Post your coronary angiogram | What to know.

In this video, Professor Barlis reviews the coronary angiogram procedure recovery. We have previously had a video on what a coronary angiogram is (Link below). We discuss some important considerations for patients after the procedure and in recovery and demonstrate how the tube called the sheath is introduced into the radial (wrist) artery and what needs to occur after the procedure. Patients who undergo this procedure are typically advised to rest for a period of time afterward to allow the insertion site to heal and to avoid certain activities that could increase their risk of bleeding or other complications. The video also emphasizes the importance of following any specific instructions given by the healthcare team and contacting them immediately if any concerning symptoms arise.

Hi Peter, I have been following your educative talk. I am a retired anaesthetist, underwent coronary angioplasty into LAD for 90% block 16/12 ago. Now I’m on Clopidogrel, Statin and Amlodipine 2.5mg. I studied nutrition extensively post angioplasty losing 10kgs to 57kg. Nutrition self taught, fibre, antioxidant, anti inflammatory phytonutrients, nitrate containing food and many more nutrients, moved onto heart healthy seeds, nuts, lentils, legumes, red spinach to reduce blood sugar, LDL, BP. I increased intensity of my exercise to walking, running, sprinting. Breakfast is seeds & nuts, fenugreek water with lemon juice, gooseberries. After six hours I have healthy lunch, one meal a day. I have been walking, running to complete 35km in 7hrs and 40min without cramps. I also drink Balsamic Vinegar. I do take 2gms of turmeric powder with black pepper powdered in food, Vit D3+K2 55mcg with EVOO Cold Pressed, of course 10 cloves of crushed garlic. This is my routine to say my energy at 70yrs with a stent is unbelievable. Never been so fit in all my life. I have learnt to match medical prescription to reduce the behemoth of health without fear but with nutrition. All my blood chemistry is normal. I wish I had knowledge of nutrition before never taught in medical school. I am astonished to say our allopathic colleagues lack of knowledge on heart healthy nutrition matches the general public including cardiologists. Preventive medicine is not heard which starts in the kitchen and then exercise complemented by weight. You are doing a wonderful job educating people. Best wishes, Bas

I would look again at cholesterol. There are many studies that show your HDL and triglycerides are a much better indicator of heart health; not ldl and statins do very little to actually help, but have lots of side effects. I would watch some of Dr. Ekbergs’s or Gary Tau s videos for more on this subject. In health!

After the angiogram I was informed that I had fairly poor 80 and 90 percent blockage in my heart arteries. I had scheduled a triple heart bypass surgery. I left the hospital in 5 days. I am now doing many weeks later physical cardiac therapy twice a week. I never had a heart attack and didn’t know how bad off I was. I am glad I did the bypass and am growing stronger every day. Good luck and you can prolong your life expectancy.

I had two procedures inserting stents. First was the heart attack in the LAD or "widow maker" artery where the blockage was requiring two stents. Couple days I was having bad chest pains and feeling as if I was getting a bad flu, no energy, achy, nausea. Third day I started vomiting for couple hours I couldn't stop. Thought I was poisoned so I knew something was wrong. I called ambulance finding out it was the heart attack. Recovery was couple weeks I just took it easy. Procedure was through the groin not wrist. Now 4 months after I started experiencing fatigue, dizziness and shortness of breath. I did have a follow up 2 months after her attack and was told I did have more blockage in another artery but was only 50 percent blocked. So I kinda knew these new symptoms were gonna be another stent. So I went to have an angioplasty the balloon thing done to find out about more blockage. Two more stents needed on this trip. I experienced some discomfort during this procedure, it actually hurt and I felt nauseous in the middle of the surgery. So now 3 days later I feel great. Through the femoral artery again so the leg is sore. But I should be back in action next week. Now I have 4 stents in there 😮. Maybe that'll hold me off for a while!

we do sometimes use the left side but generally the catheters travel down to the arteries in a more straightforward approach from the right side. This seems an uncommon but important complication whereby there may have been a bleed or bruise that placed pressure within the confined space of our forearm. Thanks for sharing your feedback!

My radial wrist developed a low grade bruise that hasn’t much healed in ten days. I figure there’s a lot more going on inside that I can’t see. Zero pain. I don’t drive right now abuse of a back injury and the medication I’ve been on. That tourniquet thing was fascinating…I’m used to seeing the twig and handkerchief type. This thing was bloody tight. That hurt. I had to wait an hour before anyone would release any pressure. Over the next hour they released the tourniquet a bit at a time. Then I had to wait another hour before I got to go home. They gave me lidocaine to numb everything and something that sent a heat wave down to my fingertips…felt like my hand was being jammed into an oven. But it passed in about 5 seconds….

I haven't had this procedure. I was in hospital this week for chest pain from two blocked grafts from a bypass in 2007, they went in through the groin because it was a tricky and complicated procedure. I did have chest pain afterwards because they did alot of stretching of the grafts but it was gone by the next day, they put stiches in my leg at the artery which caused unbearable pain while it was being done and is still sore four days after and black from bruising. The whole thing was not pleasant and was not pain free, I suffered more pain from this procedure than I did from the pain caused by the two blockages. I feel like a different person after this but not in a sense of better, I've withdrawn from life and people. it was not a very good experience and it was done in one of Sydney's top hospitals.

Dr, I think I messed my arm up I just had an angiogram on June 29, 2023 and two days later I was helping my husband with the groceries and I accidentally picked up a heavy bag of food. A few hours later it started hurting really bad I go back for a follow up on July 6, 2023 that’s in two days everything you said about the bruising the pain the swelling all that’s there. It hurts really bad and I still have 48 hours before I see a doctor. Any advice that I can do at home? Thank you so much for the video.

@@vrajeshkumar thank you I followed your advice and they gave me an ultrasound of my arm. I created a hematoma when I picked up the heavy bag. I’m better now and the pain is not so bad. The doctor instructed to keep an ace bandage on it off and on for 2 weeks. Thank you again for the response !! God bless !!

Great question, I will discuss this in an upcoming video, essentially non-invasive stress tests can be useful like stress echocardiogram and myocardial perfusion scans (nuclear medicine scans).

Hello Doctor I often have slight numbness or you may call as weakness in my arms and calf muscles. After I wake up, usually my shoulders and neck is sore. After excercise, I feel better. My recent ecg and echo reports are normal. I don't feel breathless. Do you think its a heart condition and do you think that I should visit a cardiologist? I have turned 40 in March. Please advise.

Thank you for your comment, in the period after an angiogram, we do often use medicines called nitrates and these can cause temporary headache. This can also occur if your doctor has started any new medication, particularly for blood pressure but irrespective always discuss any symptoms that worry you with your doctor.
