I’m incredibly thankful that you decided not to take that position because then you wouldn’t be here, helping others. I’ve learned so much from you over the past year.

This illustrates much of the reason why I do not accept commissions for portraits. Because nearly all buyers desire a rather banal photographic likeness. In fact, nearly all portrait painters base their painting strictly on a photograph. Because of these expectations, buyers do not typically expect or want a more "artistic" painting. I believe an artist should seek artistic expression above just doing ordinary portraiture for a certain number of dollars in income. I have had potential buyers say "I will pay you anything you want to charge", and I still decline the opportunity.

Same position. When relatives ask I agree because I love them. But it’s understood. No money exchanged. . Maybe an order of hot wings during football season but that’s all. Plus I require ALL pictures with shadow, angle, unposed etc.

Commission works are meant to match their expectations, not artist's . If u have problem ,do self portraits and experiment there.

@@ritamchatterjee1 Exactly. I do self portraits but most of my human figures or portraits are imaginary. On rare occasion the subject is based on a photo of a certain person, but I would never want to do "photographic realism" because that is a pointless exercise.

@@KpxUrz5745- Portrait painting is an artisanal matter, it requires skill and knowledge - like in this video. Imaginary portraits are not really portraits, are they? Many times it's just the shortcomings of the painter, disguised as "real art". Let's get rid of these misunderstandings
