Yeah when that line came out I was like damn cause if Heloise thought about Marianne she did it conciously and that mean she accepted her feelings towards Marianne as opposed to dreaming about her which is done subconciously. Also if you dream about someone that doesnt necesserally means anything but if you think about someone (positvely) that means you care about them.

Yehonatan Abutbul Hit the nail right on the head. That moment was so pivotal because Héloïse finally saw Marianne through for who she really was. Just as Marianne opened up her acknowledgement of Héloïse's presence by asking her to look at her, Héloïse does the exact same by opening up her true feelings to Marianne, because she understands that her acknowledgement was also a gesture of sharing, which in return is a shape of love.

at the end, the artist (Marianne) is sitting on the balcony at the theater. This shows you that she is a very successful artist and art teacher who can afford to sit with the wealthy people. I love how this shows that Marianne is a self made successful woman.

The last shot is my favourite ending. It tied everything in the film together and broke out a couple of tears out of me. It's essentially Marianne's last portrait (and the last portrait of the film) of Heloise; the last image of her that will be burnt into her memory before she dies. But it's a portrait of Heloise reacting to Vivaldi for the first time, which reminds her of when Marianne played it for her on the harpsicord. It's like an amazing triangle, where Marianne is watching Heloise, Heloise watching the orchestra, which in turn reminds her (and therefore brings up the image of her).

I really loved this movie, it feels superior than “Call me by your name”, the dynamic between the two main characters feels deeper emotionally than this sensation to fantasize the other person. I loved the creative process of the portrait just comparing the first and last portrait, when the first was aesthetic but it didn’t feel real or with presence. The last portrait shows off how really Marianne sees Heloise in her own eyes.

So the first time Heloise wanted to kiss Merriane, was their real first encounter when she played her the orchestra music when she said she’ll let her be free to go to church by herself. Thats why the closing shot of the movie is Heloise crying. She is reminded of the music that merriane played on the piano. Fucking heartbreaking

I just disagree that there is a "lead" and "supporting role" in this movie. The whole point is that they work together and share intimacy and philosophy of love and art together, so both characters are equaly important. Its also interesting that none of you guys mentioned the filmaking background of the story: The film was practicaly made for Adele Haenel who plays Heloise, being not just one of the most recognised and popular young French actresses at the moment, but also a radical feminist activist, whose presence in the movie is a result of very conscious decision to make something feminist together with the director Celine Sciamma, who is a real intellectual, kind of ingenious person, I must say. The content and the script of this movie combined with photography and excellent acting - makes this film a masterpiece, like a whole level above the 90 percents of the movies usually considered great and awarded.

I am straight and this movie hit me so hard because, to me, it's not a story about gay love, it's just a story about love. When you are young, you dream of love... finding it and keeping it. When you are older, you look back over your life and wonder if you ever really felt it or had it... like this. Even for two weeks, to be loved, mutually and to know what that feels like... have I? I don't think so. Not like this. No. For someone to stay with you for years and years like that. That's so powerful. Of course, in a different time, our modern time, maybe they would have married each other and eventually, the relationship would break down like so many do. My romances have the tragedy of completion. Would I have been wistful like this if they had been prematurely aborted? Maybe. Maybe that's why this was so tragic. They never had the chance to let their love run its course, for better or worse. They are both left as just memories of one another, frozen in a moment, frozen in images.

So my rankings of the endings are. 1,3,2 I love the third ending because the entire film has been scoreless (minus the dress fire scene) and we are living with the characters in their word the. The orchestra comes in and blows you away and reverberates through your chest, and allows you to be a participant in hearing an orchestra for the first time. Also just watching her experiencing the music and how it ties into her memories with Eloise is amazing.

loved this movie, what I see was these two women were two different worlds. Heloise lives in a convent and only came out because her sister died and she was to take her place to marry a man she did not know. these sort of arrangements were done then 1760. Marianne was worldly in Heloise's eyes. she craved the outside world, she wanted to know all about it. she wanted books, music, tobacco. friends and love, even to swim. the sound was great, because of no music the feeling of observing was at it's highest. the footsteps, cloth movement, breathing, the kisses, doors opening and closing, fireplace crackle, all of it just brought me closer to the storyline and the women. A painting was how Heloise's mother got married and how she was able to live the life she lived as a contessa she would be going with her daughter when she married. so much more...

It's been 2 years, but I wanted to point out that Héloïse actually says "Maybe she's the one who told him to turn around" about the book, and it ties perfectly with the "first ending" when Héloïse asks Marianne to turn around. It's like she's telling her this is it, to move on and forget about her. Like in the book him turning around meant losing his wife, here when Marianne turns arounds she accepts that this is it. And I think that's why she doesn't go see her in the theater, because when she turned around, she agreed it was the end, just like Orpheus by turning around.

Late to this party as I just discovered this film, my mom‘s illness, passing, and the pandemic all blended together so I’m just now catching up. I love the overall excitement and enthusiasm for this film, I am in my 50s and I’ve never experienced anything like it. I believe it was a harpsichord Marianne played as that would be accurate for the time period, it’s been a few years by the time Marianne sees Heloise at the Theatre. Her mother seemed to have negotiated a marriage and situation for them that would maintain their social and financial status, Marianne has the same status it seems but the agency to obtain it on her own, even though she still has to paint in her father’s name and actually stand there to let people know it was her, she has to work to fight for her own name and reputation. I’m thinking Heloise would have been to the orchestra many times by now with the years living in Milan, but I’m guessing whenever they play this piece she requests to go alone because she knows she wants to be alone with her thoughts and memories for it. I don’t think she knows Marianne is there, they seem to have the capability to find each other again but to what end? Neither want harm to come to the other if they resisted and that decision was made that day long ago. It is finished. I’m sure there could be a version where they secretly see each other but I feel like the reference to Eurydice is that they truly chose memories and put this love affair and it’s perfect thrilling passionate and heartbreaking story away and open it from time to time. Heloise obviously had the influence to be able to tell the new painter and her husband that she was going to put this book and page number in the painting for her own reasons and clearly succeeded. I Would have loved to see that conversation. Celine and these women created something so special here, I Cant get it out of my system and keep looking for outlets to deal with it. Thanks for posting this review.

Brilliant insight, especially on the three endings. The official ending remains my favourite still. It not only rams home the feeling that she was living a life she didn't choose but also reflected beautifully on the power of love. Beyond this, the ending tells us that she is still on her journey to explore freedom in a way, something that she always wanted to do. She is sitting there all alone, experiencing something beautiful she was advised to experience by a very special person she admires till date. And of course it involves a great callback to a moment both the lovers cherish, all of which lead the tears to escape.

I never thought a deeply romantic and original movie like this would be successful in today's sloppy , and unromantic world. Glad to see people can still identify and appreciate a very touching and poetically deep, love story, regardless of the sex of the protagonists! We must also recognize the poetic lyrism of the author and the immortality of her creation. Truly romantic and unforgettable!

Maybe the choice of les misérables as contestant for the Oscars can be explained by the social climate in France. The yellow vest movement has shown an unknown violence of the police. Ladj ly in his film denounce that violence which is common in the poor suburbs. He said "since 20 years we are yellow vests". Although I prefer portrait a lot, the choice might be seen as a political one

Regarding the maid..I believe the point was that abortion has been something women have dealt with forever, they are just forbidden to display it. Just like Marianne is forbidden to paint nude men. For a brief time on the island though they get to be free. So Heloise decides they should paint the abortion so it wont just be forgotten. As for the dress on fire scene. I thought Heloise and Marianne were just so entranced by each others gaze that Heloise didn't notice and then didnt care that her dress was on fire if it meant looking at her a bit longer.

I read in Tumblr that maybe the scene of the burning dress symbolized the burning desire that both of them had.

Also Heloise first wanted to kiss Marianne during their Vivaldi summer scene. Love the fact that Marianne remembers and Heloise breaks down in that orchestra scene.

@@pooty195 Without the unplanned pregnancy, they wouldn't have been at a bonfire with witches. Without that bonfire, Marianne wouldn't have been inspired to create her painting. Marianne has had an abortion before. It's only during the abortion sideplot where Marianne has her hands in her pockets -- and Céline can talk to you all about pockets ;) -- she's implying that abortion is/was a taboo subject and should be hidden. It's Héloïse that then tells Marianne to witness the abortion. Héloïse is contemporary in thought and recognize the importance of documenting such hidden, taboo, but realistic events. Kind of like in Little Women how Amy remarks that writing stories about their lives is what makes them more important.
