    For anyone else it would be common sense to know that over 700 workers wouldn’t be stealing. BUT for a minister surrounded by corruption it would seem perfectly plausible.

    It is indeed strange that there wasn’t some kind of an audit done to find out exactly when and how the money had gone missing. Considering the number of cases, numbering more than 700, it should have raised an alarm that something was not right some where. Coupled with the fact that complaints had been made about the system, an investigation should have been conducted right away but the people in charge failed to act. Other than just saying money had gone missing, the prosecution could not prove how the money was stolen by those falsely accused. Based on this factor alone, the judge should have thrown out or dismissed all the cases. Critical thinking was missing here on the part of those responsible for this injustice.

    To have so many post offices showing a shortfall, anyone with half a brain would see a picture developing that there was something wrong. Life changing employment choices SHOULD be made for investigators and all senior staff who KNEW what was happening. Disgusting

  • @fotofigures

    @fotofigures

    Of course, they realised. They instigated the whole affair. It was money for nothing for the post office. Investigators who succeeded in getting the Subpostpersons to hand over their shortfall by borrowing, selling their houses received huge cash bonuses.

    I have always thought that people who look at an obvious situation and try to give a different interpretation - are either paid to do so - or - they themself are criminally bent - Nothing went wrong - this was a crime against the sub postmasters - plain and simple - and the perpetrators should go to jail and pay substantial damage

    sadly this case is showing on a mass scale what they are also doing to some individuals who are currently in prison yet innocent...For example Asta Juskauskiene was given 24 years which she has served 5 of and yet is innocent...She was in bed sleeping at the time of the murder which was not disputed by the police...there is not one piece of evidence which exists against her yet she was found guilty by a jury...largely due to the CPS the police and a poor defence team along with the fact the prosecution used evidence against her which was untrue and would never pass any evidence test. Sadly this is the standard of some cases in the UK...in my opinion a very unsafe justice system.

    Royal Mail has this cynical culture where any employee is guilty until proven innocent and all the managers are people that are in positions way above their station so are often insecure people. Add to that terrible IT systems that they always get implemented with minimal cost and therefore terrible quality it is a cocktail for disaster. I am very familiar with the Horizon system letting down Postmasters and customers for decades in my experience but it's no surprise that Royal Mail bosses bullied the post masters as they are in denial of their own short comings and always look for other employees in a lower position to blame knowing in their perception that they are not a threat.

    Sir Keir Starmer needs to explain why he did not intervene in the Horizon Post Office scandal when director of public prosecutions. Sir Keir, held the position between 2008 and 2013 before moving into politics. His time in the role overlapped part of the period in which Post Office branch managers were convicted because of the Horizon computer system showing that money was missing.

    @@martinyates353 You are wrong I’m afraid. 27 prosecutions were made by DPP themselves and the remaining 709 were private prosecutions of which under section 6.2 of the Prosecution Act of 1985, Sir Keir Starmer had the power to take over those private prosecutions. It is unbelievable that Keir didn’t know what was happening. There were not one or two cases but 736 cases!! 736 people were wrongly convicted and four people are known to have taken their own lives. So the question is what was Keir doing 736 times?? There are questions for him to answer!! Why won’t he answer them??

    @@martinyates353 no worries. The whole affair isn’t being reported correctly. This actually started around 2000. So there has been plenty of time to resolve this. It is a shame that a television show was needed before anyone did anything. But the same could be said for the Piper Alpha disaster, Grenfell disaster, Hillsborough disaster and the war in both Iraq and Afghanistan. No one has been arrested, no one held to account for any of these crimes. Unfortunately our country is corrupt and an embarrassment

    People will always abuse a system... when they feel they can getaway with it. The sub-Post Office company structure... of allowing independent business owners access, to every aspect of the customer 'transaction' was always going to be plagued with people skimming money off it. The Post Office allowed this... but then it got out of hand. It became ubiquitous, even considered normal. A deterrent had to be implemented. It backfired. It's really quite tough to defeat human nature.
