If you continue north along the mainland coast, the more north you go, the nicer the area and the nicer the anchorages. Once you've gone far enough to go through the Halkitha (Chalchis) channel and under the bridge, you're into some of the loveliest places anchorages - both on the mainland and on Halkitha - which are very rarely seen by the average cruiser. One of my favourite bays is found at 38°30'25.5"N, 23°20'13.7"E 'Skorponeria'..... There's a 60+ foot steel schooner, 'Morning Star' kept on a buoy there as well. Anyway, all that area and still further north is fantastic.

Unfortunately we needed to get hauled out fairly quickly, so we didn't really get much time to explore once we were north of Chalkida.

@@SailingABSea I use Heikell's 'Greek Water Pilot', which is good, but nowhere near as good as being able to see videos such as yours of anchorages in 'real life'.... thanks........ The amazing thing about the Med is that although I've been sailing the Med for nearly 50 years now, there are always more bays and anchorages to be found!

Nice safe anchorage. Spent a few days there. A popular area is a little to the south in the larger bay right in front of the grocery store. Very convenient re-supplying although a longish walk into the town proper but having walked around the town itself much cleaner and peace of mind to be further away.

Just one more, even more incredible anchorage if you like peace and quiet, is the island of Levitha in the Cyclades! It's a great family favourite and found at 37°00'09.9"N, 26°28'09.2"E........ just a couple of shepherd families on the whole island and being enterprising Greeks, although it's a easy place to anchor, they've set a few buoys for visitors just where I've indicated and you could stay year round well sheltered from meltemis and any winter storms. The old shepherd and his wife have a sort of taverna in their home and they slaughter their sheep and goats fresh, so the food is always excellent and very cheap! We've been there quite a number of times over the decades, though I haven't dropped in there due to other sailing commitments for some 4 or 5 years now. I'm told that it's still just as good now by all the cruisers I've sent that way!

Agreed Levitha was an overnight stop for us, we got the last remaining mooring ball. Quite a nice walk up to the family compound.

I wouldn’t know anything about that place but, just looking at the map, I would caution against anchoring there when strong southerlies are expected. Also, when the Meltemis blow the northern part of the main bay would be the only protected place. Alternatively, the port itself where space might be a problem.

Hi guys - sorry off topic - but may be helpful for others as well. Currently stuck in Kos and can not leave for TR. Did you guys have any issues leaving GR for TR? Did you guys get an exit stamp or just wander over the border as has been suggested to me by people. Many thanks for any info

Hi Mat, we have been hearing reports that yachts have also been stopped from leaving Rhodes to head to Turkey, we can now add Kos to the list. We departed Greece from Pythagorio on Samos island and we had no problems being allowed to depart. At each office we visited (Immigration, customs and port police) we were advised each time that if we leave Greece then we could not come back until border restrictions were lifted. Probably not a good idea to just wander over the border. Let us know what your solution is.

@@SailingABSea Thanks for the quick reply. Much appreciated as time is ticking. Only options are Cypress, Montenegro, Tunisia. Will let you and others know when/how. Next Monday Oct 12 they will again make a statement whether to lift or keep in place restrictions - which I am told have been in place since March yet my contact in TR says boats have only been restricted for the past two weeks. The wandering was suggested by an old salt who has sailed these waters and has extensive time in TR having had both a home and boat there.
