►►► DESCRIPTION
I was VERY impressed with this budget wheel I bought on Amazon. It's sleek design and 3 sturdy pipe legs feels very durable. I did not think the foot pedal felt as durable, but my 8 year old son (who doesn't weigh very much) prefers it to our other pedals because it is easy to adjust speeds. I also didn't find the LCD panel helpful. But this wheel DOES fit the Giffin Grip is you think you might be getting into production pottery and at around $200 it's hard to beat the price.
This budget pottery wheel has many look-alikes on Amazon. I think this is because multiple companies are buying the same product from one or a few factories. Then, they brand it with their unique trademark.
This is the second cheapest wheel I've reviewed to date and I think it is the one I would choose IF I thought I might be getting into production - making a LOT of mugs, cups and bowls and therefore having a need to center quickly with a Giffin Grip.

    Thanks for sharing your impressions! I just bought one of these on the internet, and I'm excited! I took a few pottery classes, and I've never worked with a pottery wheel before. I'm watching a lot of nice people sharing their knowledge in pottery, for free to anyone who wants to learn! Thanks again! Apparently the clay of my region is not "strong" enough to make pots out of it. How can I improve this clay with some powder or something?

  • @OutpostPottery

    @OutpostPottery

    Hey Thanks Diego. I appreciate that. Regarding making the clay stronger. I'm not sure exactly. You can always mix your own clay. There are tons of clay recipes online that you can mix together out of the raw elements. if you don't have a ceramics supply store nearby that might be your best bet. have you ever done this before? Most people use a clay mixer for this but I imagine there are other ways to do it as well. I mix my own slip from raw elements and have mixed my own clay in the past, though I buy it now from Armadillo clay in Austin Texas. -mj

    Great review - Thank you, I just want a little one to practice on between time at the local studio and have been looking at both of these models so very helpful! My biggest concern is the height - do you think you could mount either this one or the red one to a small table to increase the height ok?

  • @OutpostPottery

    @OutpostPottery

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Rebecca. That would probably work. Are you wanting to throw standing up? I know a lot of potters who put their heavy wheels atop cinder blocks. But with the small shimpo wheels and the two budget wheels I reviewed I would be mostly concerned about the weight of the potters wheel not being sufficient - not being heavy enough - to keep it in place if you were pushing on it laterally. I'm spit balling here, but I think if it were me I would drill a hole in the legs of this wheel or in the sheet metal on the orange wheel and attach it to the table with zip ties to make sure it wasn't moving. I'll be thinking about this. Let me know if you have other ideas!

    Couldn't I also use the griffin grip on the orange one if the tray was removable, I saw one like the one to your right, my left lol. I need a good,working unit as I plan to use it often. I do like the digital one only so that you don't have to keep pressing the foot thing or switch all the time. I like the clay boys but can't afford a new one.

  • @OutpostPottery

    Yes Samantha you're right. you can use the giffin grip with the ones where you can remove the splash pan. I'm not a big fan of the digital LCD display but I get your point that a hand crank/hand changing the speeds prevents accidentally changing speeds. Yeah if your'e using it a lot the giffin grip is super helpful. My trimming speed is one of teh primary factors on how fast I can produce wheel thrown stuff. It's a good investment.

    Thanks for the reviews! Could you comment on the size of the wheel head? I was wondering whether 25 cm is limiting. (I found similar machines on Amazon with 36cm wheel heads, for another about $150.)

  • @OutpostPottery

    @OutpostPottery

    3 жыл бұрын

    I would say yes it is a little limiting not having your standard wheel head and 10" center bat pins but you get used to it and for the price I think it works. This wheel probably wont be your forever wheel but it will be sufficient to get you a good emersion into throwing on the wheel. My everyday wheel has a larger wheel head - the Clay Boss i review in another video. I think this would be a great everyday wheel though. I would go for one that does not have the digital lcd though!

    As I'm thinking about it, I only travel with wheels that have smaller wheel heads. Those are the ones I'm taking around for demos and teaching. I would say that smaller wheel with a smaller wheel head is preferable for moving around.

    I am trying to imagine what it is like to center on a 6" square bat. It seems to me that my hands, which are normally in contact with the bat during centering, would be getting chopped by the edges of the bat all the time. How has this worked with you?

  • @OutpostPottery

    @OutpostPottery

    3 жыл бұрын

    I was worried about that too, GeoChaben. my first square bats were made out of wood, and i was really concerned about splinters so i spent a couple hours sanding down about 200 square bats. never got any splinters. When i moved to the ceramic tiles for bats I was worried about getting cut on the bottom of the tiles. hasnt' happened. its' been fine. it felt "different" throwing off a paddy at first, but after a few tries - 15 mins or so - it was fine. Now it's my default way of throwing if i'm not throwing off the hump. you get used to it quickly. Try it out and let me know how it goes! I'd love to hear your experience.

    hmm. I'm not sure Nessi. You guys are 220v and here in the US it's 110v. I just looked on the wheel itself and there is no switch to change voltage. I would imagine there is a version of this wheel available for 220v markets. When I lived in Malaysia, I had a 220v Aspire. then I bought the same wheel in 110v when i got here to the US. I would not recommend running the wheel through a power converter. I've done that with electronics on both sides of the ocean and it always feels a little dicey - not the best. I would just buy a version of this wheel or similar that is 220v. I hope that helps Nessi!

    I found one that looks exactly the same. It's called "Vevor 350w Pottery Wheel Machine 25cm Ceramic Art Craft Work Lcd Control Grey". So it looks the same, but I read some bad reviews about it on Amazon. That just don't seem like it's the same as yours. About a loud sound but this one doesn't seem loud at all? What I find attractive about yours is that it can have quite some resistance for a cheaper pottery wheel. Is that power in the 350W? How much W is yours, do you know? Do you think that all of those who lookalike are around the same? I'm searching for one that sends to The Netherlands :)

  • @OutpostPottery

    Hi Marimo. Great question! If it looks the same, then it probably is. HOWEVER, as with many inexpensive products coming out of these factories, you do get some lemons sometimes - some products that have defects. The reviews could be true and that person just got a lemon. If you read the comments in this thread you will find some people have had that experience as well. If you do get a defective product I would ship it back and get another or similar product. The chances of two defects in a row is not likely. Thanks for asking this. -mj

    Hey, I have a question: Why DO pottery wheels always spin counter-clockwise? BTW it's a shame that no one manufactures a well built portable potter's wheel. After all, what if it's a GORGEOUS day outside and one wants to throw pottery in a beautiful park, or something?

  • @OutpostPottery

    @OutpostPottery

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Wade. I'm not sure but I think spins counter clock wise because most people are right handed and so it's easier to pull up the wall on the right side of the pot when it's going that direction. If you do an experiment and try to pull up the wall on the left side on the wheel while rotating Counter clock wise, you're fingers will get caught and warp the shape. I don't think i'm explaining myself very well on this 🤪 but try to pull up the wall on the left side of the cylinder instead of the right while it's going counter clock wise and you 'll better understand what I'm trying to say. OR reverse the spin and try to pull up the wall like you normally would. it's rough :)

  • @OutpostPottery

    @OutpostPottery

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Tiffany. I have not purchased the "VEMAC" branded version of this wheel but I believe it is identical to the one I reviewed above. The splash pan, the wheel head, the structure the color - it's all the same with one exception. This VEMAC version appears to have a manual interface rather than an LCD interface. I believe the manual version on the VEMAC would probably be better. I don't see any value in the LCD interface and I occasionally hit a wrong button on accident with the LCD interface which changes the speed or direction. I included the VEMAC in the links I'm recommending because I believe it is the same exact wheel, likely from the same exact factory in China, but with a different company's branding.
