Took my POTA travel kit out to Moraine Hills State Park to do a few things.
1. Try out my POTA Travel Kit before my upcoming trip
2. Start working towards my Kilo Award at K-1012 having just finished my last Kilo Award at K-0986
I had some issues getting the antenna to tune on 40m during my last activation so I was glad to see that it tuned up just fine this time because I will be relying on 40m during an upcoming camping trip.
Despite my camera over heating in the middle of the activation and shutting off (It was quite hot out that day) I was able to get 22 QSOs in the log on 20 and 40m SSB so another successful activation in the books.
Equipment Used in this Activation:
Radio - Yaesu FT-891 - tinyurl.com/5f8frfjw
Battery - Bioenno 12v 12ah LiFePo4 Battery - tinyurl.com/4zsk9rfm
Antenna - Buddistick Pro Deluxe - tinyurl.com/ys72swf9
Laptop - Evolve III Maestro - tinyurl.com/22m3hfty
Camera - GoPro Hero 11 Black - tinyurl.com/mpmyukjw

Looking at the 891 myself. Like the simplicity of the set-up you hv too👍 73
Thank you for your time and effort to present an outstanding demonstration. Very educational! Happy to give you a thumbs up. 👍
Great video … you mention SWR of about 1.7 to 1 not bad but almost all of the Yaesu radios start dialing back the power above 1:5 to 1 so you wont be putting out full power that’s ok when you have a 100w rig running less than 100 so won’t matter too much.. running low power though and the 1.7 will hurt the success rate. I have the same laptop I’m currently setting it up for ham radio digital modes, good to know it works fine in daylight outdoors etc… Thank again for making this outdoor video, they are so hard to make, I appreciate it!
Good to prepare before a big trip so nothing is overlooked. Nice job

@@WQ9FHamRadio Yeah me too. I think that's become my favorite pastime of videos on the channel. Making videos about how much stuff I forget 🤣
Kevin I subscribed to your channel and am currently binge watching your POTA videos. Practicing Logging your QSOs admittedly I’m rusty, however good practice 😊 Earlier this afternoon I ordered a FT-991a to my older TS-2000a. I am rebuilding my QTH & mobile Stations so plan to become active as both a Hunter and Activator. Perhaps one day I might activate the park you operated in this video. 3 weeks after the video the laptop price appears to be $130 now, they must like the link that brought in some sales, lol. I have been looking for something to log my POTA contacts, but nothing seems as smooth as my Acer Chromebook. I have just been using a simple waterproof paper log & have been transfering it to HAMRS afterwords, but my Android phone isnt so easy to do it live since I am primarily a CW man. I grew up 40 miles SW of Dubuque & got my Novice ticket 44 years ago when QRP wasnt ad cool, lol When we leave CO in late October we park at Rock Cut Park gor a couple if eeeks before heading to FL for the winter do get to do some POTA fun along the way. Cheers, Davey - KU9L

Good to know about how off the date/time was on the Evolve laptop. I have one, but don't use it that often. I'll be sure to keep an eye on it. I always update the time for FT8, but I'm not always using it for FT8.

I have only used it a few times for FT8 but I was really surprised how far off the date was after not using it for a few months. Thanks for watching. 73, Kevin

It's a hard habit to break some times lol, I got my start in radio on the CB back in the late 90s/early 2000s. For logging in the field I use FLE (Fast Log Entry) it is very basic but for logging, only putting in a call sign and signal report and Park Number if it is a P2P. 73, Kevin WQ9F
thanks, and you might have mentioned but what power output were you using?
Nice job. You should be able to get better than 1.7 to 1. My 891 starts to cut back power right after 1.5, so I don't know if yours was or not.
@WQ9FHamRadio

I could probably get better than 1.7 you're correct, but I know 1.7 is going to run fine. I didn't notice much difference in output power, but I usually keep the meter set to SWR when I am operating portable just in case. Thanks for watching, 73! -Kevin
I have the same laptop and find the keys onerous to use. I am a touch typer but these keys are quite stiff to press. Is yours the same way? Also it kept shutting down at the slightest touch. Opened it up to check connections and pushed on a couple of things. Whatever I did it seems to stay on now. Nice activation you had. 73

It is not the greatest laptop that's for sure, but for how much I paid I don't mind taking it to the field where I know it might get messed up. They keys are not great, I really have to make sure I press the key so that they actually press down it seems. Thanks for watching, 73, Kevin
Very fine ! How many whiskies did you use with the FT891 and 12 Ah batterie ? 😀 On the manual it is written 23 Ah minimum 😀
@WQ9FHamRadio

I can run 100w output on the FT891 with the 12ah battery with no problems. The 12ah is the overall capacity of the battery but it will do 20 amp continuous output with 40 amp peak output. Operating 100w on SSB you will rarely if every be putting out the full power for an extended period of time since your power will fluctuate with the modulation of your signal. When operating things like FT8 or other digital modes you will have more continuous power output needs and the bigger battery or lower power output will be needed. 73! -Kevin

Nice work! What was the POTA app?
@WQ9FHamRadio
Жыл бұрын
it isn't an app it is the webiste POTA.app it is like the POTA hunter/activator dashboard, with all the spots, planned activations, map, park list, etc. Let me know if you have any other questions. 73, Kevin
What are the handles on the radio?
Evolve-III is enough for logging, no questions here. But as long as you're using old fashioned modes. Switch to FT8 and that laptop will ruin your day. 73!

I've done some FT8 with the Evolve III and you're right it is slow, but it did work. Not my first choice for doing digi modes on the go. 73!

Why is your screen flashing like a b/w old tv screen?

The frames per second the camera captures doesn’t sync up with the refresh rate of the radio. The screen works fine it’s just video capture issues. 73!
