When you make a playlist, there's always one question that comes to mind: How do I convey a feeling? To answer that question, you must answer this one: What feeling am I trying to convey? In this case, it's the feeling of a dystopia, the remains of a world once flourishing with life, hope, happiness and faith. What you are left with in this case is what feeling you must convey. When you as the reader of this comment and listener of this mix are listening to these sounds and melodies, what do you feel? Think about this long and hard; think about what you feel and break that feeling down. At first you might say sadness and loss, but if you dig deeper, you realize why it makes you sad. It makes you sad because it reminds you of things you once had but no longer carry with you. It's a heavy feeling of nostalgia. The more you think about this, the more likely you are to realize that if you were one of the few survivors of a world plagued with death, disease and radiation, the single thing you would miss most is your normal daily routine you are bored of now. The things you would want back the most are the things you hate the most now, and that's weird until I tell you this: The human brain loves order, routine and repetitiveness. Why? Because your brain knows what to expect, it knows its safe, and one of the worst feelings one can have is fear. Its a survival instinct at its core, and this playlist taps into that. It invokes feelings of loss, which at a fundamental level are actually feelings of fear and anxiety due to a simple survival instinct. Though it taps more into the desire to want what one no longer has than it does fear and anxiety. Those are still the fundamental feelings you're feeling now, but they mix in such a way that it actually invokes nostalgia. Another question you may ask is "Why can some random person on the internet have a reasonably accurate idea of how I'm feeling due to this music right now?" and my response is this: Music is an art, and art is a method of communication that is used to display emotion from one person to another; its a language. We all can understand it, though we may interpret it slightly differently than another person just like we interpret words slightly differently compared to others. The amazing thing about this is that it doesn't matter who you are or where you come from, anyone listening to this will feel the same fundamental feelings, meaning that music is at its core a universal language we can understand just as clearly as any other language if we give ourselves the time to interpret it.
