Post-MCDA Analysis of Drug-related Harms By Prof David Nutt

David Nutt is currently the Edmond J. Safra Professor of Neuropsychopharmacology and director of the Neuropsychopharmacology Unit in the Division of Brain Sciences. In addition to several prestigious appointments in the past, David is currently Chair of DrugScience (formally the Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs (ISCD) and President of the European Brain Council. He has edited the Journal of Psychopharmacology for over two decades and acts as the psychiatry drugs advisor to the British National Formulary. David  broadcasts widely to the general public both on radio and television including BBC science and public affairs programmes on therapeutic as well as illicit drugs, their harms, and their classification.  He has published over 400 original research papers, a similar number of reviews and book chapters, eight government reports on drugs, and 27 books.
Take-Home Points:
• As all variables (i.e. 16 parameters of drug harms) are on a ratio scale and not absolute numbers, this allows comparison between all drugs being scored.
• Weighting is group-specific, probably culturally specific, and likely related to your chosen professional groups.
• A repeated study by European scientists revealed results supporting the use of MCDA analysis as an extremely robust process.

    - did prohibition of alcohol ever work ? unfortunately making drugs illegal does not stop people using them and actually makes them more dangerous

Alcohol kills 3 million people every year world wide. That's a good argument to call it a crime against humanity.

Can someone explain to me how chronic use of cannabis can be more harmful then chronic use of ecstasy, mephedrone, methadone and benzos?

@@PsychiatrySimplified I understand the potential harms of cannabis, but i can not understand how can chronic use of cannabis be more harmful then MDMA, mephedrone, benzos, ketamine, methadone. At 4:55, he also says that right diagram shows likelihood of dying from a chronic drug use. And cannabis still stays as more dangerous then all of the ones i mentioned. How can chronic cannabis use kill more then benzos, mdma, mephedrone, ketamine?

jjfghj pnwf cannabis is used by a greater number of individuals so in calculating societal harm - population using multiplied by the harm gives total harm. So although opioids may be more harmful on one to one basis when taking into account the population prevalence - that's where the difference may arise.

@@PsychiatrySimplified I understand, but i think dr. David Nutt mispronounced a bit. He should've said that total harm of cannabis is bigger because more people use it. Instead of that, he basically said you're more likely to die from chronic use of cannabis then from chronic use of other drugs like opioids, which i find to be incorrect. Also, isn't there a scale where social damage is shown, just like individual damage or harms to user? Alcohol and cannabis do more social harm then opioids, mdma, mvdp, bcs they're most used drugs. More people use it, and by that definition, more people get hurt, so social harm is bigger. But again, on ''harm to user'' diagram, cannabis still stays as more dangerous then ketamine, mvdp, mdma and opioids. I taught population using multipied by the harm gives us only social harm diagram, not individual harm or user harm diagram. Ty for your response.

@@jjfghjpnwf5119 Professor Nutt I don't think is saying that chronic cannabis use is more harmful, as in those who smoke cannabis every day will be harmed more than those who consume ecstasy daily, I think what he is saying is that ecstasy causes less harm to the user and others. Ecstasy is a less addictive substance than cannabis and as such those who use MDMA or ecstasy throughout their life will consume less leading to less overall harm than those who use cannabis as people typically use cannabis more. LSD would likely score a lot higher also if it were more addictive but it is used very infrequently by most people because it's addiction index is so low. I know what you are saying and I would agree that if people used ecstasy as much as they do cannabis than ecstasy would probably be considered more harmful, but given that is not generally seen in society cannabis rates higher. This data has to be taken with a pinch of salt as much as I agree with Professor Nutt's research, all drugs are different and effect the body differently and can be harmful in different ways/consumed more or less regularly than other drugs. Also if alcohol was a schedule 1 drug in the same class as crack and heroin it would probably not cause as much harm to society as it would likely be less available. I think it's alcohols availability is a huge factor which causes great harm to society. Also, Meth isn't as big in the UK as it is in America and Australia for instance so where you draw the sample is important although he did get expert opinions from other countries and they reached a similar consensus.
