Potter's Work Ep. 5 -Adding gold and silver luster

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is the fifth and final episode in the series of A potter's work. We will be going through the whole process of working the red clay into our best selling Gold Dragon Mugs. In this episode, the mugs have been thrown, trimmed, and glazed and now it is time for the gold! I luster the mugs to give them the golden or lustered sheen.

How many hours should I fire it after applying the gold rust? And can I just apply one layer?

I usually wait 12 hours to 24 hours after applying. Here is one of my more recent videos in which I talk about how to do lusters and what you need to do it :) kzread.info/dash/bejne/pmp2rKORkbWxYc4.html

If you don't like the result, can you refire?

If you don’t like the results of the lusters you can refire supposedly but I have not had much luck with that method. They also have luster erasers that are said to do that, but I have never tried them personally. I usually just scrap the piece, use it myself or for social media photos.

How long will a bottle of gold Luster last you? Just curious thanks

I depends on how much I am using on a piece and how many pieces I have to luster. It does go pretty far. My mother of pearl lasts me the longest I maybe buy one or two a year. The silver and gold luster I usually have to buy an new one every other collection, so every few months. When I do my dragon stuff I usually go through and entire bottle.

Hi🌹 can I use an electric oven

Ovens don't get hot enough, even for a luster fire sorry. You need a kiln for this kind of clay. If you want to use an oven I recommend using polymer clay, available at most craft stores. Sculpey is the brand I like the most. Or if you want to get into pottery, check out around your area and see if there are any local studios offering classes :)

I didn’t think this was food safe?

Great question! I use Duncan overglazes/lusters that are food safe when fired properly. And I do make sure to use cones for temp measurements, they are usually removed and documented before the video recordings 😊 I also avoid sticking them inside the mug because coffee can be very abrasive. I do care very much about my customers getting food safe mugs❤️
