Portsmouth New Hampshire Tour 4K

This is a virtual tour from around Portsmouth New Hampshire. I walk around the Market Square, then the old Harbour and finish at Strawberry Banke. This video of Portsmouth NH is filmed in early fall 2019. The food in Portsmouth is amazing and so is the bar scene there are many things to do in Portsmouth like touring museums as well as going to some of the near by Islands like New Castle.

I'm from Portsmouth in (Old) Hampshire in (Old) England and I'm fascinated by this connection. We also call it Pompey and we also have a very long maritime history (the Romans called it Portus Magnus), and we also pronounce it closer to "Portsmith" (I would say Portsmuth). Clearly I will have to visit!

Also, that big brick building on your left before you go over the Memorial Bridge used to be a coal fired power plant. Ships would tie up and unload coal via a conveyer to the top of the building. From there, laborers would spend their days shoveling the coal down the chutes to the boilers where steam was produced to turn the generators. It was my dad’s first job when he was 14.

Grew up in Rye, and as a young kid in the 50s we had one car. Once a week, we would take my dad to work and mom would do her shopping and errands. Can’t tell you what a big deal it was to be in Portsmouth! There was a store downtown called J J NEWBERRYS that actually had THREE FLOORS!! City has changed so so much. Back then there were more bars per capita than anywhere else in the world (supposedly). Rye has changed also. Between grandparents, aunts and uncles there were 10 families related to me. 40 years later, not one family member left, except in the graveyards. It was a great place to grow up, though.

I live here and people don't call it "Pompey". Kind of like his mispronunciation of the name, not sure where he got that. However, the tour he gives is really a good representation of walking around the downtown and he obviously did some research on what he was going to see. When the city was incorporated in 1650, the name was changed from strawberry bank to Portsmouth to honor the colonial founder who was the head of the Portsmouth harbor in Hampshire. In New England and in New Hampshire all the names are either English or Indian.

Geese I miss this place. My dad was stationed there when they opened Pease AFB in 58-59. We stayed five years. I was 11-16 and the base was the best I ever lived at. Portsmouth is very pretty city. The traffic wasn’t bad and the seafood was killer I had a brother and sister born at the Naval Base in Kittery. When I was in the seventh grade I would run from the school downtown to a sub shop for lunch and eat while I walked back to school. I felt like I was skipping school for about half an hour There used to be a big prison for Navy folks in the harbor that looked like a huge castle. I think they closed it in the ‘60s. Very grim looking
