a half. We did it with just underwear on (no training underwear) and it took a week of some successes and many accidents. He totally got it within a week, he tells me when he has to go and we haven’t had an accident in over a week. We said goodbye to the diapers on day one including overnight (he sleeps on a towel and wakes up dry most days) I do limit his liquid 3 hours before bedtime. He also goes to preschool twice a week and all his peers are also potty training which I think helped a ton.

Thanks for sharing Shayla! We did oh crap method at 19 months and I will say it’s not a 3 day plan- for us it was a month. It’s broken into different blocks, and block one is naked from the waist down until you can get a pee or poop in the toilet. Block 2 is peeing and poop with pants on ( but commando). Block 3 is peeing and pooping in different situations like public restrooms. And then block 4 is peeing and pooping with underpants. For us it worked beautifully and made a lot of sense. But yes my son is 20 months and still doesn’t always tell me he needs to go I have to watch for his cues. And also I wish we worked on how to take off and put on pants because I think he’d be more independent at this point if he had the coordination to do it on his own.

My son is 1 year in a few days. We also did EC but not very consistent. But he is used to the potty. Sometimes he hates it and sometimes he goes without fighting. He started hating his diapers recently and tries taking them off so I bought some potty training underwear for 2 year olds, which fits him well as he is a big baby. I have carpets. But I find that the underwear catches it quite nicely. I have accidents all the time. I also potty at transitions because so far I don’t see any signs that would be solid enough for me to know that he has to go.

My toddler self initiated at 21 ish months. When I kept the little potty out near the living room, he was 100% self initiating and potty trained for three weeks. When we got rid of the little potty and his only option was going to the big potty, he became more potty timed than self initiating it. We still have a pee accident most days if I am not taking him every 1.5-2hours. I remind myself every accident is a learning experience 🤣

I've honestly been so discouraged with potty training because we started potty training our boy at 20 months and he was doing great for about 2 months even having days where he would tell us when he needed to for every time he went. It was amazing! Then he got constipated and started peeing all over the floor for days and refusing to use the potty. It was kinda maddening and I probably didn't handle this regression very well. I put him in diapers on day 3 because I felt like I was losing my mind. lol. I figured we would try again once we got his poops normal but that took a week and by the time we started to try again, he was just very resistant to the potty and I really didn't want to fight him on it. We've been back in diapers for 2 weeks now and I'm still sad about it. Why is potty training so difficult and confusing?? lol. I've finally gotten to a place where I've accepted it but I was thinking about trying again soon and just doing the no pants method until he gets it. I don't want to force it though and I also don't want to stress over something that ultimately every kid learns eventually but dang diapers are expensive! Any other moms experience this? Where their kid seems to be picking it up great and then hates the potty all of a sudden?

I started potty training my daughter using the Oh Crap! Potty training book method a couple weeks after she turned 2. We didn’t do naps right away (well we tried) until she was closer to 2.5. We had introduced the potty probably around 18 months for her to get used to it and she did pee on it like twice. She was potty trained pretty quickly. I’d say within a week or so. Shayla your comment about not potty training at night yet made me feel better cuz I keep wondering when I should do that and stressing out about it. I’m not getting sleep with my 6 month old so my mom says I should just night time train my oldest while I’m awake at night but I do NOT have the energy to do that. I hope I don’t regret it though 😅

We did start to hold our babys over the toilet/potty/sink with just a few weeks old. Till month six the solids 99,9% of the time wont go into the diaper. Its a little more work before hand but saves you so many stinky diapers! In the first 3 month its more a trial and error thing to read yout babys pee and poop cues as well as knowing that often they will pee/poo after breastfeeding and sleeping. After 3 month it got really easy and there where just some phases of more or less "accidents". Its second nature now and we love it.

Long response: My daughter (now 2) was mostly in cloth diapers for the first 8-ish months of her life. I honestly believe that because of that she hated the feeling of being wet. I would always communicate to her what she had done in her diaper. “Oh you pee-peed!” just to let her know what that feeling meant and know the word for it. At about 12 months I introduced the training potty to her, just because she has always been cautious of new things and I would set her on it every now and then just so she would get used to it. I didn’t really start “potty training” until about 18 months and I did the three day method where you let them run around naked. Though, we ended up letting her do that for a week or two and on top of that I took her to the potty every twenty minutes and when she did go in the potty I gave her a mini M&M. I put her in training underwear instead of pull ups after that because the pull ups felt too much like a diaper and she seems to need to feel the wetness in order to be motivated to go to the potty. I don’t take her to the potty every twenty minutes now, I’ve spaced it out to every couple hours or so. We have to use rubber pants over her underwear in the car.

I am so glad you are making a video about this! My son just turned two and 90% of the time he wakes up with a dry diaper in the morning. So I've been trying to put him on the potty in the morning, but he is so nervous there that he just can't pee. Once I put a diaper on and wait for another ten minutes or longer he will pee, but he just can't relax on the potty. I tried singing him a song. Asked him to blow out imaginary candles. It just doesn't work. 😅 So the next thing I want to try is lettting him go without anything underneath and hopefully he will understand it.

This was so helpful. I've been waiting for this video because I have a question. Have either of your girls refused to stay laying down while trying to put a diaper on after potting them? I also do cloth diapering and have found that around 11months she refused to stay laying down for us to put the diaper back on. Would love any tips. As for potty training I started EC when my daughter was 6 months old. we read the potty book almost every time shes on. She will wake me up between 3-7am to potty her and sometimes if i get up with her and sometimes I dont. She is very much like your second where if I ask her and she shakes her head no and then try to potty her she will refuse and stand up. I agree that it does make them more comfortable with the potty and not afraid of it which is cool. Oh and way less poop messes to clean up which is great.

Finished at 23 months even at night. Now 28 months few misses and only a couple mini misses at night (no wet bed, only undies or pants a bit wet. ) We highly recommend EC. We've never withheld breastmilk or water at night.

His school will start with it in September, and I think they only have normal toilets... But it might be small toddler toilets. I can't wait to be done with diapers 😂 8 years old 😭😭😂 I think it's a lot different for nighttime, because you're not actively thinking about it or 'feeling it' like you are when you're awake...

My 3yo daughter is now potty trained. But she never gave a single sign of readiness. We tried at 2yo and it was a disaster, the way we did was not right for her, she had underwear and for her it was not different from a diaper plus we missed EVERY SINGLE pee and poo. Even with a timer. When she turned 3 we let her go without clothes for about a week (just to be safe) and it worked. Good luck parents. That’s all I have to say: “Good luck”.

She still has odd weeks where she has a daily accident, but she notices and tells me about 50% of the time when she has to go, otherwise I just offer based on her timing. She also has a tell where she shudders quickly and then I know it's potty time 😂
