Portuguese Goa as it was in 1953

This is the truth that the "pacifist" Nehru refused to face and destroyed in 1961.

im a goan catholic. we are extremely devout catholics but equally patriotic Indians. Many of us hold high positions in the indian armed forces and many have laid down their lives for our motherland INDIA. Our Roman Catholicism doesn't make us any less Indian. To all the Portuguese and others feeling offended, I respect all of you. I don't know the situation in the 1950s but today Goans have moved on. We are Indian n proud. You had your glory days. now you too, kindly move on

my ancestors may or may not have been converted during that period. whatever the case,my faith is the only thing that gives me 100% inner peace and satisfaction. also, what the Portuguese did was in complete contradiction with what my saviour jesus preached... to love your enemy, to pray for those that persecute you, forgiveness etc. most Christians in fact don't even have any regard for them as what many of them did went against everything that Christianity stands for. a blot on Christianity indeed. but most of us today have a very real and personal connection with jesus... n again, whatever the case, we are equally proud of our faith and our motherland... my being catholic in no way diminishes my indianness. it only strengthens it

summer solstice You don't get the point... your ancestors being converted or not is not the point here neither is you being a devout catholic. All I ask you to do is take a look at history and check the atrocities committed by the roman catholic church worldwide, and particularly in Goa which suffered the worst... check out the methods employed by the so called defenders of the faith... A person who refuses to see the truth is not worth my time... ... and all Christians are not Catholics, there are other denominations... just so you know...

yes... I agree India is very very diverse... sometimes the extent of its diversity is beyond the grasp of even the normal indian person. India never ceases to amaze... fact is.. the word indian cannot be defined satisfactorily with respect to religion, race, language, dress, food etc... the easiest answer as someone rightly said is that anyone who calls himself/ herself an indian is an indian !

That is a long time for Portugal not to have any influence in Goa. Portuguese rule in Goa endured for four and a half centuries. Goa was eventually granted the same civic privileges as Lisbon. Its senate or municipal chamber maintained direct communications with the King and paid a special representative to attend to its interests at court. In 1563 the governor proposed to make Goa the seat of a parliament representing all parts of the Portuguese east, but this was rejected by the King. The Portuguese rulers in Goa were either Viceroys or Govenors. Their original jurisdiction included the possessions of the Portuguese from Africa to Southeast Asia. The first viceroy to serve located himself in Kochi to the south on the Malabar coast; in 1510 this Portuguese seat of government was then established at Velha Goa. The Portuguese base at Goa worked to consolidate their control of the lucrative spice trade. Goods from all parts of the East were displayed in its bazaar, and separate streets were designated for the sale of different classes of goods: Bahrain pearls and coral, Chinese porcelain and silk, Portuguese velvet and piece-goods, and drugs and spices from the Malay Archipelago. In the 16th century Portuguese control of the waters off South Asia enabled them to tax the cargoes of its sea trade.

I would love to know my family history before the portuguese rule, all my grandparents were born in goa but all 4 of them left when quite young after they married to live in Africa, Kenya. From there a lot of my family members made passports to come to the Uk as Kenya was under british rule and others for portugal as we were goan. My grandparents didn't think it goa was a place to make any money and moved so they could follow work. Being a fishmonger was frowned upon but that seemed to be the only work available in goa..i wish I asked them more questions before they passed away. Our generation, we didn't marry goans, so my daughter is very mixed, she hasn't really grown up with the goan culture I did but she does know some konkani as I teach her. I do wonder what the goan culture is like in goa itself..a different world i guess. Is it easy to track your ancestor's and create a family tree there? That's something I would really like to do. Our family names are Fernandes, Rodrigues, Colaco, Braganza.

***** Ridiculous nonsense! The Portuguese actualy created a dictionnary Konkani-Portuguese and vice-versa! And You should read all the reports written about Goa and it's inhabitants, reports who date back to the 16th century! Tomé Pires (ca. 1465 - ca. 1540) wrote the most marvellous descrptions about Goa and her people(s), only for starters! And after him so many others... The medical-surgical high school was created in 1842, a school who had equivalences to the best European and Eastern Universities! In 1900 a newspaper was founded, who was written in both Portuguese and Gujarati! You simply don't know what You are talking, i.e. writing about! Persecution of Indian Languages in Goa???? ***** Of course You couldn't find "even a single trace of Portuguese influence on the Hindus and Muslims of the region" First, the smashing majority of all of them came to the territories AFTER the Indian Union's invasion! And before that, Hindus and Moslems locked, not to say, entrenched themselves! It's more than evident You're stubbornly insisting on what better suits Your preconceived opinion! Fair enough! Yet, had You kept Your eyes wide opened, You would at least have seen all the strong influence, starting with all those monuments left behind by the Portuguese! After the Indian Union's invasion the policy of New Delhi was to settle lots of Hindus in the territories! Nevertheless, the Portuguese didn't only "influence" Goa, Damão and Diu, they really made those places something totally new. And when some years ago the portuguese navy training ship "Sagres" passed Goa and the Indian Authorities denied the ship anchoring in the port of Goa (veeery strange, isn't it???), forcing the ship to stay in international waters, it were the Goans themselves, most of them of humble origin, who jumped into their boats and went to the "Sagres" training ship to greet the crew, with cheering, flowers, little presents, and banners with inscriptions like "this is Portuguese India", and "this is indian Portugal" and so on, and so forth! I understand You may either not know any of that, or dislike it. And if You do know all of that, but insist in denying, only because You don't want things to be like this or that, it doesn't mean that they don't exist! They are all true and REAL!

Goa came under the governance of the Delhi Sultanate. But, the kingdom's grip on the region was weak, and by 1370 they were forced to surrender it to Harihara I who held on to the territory until 1469, it was appropriated by thesultans of Gulbarga. Then the area fell to the hands of the Adil Shahis of Bijapur, who established as their auxiliary capital the city known under the Portuguese as Velha Goa.

Can you back up your claims with some data and provide me some links? In 1930, as estimated by British, there were around 7.5 lakhs Goans. 4 lakhs were in Goa, 3.5 lakhs in British Indian cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and karachi. Rest 50k were scattered all over the globe...no other community except Jews are this scattered for livelihood. The only difference is - Jews didn't have their homeland at that time unlike Goans! Why? Because there were no jobs in Goa. Portuguese had made on capital investment in Goa. There were few schools of primary education in Portuguese medium. Rest were mainly konkani language schools for secondary education started by Goan themselves. The Portuguese government never established any general degree college in Goa even after 450+ years of rule. There was one medical College and one priest training seminary (rachol). Why are you proud of being a slave? 😂😂😂 Interesting seriously. I have never seen this before. 14 colonies of USA were in British control and they still fought for their independence !! Most of them were British themselves. Australia and Canada are contemplating removing British monarchy as head of states. Despite the fact that those countries were majorly populated by Brits themselves...and here you are, an ethnic konkani person whose ancestors were forcefully converted at gunpoint, whining for the country which is so far away from, which is not part of your DNA, Which subjugated your people from centuries 😂😂😂😂 Viva Portugal 😂😂 Lolz

There are many things in the video narration that are BS when subject to scrutiny:1. The narrator claims that exporting Manganese ore is profitable. That is the stupidest thing to do and is the recipe to remain underdeveloped. At least they should have developed competency in refining pure Manganese or to Ferro-Manganese.2. . The narrator claims that importing without customs duty results in heavy volume of business which furnishes Goa with a comfortable revenue. (4:14). I don't see how spending money to buy foreign goods increases Goa's revenue unless they sell in black market (refered to as 'devious route' to India)3. The narrator pulled this from his netherlands: "Most Goan families are content to remain Portuguese citizens". He didn't cite any source. He followed this with a bunch of derisive remarks on India's poverty. 4. "Goa has strong religious ties to Portugal". I don't think even the converted Christians would claim to have 'strong' religious ties to Portugal. Religion is simply religion.5. The interviewer is already claiming that the feeling of colonialism is absent. What he means is that people weren't already violently revolting. Then the narrator explains that Portugal treats Goa like a province, its own unlike Britain which treated India like a leased property. Since the Portuguese are benevolent in promoting native Goans to high offices in their government in Goa, the locals should be grateful to them. The narrator sounds like an American presstitute who is rented for furthering Portuguese propaganda on Goa.

Today unfortunately I see a lot of catholics in Goa saying that it was better off under the Portuguese.. these people were born in the 80s and 90s and never lived under the Portuguese rule and have been radicalized by the political priests in their sunday churches. They think "We are Catholic and so were the portuguese, so our loyalty should lie with them and not India". These are ignorant and misinformed people who are not aware that ethnic Goan christians also wanted the Portuguese to leave and wanted to join India. There were many Goan Catholic freedom fighters. Tristão de Bragança Cunha was one of them. Why were they against Portugal and for India in spite of being Catholics? The reason is, along with being religious bigots, the Portuguese were also racists. The Goan catholics were never treated as equals to the Europeans. They were denied high posts in the church because of their dark skinned. In fact the Pinto revolt of the 1700s happened because of this. Goan christian priests were denied the post of archbishop and it went to a European instead. Hence they revolted. If you were under the Portuguese regime, you would be treated as inferior because of your ethnicity.

How do you draw the line.? And FYI. Even Jesus was not born Christian. So there's nothing wrong with changing your faith. Ppl change. And let them.

It is wrong to say that Nehru was in the know of Operation Vijay in Goa in December of 1961. Nehru had given a word to UN and Western Powers that no military force will be used in Goa to avoid avoid blood-shad as Portuguese Dictator Antonio Oliveira Salazar was ready to convert Goa to Stone-Age if India used Military Force. Salazar who was member of NATO tried to hand over the Portuguese overseas territory to hand over to US to have NATO bases in Goa, Daman & Diu. As India moved it's Militry in the Indian territory of Goa. Even the Tank Unit from Punjab was moved to Belgaum. To this Salazar requested NATO force to move its fleet to Goan waters. America moved it's 7th Fleet from Rock of Gibralter. USSR who were averse to NATO to be in Indian Ocean. The KGB who had infiltrated the Indian IB & MI alerted the Defence Minister Krishna Menon. Nehru who was against Military Action was not informed. On 17th December, 1961 Menon approached the Supreme Commandant of Defence forces, the President of India and placed all Intelligence Reports before him and asked to issue Orders to Defence Forces to move in. Air strikes began at 5.30 am when Powerful Radio Transmiter of Emisora de Goa was bombed and two bridges of Banastari and Ponda. Then by 12 noon War Ship Afonso de Albuquerque was bombed. At 8 am of 18th December, Nehru as usual was was hosting Morning Breakfast to Western Ambassadors at PM house Teen Murti. Krishna Menon who was staying just accross the street at 1-Kushak Road had walked in uninvited. The US Ambasador turned to Nehru and said," but Prime Minister you assured the UN and Security Council that you will never use force in Goa, and Nehru replied, no we will never use force. Ambasador said that your Forces have entered Goa". Nehru turned and looked at Menon in anger. Menon who was equally taller then Nehru told him the President who is the Supreme Commandant has issued the Orders last night and he was not disturbed as he was in sleep. Haa, Haa, Haa.

Goa is the most developed part of India, a large part thanks to the Portuguese. This statement just doesn't hold any truth. Using economics to argue against imperialism is a slippery slope, and oftentimes can be used to justify imperialism just as much as it can be used to denounce it. Goa is a prime example of this. Goa is in fact one of the richest provinces in all of India, and that's mainly due to Portuguese presence in there. Another example: was colonialism justified in Algeria by the French? Economic investment was large-scale, and the economy in many ways advanced in a way it wouldn't if France was not present. Of course the answer is that it was not justified, but the reasons for which is that the French had bereaved the population of Algeria of self rule. The fact that neither the Portuguese nor the Indians wanted to grant Goa the question of self rule is the real crime.

Talking about conversions, various practices were banned in goa like Sati in the 16th century by Afonso de Albuquerque. Even hindus mourned at his funeral. And you are wrong about the portuguese, portuguese never saw goa as a colony but as their own territory.
