This brings back childhood memories of digging up the potatoes. So happy to see you teaching the kids about growing your own food. Too many kids think it comes from the store instead of a garden.

Hello Karen! Yes, our kids have a healthy knowledge of where all their food comes from and they are surprised when other kids don't know it! There is something magical about kids eating food that they helped plant and harvest, they are just more excited about it! Have a wonderful rest of your week Karen!

Hi Guys. Thanks for the nice video showing the world how well potatoes grow in Alaska. I'm a seed potato grower in the MatSu region and I also had some of my crop get caught by the freeze last month. Removing the tubers that have been damaged by the frost is actually more important than pulling out the 'nicked' ones. The sliced surface will heal over (suberize) within a few weeks but the tissue that has been frozen and then thawed will break down and start to rot in storage. My trick has been to store the tubers at room temperature (but in the dark) for two weeks to have any frost-damaged begin to break down. Then I can sort the bad ones out and bring the remaining good ones into cool storage for the winter.

Hello Becka! Glad you enjoyed it. Have a wonderful day
Isn’t it amazing how much better homegrown food tastes than store bought! We are doing all of the last minute outside chores here too. We baked squash all day today and I will bag up and freeze. I have 69 pounds of sauerkraut in crocks that we will can in about a week. Deer hunting starts next weekend here. Love watching what you cook for meals! Have you tried the crockpot liners? So nice when it’s time for cleanup. I am always looking for new recipes to try. I want to try canning some potatoes because we can’t eat them all before they start to spoil. Anyways, your videos are a bright spot in my day! Take care🙂

Just a tip. I grew up on a farm and have dug a lot of potatoes back in the day. It's a little easier if you use a pitchfork instead of a shovel because you aren't lifting as much heavy dirt, but you still find all the potatoes. Now, I am a lot older and I use grow bags for potatoes because that's almost no work at all. You might consider trying them out. I recently discovered your videos and am loving seeing what life in Alaska is like! Thank you!

Hello Sandra! Glad you enjoyed coming along. The food was YUM! Have a great day
That was sure an amazing crop of potatoes and carrots...yum! Fresh eggs are so ono (yummy)...when I can get them. We have a plethora of wild chickens and roosters here on Kauai that are not edible. Locals say to cook a wild chicken, put it in a pot with a rock and boil it for many hours then take the rock out and eat it. That's how tough the wild chickens are here. The Hawaiian word for chicken is MOA...some pretty mean moas too! I really enjoy watching you cook and bake with the boys. I may be old (70) but this auntie can still learn some new cooking techniques. FYI...Auntie and Uncle are how the younger people refer to all elders, even if you are not related. It's a sign of respect. Do Alaskans have a certain word they call elders, even if they are not related? Sending much aloha from Kauai, Hawaii.

Hello! We have visited Kauai and absolutely loved it! We were supposed to go to Kauai this November but my husbands company has a no travel policy right now so we have to wait till next year. So many wild chickens! That is soooo funny about boiling the rock, I had heard they were no good for eating. I will have to ask my husband if there is a native word for elders that I don't know. I have heard them call them "elders" Thanks for being here!

What a wonderful harvest 🥔🥕 glad you managed to get it all done in time! Every Mum here knows all about the little ones "big feelings" that is real life, you are both so patient with the boys it is a credit to you both. Weston's drawing is so good, you have very creative boys hope Weston and Bennett's book report got an A👍 When l do a pot roast l leave the potatoes and carrots whole and just throw them in, although some of those spuds needed to be chopped otherwise they wouldn't fit in, do you use shoots from other potatoes to grow new ones? The chooks are so cute and have lots to say for themselves 😊. After harvesting all day you and Mark exhausted but the boys so full of energy still, wish we could retain that youthful energy. See you on the next day Everett 😘

Weston's drawing did turn out amazing, I should show it! They both got 100% on their reports which is hard to get at their school, they worked very hard. We do often use the old potatoes with spuds in the spring to plant. We typically have a few to plant and then buy some as well. The kids always have so much energy when Mark and I can barely move anymore, oh to be young again. Glad you enjoyed Everett's little monologue, he is so funny!

Hello Cathy! We have had pretty good luck with potatoes but it always varies a bit how many we get. It is always a treasure hunt and exciting to see what is under each plant. Some of these ended up being a bit rotten when we further inspected them, they had too much water. Sorry you didn't have a great harvest. The rest of our garden was pretty dismal this year but I had very little time to put into it. Thanks for watching!
