Lyrics:
i was born
in a sudden embrace, i’m awake
so i study the shape of your face
you take what you’re given
“i only wanna do what’s good for you”
then at once,
i’m checking the doors and my weight
i can’t keep my hands from my face
i said, “mom, i’m so sorry,”
she smiled and said,
“darling, i don’t want you to worry cus
i’m on your side for the rest of your life
you’ll never be alone, don’t you worry my child
and now there’s an empty room you outgrew,
but i’m here for you
Ooh”
and i’ve known
the feeling you’ve had when you’re held
the comfort of being unwell
so something can cradle you
oh, i don’t need it
oh, i won’t grieve it
i’m on your side for the rest of your life
you’ll never be alone, don’t you worry my child
and now there’s an empty room you outgrew,
but i’m here for you
Ooh”
i’ll do right by you
i only wanna do what’s best for you
i’m on your side for the rest of your life
you’ll never be alone, don’t you worry my child
and though there’s an empty room you outgrew,
i’ll wait for you,
Ooh”
i’m on your side for the rest of your life
you’ll never be alone, don’t you worry my child
and now there’s an empty room you outgrew,
but i’m here for you
ooh”

Nice but I feel Shelter is a combined one for both mom and dad, parents, to be exact.. However there's a song called "Not All Heroes Wear Capes" by Owl City, another artist that I love and that's especially about dad.. Love that as well..

Some of us have more complicated relationships with our mothers. We didn’t have positive experiences growing up. Maybe felt like we weren’t wanted - that we were mistakes to them. Despite that, this song still hits pretty hard. My friends’ mothers took good care of me, and I’m lucky to be able to say something like that. That I felt I belonged to any family as a child. So I’ll just pretend this song and Shelter are about them: the heroes who took in someone else’s child and raised him with the patience, love, and attention he didn’t receive from the people who brought him into the world. They deserve at least that, I feel.

Thank you for sharing your perspective on this - I too didn't have a loving caring mother, so the song was making me sad. But thinking of it as being about someone who cared for and took you on helps a lot. I had a few figures like that - unfortunately they were few and far between, but the love they gave me in that time was more than my biological mother could.

My son and I have a complex relationship also, but he does know he is a little piece of me that will be connected and last forever more and no one loves him more...I wish you ❤ and a better life experience for your children.

I didn’t have a good mother in my life, but I became a mother to 4 amazing kiddos. I’ve worked hard to learn from the mistakes of my mother to try to give my children the opportunity to live a life I only dreamed of. To build those connections with them, those memories, those embraces. To celebrate them at every step of their accomplishments and to encourage them to keep going when they hit those unwanted obstacles in life. This song brought me to tears. Even if I didn’t grow up with a good mother, the experience I shared with her helped mold me in to the person I am today. So for that, I will always appreciate her. I just hope my children one day can see that and be able to do the same for theirs. I hope they continue to break the cycle. Thank you for such a beautiful song!

As someone who grew up in really abusive and neglectful households, I couldn’t help but burst into tears when I heard the line, “I’m on your side for the rest of your life.” I actually had to stop listening to this song and just leave it for a couple days while I mulled things over and found some extra closure I hadn’t known I needed. I’m not even a really emotional person, but that line just got to me. It cut me to the core. Anyway, I finally came back to this song later on and listened to the whole thing. It’s really beautiful, even though it’s also painful to listen to. Well done, Porter Robinson. Well done. 👏🏻

When I first saw the song title, I knew this would be the most important song to me from the album. I was not wrong at all. 11 years ago, I lost my mother at the age of 15, and to this day, it is still painful to have that embedded. I'm always told that she's proud of me, that she's smiling down on me, and this song reaffirms that, especially in the chorus. She'll be by my side no matter what I do and where I go. Here's to you, mom. Miss you tons.

Just lost my mom back in October, just about 2 years after losing my dad. I'm 26 now and often feel like a child "lost" in a grocery store. I'm not sure how I do it most days. Maybe it's resilience, maybe it's a defense mechanism, or maybe it's millions of years of evolutionary instinct focalized to a single point in my subconscious. This song was a pleasant surprise even if it jerked some tears. If you're in the comments looking to see who else has felt the way you do, well just know it'll all be alright.

I lost my mom at 10 and my dad at 23 (11 years ago). I still relate a lot to the feelings you describe. I actually spent many years being "over it" only to realize as an adult that I still carry a lot of pain and didn't get to really have a normal childhood, which has effects that will stay with me forever. I find ways to get through it and thrive, despite all that, though, and I'm glad you are as well.

It still hurts like it happened yesterday, but I know somehow I was meant to find this, to help me grieve properly, to help me remember the good, to help me live strong without falling into just sitting stagnent in my bed most days. Thank you, Porter, eternally, thank you. I know my mom is with me still, and she would be thanking you too, she would hsve loved this song.

I heard this song during Second Sky and I couldn’t stop sobbing. I recently lost my mom after her suffering for 2 years in a persistent vegetative state. I still think back to those pivotal moments and how I could’ve helped her in that moment instead of just doubting myself. I never saw this day coming, but I’m lucky I was able to receive some closure before my mom fell into this condition. Mom, I miss you dearly. All those memories that we shared, from you scolding me to come home earlier, to me sitting on your lap drunk crying about some girl…those memories are the things that offer me comfort and will help me keep moving forward. In 5 years, I’m going to be the same age as when you married Dad. Keep watching over me as I become an adult, yeah? Love you forever, and thank you Porter for speaking to me through this song. ❤️

it's only really just occurred to me - i always found the photographs in this album to be beautiful but i only just realized how significant this one is to the message of the song. It's easy to see and admire a bright, beautiful flower but we don't notice the rich but humble soil that allowed it to grow, this song is about the seeing the normally unseen mother that brings forth the best in her children

This song is making me cry so much because I just wish I had a good mother. My mother emotionally and physically abused me and my siblings our whole lives... seeing or hearing about people my age that have sweet and caring mothers always makes me sob.. I’ll never have that.

the whole album feels like a comforting blanket due to the music and the themes and just how much the singles helped me at seemingly exactly when I needed them in 2020.... this song though. still feels like that. but it hit me in a way that I didn't expect. and I'm literally sitting in my bed, sobbing. i don't think I tell my mother enough how much I love her and I'm going to fix that

I lost my great-aunt a few weeks back and I was numb for a long time. She wasn't just my great-aunt, she was a mom who lost her kids when they were all young. Even with that great loss she was a mom to my mom, my uncle and me and my siblings. She didn't take care of us like we were her nieces and nephews but like we were all her own kids. This helped my remember why i love her so much and i can face her funeral service next week with a smile because she is so loved and she loved us

I lost my mother when I was 13. I never felt something about death because of my autism. For me, it's just something that happens and this is it... Neither bad nor good. But this song made me realize what usual people think, about memories and all. I forgot my mother's voice since, and is this... horrible ? Or just... normal ? I don't know.

I go to college hundreds of miles away from my mom’s house and this came out right my first semester of in-person residential college. Needless to say this song hit me like a brick in the face. I remember being at my lowest point in my life seeing my mom cry, she was all I had and I was all she had. Now as I’m getting married and building my life I still remember how much she did for me and how I can never thank her enough for all she’s done. I don’t think I would have made it to see the best parts of life without my mom

Lyrics: I was born In a sudden embrace, i'm awake So I study the shape of your face You take what you're given "I only wanna do what's good for you" Then at once I'm checking the doors and my weight I can't keep my hands from my face I said, "Mom, I'm so sorry," She smiled and said, "Darling, I don't want you to worry cus I'm on your side for the rest of your life You'll never be alone, don't worry my child And now there's an empty room you outgrew, But I'm here for you Ooh" And I've known The feeling you've had when you're held The comfort of being unwell So something can cradle you Oh, I don't need it Oh, I won't grieve it "I'm on your side for the rest of your life You'll never be alone, don't worry my child And now there's an empty room you outgrew, But I'm here for you Ooh" I'll do right by you I only wanna do what's best for you "I'm on your side for the rest of your life You'll never be alone, don't worry my child And though there's an empty room you outgrew, I'll wait for you, Ooh" "I'm on your side for the rest of your life You'll never be alone, don't worry my child And now there's an empty room you outgrew, But i'm here for you Ooh"

Today is her birthday and I couldn't help but put this song on repeat, as this strongly resonates with what she meant to me. Had to come here this Mother’s Day 2022 Lost my mom in August of 2019 to cancer, I was only 14 years of age Since then, I’ve been missing her since. Life isn’t the same without her. Especially if you lose a family member as a teenager. Everyone knows that losing your mother at such a young age tends to hurt a lot and it will take almost forever to recover. Dear Mom, I still love you and miss you. Meet you heaven soon…❤️🕊

You don't even need to relate this to having a mom or mother figure to feel loved listening to this. The "mom" here could be anyone you want by your side for the rest of your life. I've noticed on multiple listens I see different people in my mind when the "mom" reassures me. It's amazing how just the chorus can make you feel much better when you're feeling down.
