The inconvenient truth is that most homeless in Portland were born and raised in Multnomah County. That's right, the homeless issue is homemade. And the lack of affordable housing in the city, both for single family units and apartments means more of this. The zoning in Portland exacerbates inequality and makes the city of roses appear as a slum, with no new units being built and more people pushed to the margins of society. The homeowners dare not let more units be built in their exclusive Portland neighborhood, that would mean a possible devaluation to their multimillion dollar property built in 1910 with lead pipes. It's all so tiresome.

Construction of apartments is at an all time high and you are incorrect about zoning. The city just allowed 4x density on single home lots. The only complaints I've read were East Portland where they want to build new shelters.

The opposite is true according to this recent article on the housing situation: www.oregonlive.com/business/2021/03/portland-apartment-construction-faces-steep-falloff-outpacing-other-cities.html From the article "Developers say policies Portland and Oregon adopted to make housing more affordable will have the opposite effect, making rents much more expensive by severely constraining supply". It's as simple as that, supply is needed, and fast. You can't debate or politicize your way out of it, but a lot of voters in Portland think they can. Build more housing and stop adding laws that scare investors trying to build housing away. And that recent rezone allowing 4x is a pittance, it's like spitting in the ocean.

They are all drug addicts, "working girls", thieves and bums. Not Victims. Rents have ALWAYS been too high. They all believe they are Victims. It's hard to have pride in one self when you feel like a victim, and easy to loose hope. I'm done with trying to help any of them. was a time i tried to be generous with a few of them in my neighborhood, giving them a 20 every once in a while, but they all started to feel entitled to my generosity, and would be at my door when things got really hard and ask to "borrow". a twenty. Not one of them knew the meaning of the word and never paid back a loan. when they came around again to "borrow". i would explain that i had given them a loan and not charity they got angry and would dis respect me if i ever met them in the neighborhood. I have now a few homeless neighbors who have forgotten about my charity and only bear a grudge against me. No good deed ever goes un punished.

Yes and no. Many adults know and have moved because they know they can’t afford some areas…even if they were raised there, even if that is where they prefer to be. I can afford some zip codes, others I can’t, so I move. But it’s very hard to force people to leave for housing elsewhere in the state, if they will be homeless to stay in the area they prefer. There should be housing provided in affordable neighborhoods with a 5-year of so time limit for able-bodied adults, but people may have to go to where that housing is within the state, and not demand to stay in the high priced downtown areas, or even in some expensive cities, like Portland. And often the best is to simply pay for rent for the homeless in studio apartments in existing buildings….then there is not one area overwhelmed with a large encampment, and local landlord gets paid. But it’s still not easy, and almost insoluble. Many landlords have had bad experiences with housing the homeless. The homeless range from hardworking, responsible people, who had a medical issue or where minimum wage doesn’t make ends meet, to those with difficult mental health issues or severe substance abuse they aren’t interested in stopping. The latter don’t make good neighbors in apartments, and landlords may have no issue filling units with other renters….so aren’t interested. And having worked with the homeless, some percent have a huge aversion to any kind of rules or regulation, which they see as “being controlled.” Many of those will not go to shelters or housing, due to those having many rules. It’s just a complex issue.

When I was a kid those little huts would have been awesome.

What a kind man. We ALL should see this homelessness as a blemish in some of the richest countries in the world. These are people that deserve better.

Always have two exits. You never know when you'll need an Emergency exit. As others wrote, you need holes for fresh air. To release built up humidity, too.

Maybe…it’s a great gesture, but there a many such small housing units for the homeless and there are plenty of cheap but decent housing options, like Conestoga huts. But the hard part is always the land underneath, meaning WHERE do you put these little shelters? On sidewalks? Lining the sides of roads, or in park land? In parking lots.? And along with the “where” are more tough questions like….how many in one spot, especially as they have no bathroom or trash service. How long can people leave them in one spot? Can anyone plop one down in a neighborhood and live there? And if you say in a parking lot of a strip mall, businesses and nearby home owners will object, and they aren’t just being whiny. The homeless vary hugely…some will be very responsible neighbors and bother no one, and some will steal repeatedly from nearby businesses, use the escalator at the local subway as their bathroom, or heap trash around their hut. It’s just a really tough issue as land is now so expensive, especially in downtown areas. The best would be in small paved areas with a shared, but decent, bathroom/kitchen facility, such as church parking lots, but then there are questions of rules, to keep everyone safe, and what happens if they are broken….can the people be kicked out? To go where? And not many churches would even offer people a place to park these.

You can call it a dog house, a cage, idk. If you are homeless and shelters are full, it’s wrong to think people can live like this. I don’t mind contributing a little of what I have to help get the homeless a shelter on horrible cold days or nights. Granted it’s because people have made some bad choices, or even mental illness but they are homeless nonetheless. I bet the homeless people wouldn’t mind helping to build these conestoga huts. I do agree with one person who said they need wheels, that way they could pull them where they go!

The only way you get the homeless off the street is get to the ground level of how and why they end up homeless and what’s preventing them from renting their own apartment or room share in someone else household.

As a previously homeless person I can tell you its shocking how it happens. Something happens or you screw up and noone is there for you. For me everyone thought I could do better when it was the one time in my life where I needed help the most. I couldn't work. I became disabled (still cant), once your home is gone atability is gone, security is gone. I about went insane with lavk of sleep and proper rest. Its an impossible situation to just walk out of. I didnt have a deug problem either. My problem was getting sick with Long COVID, CPTSD from trauma and a big bout of bad luck. I only got out with a LTD settlement. I didnt think I was gonna make it though I was so insanly weak and vulnerable . My cognitive functions were shot I was hallucinating with lack of rest. Things go downhill FAST. Friends and family dissapear FAST the minute you show signs of needing permanent and sustained help. Nobody has room in thier lives to help others, and when they do they get all personal about it. Dangerous even. And the old "what your not over that yet? You STILL need help?" Like it can be fixed that fast.

my imagination is pretty keen and I myself can think of several potentially unsafe scenarios happening with those structures. Besides, the people are still sleeping on the street in temporary, at best, shelter.

You have to actually build homeless shelters then give them the option and if they still wanna be a pain in the ass to society you arrest them for whatever numerous crimes they are committing on a daily basis.

They need to be manufactured and they need four wheels so that they can be pushed. Each one will have its own number identification like a license plate to the owner. Has all the amenities.

Looks like a cool doghouse. Making things easier for homeless people like giving them shelters will attract more homeless. Will this housing stop them from doing drugs, stealing, vandalizing, pooping or pissing on the streets or even walking around naked ? Probably not. All this housing does is makes it more comfortable for their lifestyle and makes them NOT want to leave. Portland is a Mecca for the homeless. This will make it worse.

That structure would house one or two persons. Only 200,000 more people needed to donate $5,000 each and we might make a meaningful dent in the homeless problem. Of course we would need to replace the homes burned down by drug addicts themselves. Magic thinking doesn't solve anything except provide vacuous virtue-signalling for the clueless. You give them the option for homeless shelters, then the start processing the rest of them thru the system. Either mental health, prison, or wherever they need to go. But we can’t provide any of that so this is what we get now.

Maybe if they were able to afford the rent there would be less homeless. I had zla apartment 8 years rent was $800 plus water garbage sewer no problem I could pay that, then when my lease came up they wanted me out I left the apartment in better shape then when I moved in come to find out they were doing this to everyone who had lived there for years. Raised the rent to $1300 plus wgs. This was a company from California. I did not end up homeless but almost.

That’s true to an extent. But the citizens accept the trade off because they’re making more on their real estate than they are at their jobs damn near. And they’re too cheap and stingy to provide homeless shelters like decent human beings would do.

A nice idea, but the issue is not with cheap shelter….many options for that like a yurt, Conestoga hut, etc. The question is always “where? On what land can people put this or other shelters? On city or suburban sidewalks? Beside the road? In parkland? Etc, And how long can they stay, and how many, especially as there is no bathrooms in these or any trash service. The “where/on what land” is the really hard part. Everyone thinks the homeless should be able to stay….somewhere, but don’t want an encampment or shelter in their neighborhood.

These are good questions, but why no attempt at answers or solutions in your comment? Why are we not utilizing the young to answers some of these questions? Why are we not creating think tanks in our high schools and colleges to answer these questions? It is their future that will be impacted the most by these issues. Not only by the solutions they come up with but also preparing them to be their future.

Homeless Industrial COmplex: it pays to be a non profit enabler.

That's great and all but where are you gonna put them? Is it gonna be miles from all the resources they need to stay alive? Because those are already spread miles apart. For instance you can get a meal every Wed and Fri at this church by the waterfront but Thursdays meal is clear across town. There's only 1 public restroom so you can only go so far...

Nice!!! What do you do when you’re forced to move? All you need is some place to put it.

Thoughts and Suggestions: Just curious...besides being a great idea, have those portable plastic units been tested inside and outside for sun temperatures, fire/smoke for the safety of human, animal contacts exposures/inhalations reactions of those environments?

Great idea and practical. And the best part is you would be able to skip going to a shelter and straight to housing.

You may want them to move on, but we want them to stay with you. They would have to work in our town.

I've always wanted to build stuff like that to live on my own property but here it's not legal to live on your own property without a permitted building. A permit is around 23k for a home..

@Plethora.of.Pinatas There are lots of places you can do that, you need to research each area. If you are going to buy land, it needs to be recreational coded. There are also places that allow tiny houses, one in Texas but I don't remember the name, but more too in other places. And to live in you will need a source of water, and something to do with the sewer waste, but some places allow water brought in, and outdoor toilets. If you want it bad enough, you can find a perfect place.

Most people want help you buffoon. Even homeless that get a job have issues keeping said job because of MULTIPLE reasons. They don't have a vehicle/mode of transport to said job. No where to go to shower/sleep. Mental incapability's, etc... if you've never been homeless or actually seen it up close or cared enough to learn what it's like, politely shut the fuck up.

it would take a utility trailer to move it..and to me. thats lowering your people to a big DOGHOUSE..also in usa , the police would confiscate that in a heartbeat.. im not homeless, but i think a nice hammock tent and a 4 wheel beach cart to carry your belongings in.... now your mobile and protected you can pick up and leave when asked.... been watching steve willis camping w/ steve .. and he makes being homeless look easy..useing a simple backpack.. i spent 6 months at a mcdees parking lot ,in a ugly 30 yr old van 1985 dodge b250 i moved 3 days a week for work..lol even had mail delivered there, the manager was kool , i was old back then lol 10 yrs later im now 56 and have a hummer h2, a rv class c and going into a boat next year, ive not owned a home or apartment since 2006.. lived 8 yrs in a semi, trucking the usa..lol ive seen some stupid times..lol some folks its crime not me ..for me it was divorce that almost took me out..but im all better now.. wanna watch me sink a boat .. stick around.. comming next year...lol fair winds and fallowing seas

Non profit businesses are a scam. Lets just admit there are so many now getting on board the homeless industry. In order for these "non profit businesses" to succeed they have to grow. So lets grow the homeless industry and get more homeless clients and we aill get rich. We must realize living like this is just not acceptable and try to bring a little real life honor and pride back to our culture. As long as they feel they are victims, they can have no pride, they need to help themselves.

You can give them an entire house and they will end up right back where they are. Instead of wasting taxpayer money on stuff like this why not put more money in to mental health facilities? The only hope the homeless have is to get therapy and get off the drugs that keep them on the streets.

They NEED some sort of help like this. You seriously think they WANT to live like this? in a fucking Tube or a tent? Maybe a VERY small percentage are okay with it.

Geez... What happens when a compassionate person leaves out cat food for a hungry stray cat--the cat doesn't leave and more cats show up. What happens when you put a birdfeeder in your back yard--wildlife shows up and hangs around. While I won't impugn the motives of Portland's nonprofits, or question their compassion, I do criticize the results--increasing numbers of mentally ill and drug addicted homeless flocking to such cities. They are not solving homelessness, they are inviting it.

Nice idea, but something may go wrong with these. Majority of street homeless are heavy drug addicts. Many will heat drugs in these plastic tents, and does it mean they are more likely to overdose since smoke will not escape easily as before? I think if they are not on drugs, this might help them alot, but addicts might be dying even in larger numbers in these.
