Portraits: Motanka: a traditional Ukrainian doll

Lyalka-motanka is a traditional Ukrainian toy, most often of a female figure. It is a symbol of fertility and wealth, and a protector of homes of Ukrainians.
What is interesting is that this doll is made without any stitches. The word “мотати” - “motaty” means to roll, so the doll is made by rolling the threads and ribbons, or sometimes making knots, to keep its parts stay together.
The doll’s most noticeable feature is a cross-like face, that was a symbol of sun for the ancient Slavs. People believed that if a doll had eyes, evil spirits could get inside the doll though them and make her alive. That is why the face has a rather schematic look.
There are many variations of how to make the doll. Once you have the cross-life face and attach its parts together by rolling the thread, everything else becomes up to its maker.

Very interesting video.I especially love the intricate pattern on the face. So pretty. I would love to make one, and I have been researching the topic. 3 things I read. 1. You must only use 1 thread, which will end at the navel, in a knot, symbolic of our umbilical cord. . 2. You must always wind the thread in the direction or path of the sun, from east to west. 3. You can never cut anything with scissors, once it is part of the doll, and you can never pierce the doll with a needle. I understand that one believes the talisman holds power. If I were to attempt to make one, I would want to follow the rules.
