Potpourri Box - Woodturning

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Turning a box to hold potpourri or other air fresheners. I really enjoyed turning this and found another use for the laser engraver.

    Very well done Gord. Nice segmenting patterns. You are really getting with it with the laser engraver. I see several of them showing in various YT channels lately. Gets me thinking about owing one myself. Just thinking so far. Too much going on right now to get serious about it yet. But you have done some interesting stuff with yours. About the bowl. It's quite well done. Very nice piece of work. I kind of liked the base before you trued it up. The segment edges nicely contrasted the roundness of the upper rings. 👍👍Thank you for sharing. Have a great 2023 and stay safe my friend.🙂🙂

Both good sources for high quality box making tools.

    Nice job. I’m sure your wife will approve. Aren’t lasers great? The things that can be done to make things easier are endless. I recently made a special indexing wheel for a friend that fits on his lathe. A machine shop wanted to charge him $200 for something I made with 1/8” hardboard. On the vessel you made, have you considered turning the inside of the ring that is directly on top of the floating bottom? That way you wouldn’t have to worry about accidentally touching the plywood disk. Looking forward to your next video

    Greg, I sure am enjoying learning how to use this laser engraver. You are right there are so many things that can be done with it. No, I had not considered an inside ring to put above the floating disc. Thanks for the thought, I will have to check that out. Always something to think about. Thanks for watching!

    Another excellent video production, Gord! The Potpourri Box is beautiful, as well. I really like the lid you designed, it's mesmerizing! You told me once that you make your own logo coins. This was before you got the lasers. My question is, how do you make them? They look like golden plastic, is that true? Another question is, will you consider making them with your laser? Just wondering. I always thought if I had a laser that was the first thing I was going to make. Now that I have one, I never have! LOL! Best laid plans and all that. Anyway, a very enjoyable video of a unique improvement on Gayle's smelly goods! 😊 Phil

  • @GordonRock1

    @GordonRock1

    Glad you liked it, Phil. Yes, I did make my own logo coins quite a while ago. The plastic that I used is two layers. The bottom layer is black and much thicker than the top layer, which is a brass colour. I used my CNC router to make them and still have about 100 of them left so I haven’t even checked whether I can use the laser engraver to make them. The CNC router was used to do a thin carving of the top layer of plastic. I assume the laser engraver could be used to burn away that top layer of plastic if I set the speed and power correctly. What I am, not sure of, since I have not tried it, is whether the engraver would cut the coin out without just melting it into a puddle. No experience with that yet. I suppose I should try it soon to find out. I will let you know what I find out when I get around to trying it. If you try it before I do, please feel free to let me know what you find out. Thanks! Take care of yourself, buddy, …..Gord

    @@GordonRock1 I think I heard somewhere that using a laser with some plastics can give off a harmful gas. Please check that out before you go getting yourself sick, my friend. I'll be sure to let you know if and when I get to making my own with the laser.
