Portulaca - growing// how to//planting//seeding//roots//watering//succulents

Ever wondered whether portulaca is the right plant for you? Portulaca grandiflora is a very drought tolerant, sun loving plant. It's perfect for containers, borders, and south facing balconies. It does not shy away from mid-Summer scorching hot days - quite the opposite! It BASKS in the glory of dry heat.
If you are in search of portulaca seeds, let me know. I may be able to send you some depending on where you are located!

the best thing about a portulaca is that the flowers live only one day, and new flowers appear on the next day - endless source of food for insects, they love it!

I am misting mine. But mine did not sprout yet. I guess I was a bit late. Should be fine though. I just put the seeds on top of the soil. Do you just leave it be, or do you remove some of the sprouts so that it is not too crowder? (thin the sprouts out I believe is the term) I'm subscribing :)

@@ThePhobosAnomally they can take weeks to germinate so don’t give up! Yes I scattered mine on the surface. Many people thin them , I usually don’t . You might get flowers sooner if you thin them . If they’re crowded they have to work harder to grow and they compete. I dreamed mine germinated last night! Hahahahaah ! But they haven’t .

I moved to a new place. I have a half circle, of weeds/grass. About 30 long x 25 feet wide. Approx! This ground is in front of my house by the road. And i mostly a very steep hill! Yet, i must keep it mowed. Because its in the front of the house. This year i went looking for something to plant there. A low growing flower or ground cover. I picked up a couple packs of "moss rose". I planted a couple flats of these tiny tiny seeds! I am SHOCKED how many seedlings i have. So i thought i should learn something about them. Lol i am so excited to see this lovely slope, covered in these gorgeous flowers with beautiful suckulent leaves! Only thing that would make them better is if they were perenial. Lol Do they reseed on their own at all? Thank you for the video!

I remember my tutor had these growing in her garden, she would let me pick some after I finished my homework, I put them in my garden one day and the seeds latched on right away, they bloomed and disappeared over 4 years, I think they must have been self seeding/planting.

Hi there! Personally I would not recommend planting portulaca in a shady area. They are fulllllll sun lovers. If you did try, they probably would be quite leggy and there wouldn’t be many flowers if any at all. Would you like some recommendations for shady areas? If so, What zone are you in and what direction is your planting area facing?

Hi Olga, I just used a potting mix , the brand is Promix. As long as it is really well draining and not holding water near the roots, it should be ok! Pro mix is peat moss based, and they also have a specialized patented mycorrizae ingredient they don’t reveal the ratio of. In Canada, pro mix also includes coir a.k.a coconut fibre. There is even a time released fertilizer included in the potting mix too. Like I said though, any potting mix will work for portulaca ! Hope that is helpful!
