Posterior Tibial Artery Anatomy Animation
The posterior tibial artery is a major blood vessel in the lower leg that originates as one of the two terminal branches of the popliteal artery. Situated in the posterior compartment of the leg, it runs alongside the tibial nerve and the posterior tibial vein. Its course takes it from the popliteal fossa down to the medial malleolus of the ankle, after which it continues to the plantar aspect of the foot. Along its pathway, the artery gives off several branches, including the fibular (peroneal) artery, and numerous muscular branches that supply the calf muscles. It further bifurcates into the medial and lateral plantar arteries to supply the sole of the foot. Understanding the anatomy of the posterior tibial artery is essential for various clinical scenarios including surgeries, treatment of leg trauma, and the diagnosis of peripheral vascular diseases.
