PWD's really are the best dogs. My portie is so good with my son who has ADHD & he's a great emotional support animal for myself & my husband. He's a friend & part of the family. ❤ Super smart dogs too. He had 5 Commands down & rang a bell to go outside by 3 months old. Never wanders off because he always wants to be with us, follows me everywhere, etc. Very active and love the water just like our family. They are the best breed. ❤

They are definitely challenging as puppies...but very smart, and totally adorable. The smartness continues, the challenge diminishes, the cuteness intensified, and they became the most loving, wonderful dog you could ever own. I lost my sweet girl in November 2021. When I began to think about getting a puppy, there was no doubt as to the breed...I had to get another one. My puppy is 5 months old. She's adorable, challenging & smart as can be. She vacillated between being a little monster, to becoming a little snuggle bunny, angelic, love nugget. Looking forward to the warmer weather where I can train her for some off-leash hiking.

Have you had dogs before or are you an experienced owner? I’m seriously considering getting one but I’ve never had dogs before and though I’m more than willing to commit to obedience training I live in an apartment so I’m not 100% sure on getting it.

My pwd is 12 years old she's still full of so much life people are always so surprised when I tell them her age. I give her glucosamine chewable tablets everyday plus daily swimming and she still is as active as when she was 8.

Informative video. More than once I've gotten this breed mixed up with Whoodles - the combination of a Wheaton Terrier and a Poodle. I would like to own an active athletic dog someday but I can't at this time because I have to be at work for too long and couldn't give a Portuguese Water Dog the attention and exercise he or she needs.

This was super informative and helpful! I am looking at getting a Portuguese water dog for my next service dog in 2-4 years, so I am doing lots of research now. So this video was a great resource

My service dog is a Portie. The program he's from prefers them over Poodles as a non shedding breed (they primarily work with Labrador and Golden Retrievers like most do). Absolutely amazing dog! I didn't know the breed before and could have never dreamed of a dog like this but I love him in every aspect. Even his quirks are so loveable and the way he disobeys is as well 😅 He's the funniest and most loving companion I can imagine and does so well as a service dog. He's on the less sensitive side of his breed but still a sensitive dog who needs some management and help in situations that are scary to him. No problem at all for me, his sensitivity is greatly appreciated in other parts of his job, but some people might be better off with a stoic dog like a Golden or Lab.

Pretty much everything said here applies to all dogs. Exercise and mental stimulation is key to all breeds.

You have never owned a PWD then. They are full of nervous and intense energy, and despite how much mental and physical exercise you give them, some of them can be like this for many many years. IMO they are a working dog, and don’t belong in most households. This will tick off some owners but it’s true for most PWDs.

Can't watch. Text all over the video. Do you not know captions are an option if necessary. Annoying.
