Portland to Los Angeles 3 Day Road Trip: 30+ Stops Along the Drive
The drive from Portland to Los Angeles is almost 1,000 miles and it goes through most of California and Oregon. While most people do the drive as fast as possible, my dad and I decided to make an adventure out of it and stop at tons of different places. We spent 3 days driving the route, hiked to waterfalls, ate amazing food and even saw tule elk. Check out the video for our full road trip and let me know what your favorite stop is in the comments.

Man, pops must be so happy these last few years, your channel blowing up, twin grandkids, and your graduation. These trips must be icing on the cake for him.

What a stand-up guy your dad is. You are super lucky!
This was really fun. I am from LA, moved to Eugene in the late 80s, and have been in Portland now for the past 23 years. I got married at Skinner's Butte Park. Not at the top, but the park is also gorgeous. I used to live 5 minutes from Pip's! I also painted one of the murals in Springfield in 1993. It's the one behind the library.
I really love that you did this trip in the gloomy rain. Half of the experience in Oregon is going to an overlook, having the clouds block it all out and promising yourself to return on a clearer day. 🙂
I've never seen a finer father and son team on the screen!
You're so fortunate to be able to travel with your great father.
I love this, Since I can't go to special places like the ones you and your dad go to, im a caregiver to my mom. And places you see are awesome thank you so much.
I love how the area I live in was described as "the part of the trip without really anything to see". Couldn't have said it better myself lol

I prefer those areas to the hubs of mainstream culture where everyone gathers.
You are never going to regret that quality time with your Pops! Such a great relationship you two have! Thanks for taking us along on your adventures. Blessings to you both!
Love all your videos, specially when Pops is around, he's so funny! It's such a blessing for you to have the opportunity to enjoy and share all your video aventures with your dad. Not many of us are so lucky. Hugs! 💖
What a wonderful road trip for you and your pops. Lifetime memories.
Thank you guys so much!! This has been a life saver for me as I won’t get to really travel until retirement!!! Fantastic and you are so polite and kind to each other !! What a power of example !! Keep on keeping on !! ❤️🙏🏼✌🏼
As you produce more videos, they are ever more balanced, smoother transitions, cool/unique/interesting, professional, and....enjoyable. The father son, son father relationship aspect is unmatched in the travel blog world. I wouldn't be surprised if a network or film documentary picks you two up one day. Patience prevails.
I lost my Dad in 1981! You're very lucky to be able to share such amazing adventures with POP! Please keep up the awesome adventures. I truly enjoy them. I know many people mentioned and did ask what is your degree in and what school? Just curious!

Greg, have you been to a Psychic Medium to talk to your dad ???????????
Love your content. Your videos inspired me to take a last-second roadtrip up the PCH and Highway 1 from LA to Seattle from February 22nd to March 3rd with a college friend I hadn't seen in 4 years. Probably one of the best times of my life.
I can only imagine the amount of work that goes into these videos during the trip itself keeping track of everything and making notes. Thank you for posting all these great memories they keep me motivated to continue the journey in my own life. I can only hope I make them as exciting as yours.

@@travelwithpops I feel like a celebrity just replied to me lol You are the coolest dad on the planet, I’m jealous your son gets to travel all over with you.
No more classic dad move than pulling the umbrella away...lol, what the heck?!lol
Pops is a great food critic! His descriptions are highly descriptive!
Congrats on your graduation! It is amazing that you are taking these wonderful road trips with your pops.
The rain made this video 10x better..I love the rain
Another great video! Next time make a stop in and around Lodi. We’re about an hour south of Sacramento and the largest wine grape growing region in California. Over 85 wineries and nice downtown area to walk around. 😉
Fabulous as usual! Thanks so much for taking us with you on another one of your amazing road trips!
You and your dad is very lovely and I hope one day I will take my parents to tour like this too
I have really enjoyed so many of your videos, especially the ones with Pops, but this one was particularly special. I missed that you had twins, so a big congratulations! And congratulations on getting your doctorate! That is very impressive. I wanted to thank you for featuring this stretch of I-5. We will be driving from Sacramento into Oregon soon, so this gave me some ideas for stops. I am especially excited about the cheese recommendation. It was also fun to see places I have been, such as Ashland and Mt. Shasta, but in the winter. I didn’t know Ashland was so beautifully decorated for Christmas. I have driven from Sacramento to LA dozens of times, so it was also nice to know I haven’t been missing too much on that drive. I do have one comment about Bravo Farms. While it is a great stop when it isn’t crowded, it is a total madhouse during any holiday weekend. If you stop at such times, it is hard even getting in and out of the parking lots around there because of the terrible traffic flow. Unfortunately, when they built Bravo Farms, they did not plan for the traffic congestion it would cause. Consequently, I will no longer stop there during a holiday weekend. I have stopped at Harris Ranch many times, even on holiday weekends. It is an easier stop. Again, congratulations and thanks for this and all of your vlog!
Nothing better than father and son hanging out. My son and I have traveled the world together many times. So fun
Never take this time with Dad for granted. Like I see sons having fun with their dad, being treated as a friend just having fun, and it seems like a fake TV show. I am sure a lot of people feel the same way. Seems like everyone I know, myself included, have fathers who have zero love of life, and everything is either an "I'm your dad, not your buddy" kinda feel or feels more like a chore than a pleasure. I don't know many people who just want to hang out with their dad and especially do things with them like they would a friend. That is special (unfortunately) and you have something there so spend all that time you can!
Always love your travel videos w/ great tips on stops & food.. we've used your plans for multiple trips so far, all wonderful and cover almost everything! So cool and special to see you travel around w/ your Pops, not just your wife & kids... fun to see him have a blast & time with you, and get to see thumbs-up second reviews of things :) Whether virtual travel via video, helping us research future trips, or just enjoying great scenery & photography, you are always the best! Many thanks & happy trails! Congrats on graduation!
Congratulations on your graduation! Very unique places to see along I-5. We have driven it on the way to Napa. Lots of rain thru Oregon. Then we drove back to Seattle along Hwy 1 which was interesting thru Crescent City.
I found this just as I’m planning a drive from SD to Seattle via Yosemite. I love detours of any kind and you’ve given me lots of ideas.
I love what you guys eat. You've also given me courage to try far more new things than I do now. Love these videos!
I always look forward to seeing your videos. I just love them. Thanks so much for sharing your trips. Stay safe. Congratulations on your graduation 🧑🎓
Wow! What a wonderful episode. I can't wrap my head around how much snow you guys have. I'm 57 & have never seen poor touched snow. Here in South Australia we don't have snow & our winters contain just rain & @ times hail. The scenery over there is just magnificent. It's always good to see you with your dad. Wee to have 1 1/2 year old twin grandchildren who make us feel so young. It is good to know that you can explore different places with your family. These are magic moments. Thank you again & kind regards from Adelaide South Australia from Adelaide, South Australia.
Love watching u guys! I was raised in Oregon & my mom's family was all in CA so I've done that drive many times. U actually had some places that I wasn't aware of. Thanks so much! Keep doing what you're doing 😍
Thanks for sharing this video. Seeing all your recommendations were great. My favorite being the waterfalls
Dude you doing an amazing job!! Keep it up. However, I really enjoyed this video more, because you integrate some extra content for each stop that you made.
Our family really enjoys your channel! Thank you for all your hard work! It helps us on our trips :-)
Awesome trip you took. Thks a lot for the video. Always enjoy your videos
Beautiful review of a beautiful area. Thank you for sharing it with us.
I totally enjoy your foodie experiences thank you
Looking forward to stopping at these places! When I was a kid the tour of the inside of the Shasta Dam blew my mind. Maybe tours will resume someday.
Enjoy your trip video, great intro. to the attractions on the road, and your humurous "pop", looking forward to your next episode...
Great Video 😍 Enjoyed watching it. Thanks for sharing
Merry Christmas and happy new year great video ❤ I love watching you guys eat your breakfast lunch and dinner always looks amazing ❤
What a beautiful trip. I loved every stop along the way. I am so glad you drove, I got to see everything. We live in the gold country of CA five miles up the mountain from James Marshall State Park. Beautiful here too.
So many spots to check out 👍 thanks for sharing
I love your channel, Josh you and your dad do a great job, the Route 66 tour was amazing ,
Thanks for the suggestion of Archive Coffee. I got to stop by while working in the area, it was awesome.
Thank you for posting all these great memories. I like your channel very much!
great job, great relationship with dad. keep the videos coming. god bless
You should come back and do the Oregon Coast, the Dunes, and Hwy 20 drive to Bend. I was raised in Southern California from age 7 to age 60. Been in Oregon for going on 7 years and I have to say you missed a lot of beautiful areas.
Watching when you two stopped at Redding and checked out the Sundial Bridge was awesome. I went there this past August and loved it. Long drive from Utah but so worth it. Obviously, I hung out mostly at Burney Falls. Great video as always.
Oh that's a nice road trip back, got to try it out one day.
I used to work at Rogue Creamery back in the day. Fun job.
I'm from Scarborough UK , love your uploads lad , some amazing places I hope to visit , get ya sen over here !!
I'm busy at the moment but I'm really looking forward to watching the video at the weekend with a nice breakfast. It's almost a tradition for me :)
Thanks
I really enjoy your videos! Keep up the great work!
Im planning a road trip from LA to Washington early next year so this is very helpful! ( I always come to your videos when planning a trip 😊)
10:15 pucks donuts actually just reopened today(1 24 23) we are glad to have them back
Thank you for talking about Harris Ranch and I'm glad you liked it... or at least the restaurant, $$$... lol I grew up on my Uncle's ranch just a few miles from there and my Grandfather actually came from Texas to California years ago and actually came with Mr. Jack Harris where they started the first cotton gin in Porterville. The family has known the Harris family for many years... Great video!!!
So that Sundial bridge looked pretty interesting. Great video as always so keep up the fantastic work.

Neat hidden thing about Sundial bridge are the cliff swallows building mud nests under the glass walkway, you can see into the nest and even see hatchlings or eggs.. we saw some Memorial Day wkend few years ago, worried about the heat (103F+)! The Turtle Bay museum & garden was great for kids and just to cool off and learn about the dam & nature.
I love your videos! Thank you! I just discovered you a few months ago.
i was in that area back in 1975 while still in the service..we traveled from Portland going east all the way to the Dalles and tri city Pasco, Kennewick and i forgot the last place.. Seeing that Multnomah falls reminded me of that trip.. a long long time ago..,

As long as you pack waterproof gear, it's great. It does not rain in summer, but watch out for November...
Thank you for what you do
Great video. I’ve never been north of Sacramento on the 5. Now I really have to go!
Thank you for this wonderful way of seeing the world!
Love your travel video, as usual. Congrats on your graduation! What impressive degree did you earn? Nice job!
Another awesome Roadtrip video with Pops Josh… and very representative of I-5 along this way. You stopped at several of our favorite spots and introduced us to a couple new ones. Glad you made it to Archive Coffee this time. Eugene is one of our favorite stops. Cornbread Cafe for vegan southern comfort food was also on Drive-ins, Diners and Dives and Tacovore for tacos of course. Thanks for pointing out the Simpsons-Springfield connection. I did not know that. Will definitely have to check Rogue Creamery is a threefer for us as the winery-David Leger and the chocolate shop are equally wonderful. Will have to check out the walk-behind waterfall next time we are by. Lived in Sacramento for 40 years so all familiar. Walked by the Capitol for many years on the way to work. You should consider taking the Underground Sacramento history tour similar to its more famous cousin Underground Seattle tour. As a vegetarian not a fan of Harris Ranch with its humongous stockyard adjacent to the restaurant- too close a connection from hoof to mouth. Thanks for bringing us along.
When I was 9, my grandmother and I did a roadtrip going the other direction from Woodland, CA to Tillamook, OR. Our goal was to eat as much clam chowder as possible. I'm so glad you've discovered Yak's. I was told at one point they had locations in Redding and I believe Yreka as well. Dunsmuir used to a be a work stop for me, and I too would always make it a point to stop. Also, you missed Granzella's in Williams. They have the best milkshake on I-5.
Great video! Next time, be sure to stop at Pea Soup Anderson's -- it's a staple of that I5 trip!
Another awesome video Josh and Pops, loved it. You guys definitely pick the best places to eat, always!!! You saw so many great spots. I’m really hoping I can get back over there again soon, it’s a long way from Perth Western Australia with a family of four. It’s been a little while since I’ve had time to properly watch your channel so I’ve about three or four videos to watch which I’m looking forward to. I noticed one of your videos is Pinnacles National Park. One of Western Australia’s most famous places to visit is Pinnacles Desert National Park (Nambung National Park) I invite you to Google pictures of it. As always in ultra professional travel video that’s also very entertaining and very down to earth. You’re always welcome to visit Perth and Western Australia, I’d love to help if you do. Great stuff Josh and Pops.
Thanks for the video, very informative.
Really nice road trip And always enjoy pop
Enchanted Forest is really cool. It's like disneyland for us Oregonians lol. I live 5 min away but its a good one for families. It has a few coasters, kids areas, walkthrough of fairytale stories and it's overall fun, espically if you enjoy a small theme park that isn't as loud or crowded as most amusement parks. It was nice knowing you came by to Salem! Love your channel and keep up the good work and tour of cities :)
I really enjoyed this. My son is in Portland, I'm in LA. We both lived in Phoenix, Oregon, moved after the Almeda fire. But coming back to Ashland someday. Every place from I-5 in Oregon and Northern California is so pretty and fun to visit.
Wow, what a trip, wish I lived on the West coast!!
I used to drive this route back and forth a lot, and sometimes from Seattle. It's going to be interesting to see what there is to see along I-5
Love all your videos! My favorite blogs to watch. You remind me of a younger Jeb Brooks who does videos on train travels. Also, a great stop between Eugene and Grants Pass is Wildlife Safari in Winston. It is a drive thru safari animal park with a free walkabout area. Must see!
I recently drove up to Portland because I’m a fan of Grimm & the Librarians. I should have look up your videos.
As someone who's made the trip up and down I-5 many times I thought I'd point out a couple places you should look for next time that weren't in this video. You should definitely check out K&R Drive In in Rice Hill, OR as they have amazing ice cream and are immediately off the highway. I'd also check out the Heaven on Earth restaurant in Azalea, OR to check out their cinnamon rolls and various pastries and desserts. There's some great suggestions in here though, thanks Josh and congratulations on graduating!
I've been to Enchanted Forest with my nephew in July, 2021 and it was pretty cool. Definitely a fun thing stop with the family. Even fun without kids too.

Between Clearlake and Yuba on Hwy 20 there are a Lot Of Elk...that occasionally decide the entire heard must cross the highway! Very odd!
Great tour🤙🏻
Thanks to the shout out to Sacramento, my home town.❤ FYI- every plant and tree in capital park is native to California 😉!

Did this exact same drive earlier this year. Took me 13 hours and 30 minutes from LA to PDX. Love how the scenery changes dramatically once pass Redding CA. Where the cascades officially begin in California

Yea I agree, the scenery change is crazy
Umpaqua National Forest is a MUST see destination in OR. Sooo lovely. Waterfalls 4 days. Newport OR is also great, north west coastal town past Eugene.
Seeing Grants Pass reminded me the President Grant ($50 dollar bill guy) was stationed in Eureka, Ca at fort Humboldt before he was sent east to command in the civil war. Rumor is that he would often drink while singing and being rowed around Humboldt bay by his valet. Fort Humboldt in Eureka is totally restored and you can tour it, if you want. Great video as usual Josh and Pops right on guys!
Thank you so much ❣️
I dunno. That raininess seems perfect for Oregon! Also, this was a missed opportunity to get can of Shasta in your 3 Shastas shot 😆
