Amazing technique. It's so interesting to watch the details of the face emerge from the blocky shapes both slowly and yet somehow all at once. Thanks so much for sharing!

Thank you. It's all about getting the big shapes right underneath for the details to fit into place. Like decorating a cake with icing, you've got to bake the cake underneath first.

I have an art degree and I'm still amazed at the difference a few highlights make between 1:58 and 2:00. The nose went from completely flat to depth with minimal strokes.

Iwas like "wow he'sdone so much in just a few minutes" then I heard it had been 45min up to that point and I got a big relief. I know it takes time and won't rush next time
Great painting - you have captured the character of your model wonderfully.
Man is this helpful. I've just started learning to paint portraits in oil and have been struggling with making a few detailed portions like the eyes and part of the face in the first hour than burning out before I can cover the canvas and finish the painting properly, because I just can't simplify the subject, this method is like the perfect solution to that. I'm definitely going to use this method from now on.
I love your process, it's so simple yet so effective

This is helpful. You simplified the beginning stages making it easier to focus on shapes and color rather than having a perfect drawing and starting form that. Thank you for this.
I keep returning to this video. It is easily the best portrait video on KZread. The artist achieves a stunning likeness from life, beginning with a simple massing approach.
Fantastic how beautifully the portrait emerged starting with the so-simple initial blocking-in stage. Learned so much about alla prima painting. Very inspiring. Thank you!
This is mind blowing. Literally let out an audible "WOW" at 1:25 when the two simple blocks of color already started looking like a face. Completely reshaped the way I thought I should approach painting.
Appreciating your work more and more, Alex.
I love portrait art, there's something special about a face... The face is the mirror of the mind, the eyes of people reflect the desires of their heart... I guess life is a reflection of what we allow ourselves to see... eyes are very similar to paintings in that regard, eyes often times say more then words can... if you can say it in words there's no need to paint it... Painting is easy when you don't know how, but very difficult when you do. - Edgar Degas

Hi Alex, First time I have seen you and thanks for a great demonstration. Good to see an artist using a traditional method of painting from the outside in, also, having their subject on the Correct Side i.e you are left handed like yours truly, so you place your subject on the right. You would be surprised how many artist place their subject on the wrong side and wonder why they go wrong. I have seen this happen so many times. Every success to you.

Loved the simplification. Would have loved to hear a little more about how you were able to layer wet paint over paint without it mixing with the layers underneath. Did you have thicker paint on top ? Did you add more medium? Did you wait for it to dry? Thank you!
Thank you. I'm learning so much. ♥

Thanks. I'm working on doing a real time demo. But it is a lot more involved, with several cameras to cut away to palette to show me mixing colours and close up on details. I have to use a film crew to shoot and edit so unfortunately it can't give it away for free.

Nice. I've never seen this done, although there were teachers where I went to school who did it this way. I always did a dry toned ground and drew over it with chalk before filling in color.

Plenty of great artists work that way. This way is more immediate and allows you to work quicker. Which is fine for a head and shoulder s portrait but for a more complicated composition which I would spend longer on, like multiple figures in a setting, I would probably draw most of it first.
Excellent direction of lines;
Thank you! Very helpful.
