Portland & Weymouth UK, 2023 - A great port of call!

We kick off our European cruise tour with Portland, UK. In our brief time there, we made some cool and surprising discoveries. Check it out!
Here at the Port Lowdown, we aim to create informative and entertaining videos about cruise port docks and ports-of-call for independent-minded travelers on a budget, who are looking for things “outside the usual”.

Thanks so much! We hope to come back for more excursions. It's also just a great place to hang out. The weather was just right that day, just a bit warm and humid.

I live just along the coast a bit from portland around 30 min drive. Glad you loved our beauty. I live in small village over looking the sea on jerrassic coast. Lots of Americans left from Weymouth and portland on D Day. The port you came into used too be a large Navy base. Some more history the torpedo was invented and built in Portland. Also one of the port entrances. They sunk HMS Hood between the gap to stop u boats in first world war and ww2 from getting to the navy ships. Not the same HMS Hood that was sunk by the Bismark but the one b4 that. That HMS Hood still lays there today. Also very early into the Battle of Britain Herman Gorings son was shot down and killed on Portland. Lots of history and lots more I've not said ie most the famous buildings in London are made out Porland stone and its still mined today.

I certainly want to come back and spend more time on Portland Island. I've heard of the quarries and Portland Bill, which are on my return list. What would you recommend? Is the beach worth a visit?

Its not a Casino its just Arcades, that's it all ages are allowed in there, but there are 18+ areas with slot machines that give out more than £50. Up to £800 for some. Why say Portland, UK in the title, when for 98% of the time you only show Weymouth.

Thanks for the correction! In America a slot machine = casino. So that was a new one for us. As far as Portland, that's the port we dock at and is indicated in the schedules. The shuttle bus, which drops off at Portland Castle (where we visited the Castletown D Day Center) and Weymouth only, is the easiest option for most cruisers.

@@ThePortLowdown Ok. Thanks for the reply. Guess a channel named ThePortLowdown means you only show where you docked at the start of your visit.
