Porter Cable Deluxe Dovetail Jig (4216 - Super Jig) // Setup & Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It's time to cut some dovetails with this handy dovetail jig! Join me as I show the setup process (of the jig and the router) for cutting through dovetails and share my review of the Porter-Cable Deluxe Dovetail Jig. The jig can be intimidating to set up the first time, but once you get through a couple of test joints it becomes much easier to set up. For me, this is going to be a great addition to the shop!

Yes! Absolutely get two routers. For dovetail work, fixed base routers actually work better than plunge routers. A “D” handle router with a trigger switch is the most convenient.

A great video. I bought the base jig in '85 - while home on leave from boot camp - but have not used it in about 15 years. I would like to find one for my 4212 it is an older unit and it too has the metalic knobs with steel knurl nuts x two on both sides where the templates lock down, possibly previous owner upgraded it who knows. I would like to add dust collection to the PC 4212 it is messy at the least, but it works.

The router used here (Bosch EVSPK 1617) has both 1/2” and 1/4” collets. The jig comes with 1/2” bits for use with the full size template as well as 1/4” bits for the miniature template. Most full size routers with 1/2” collets come with interchangeable 1/4” collets.

Thanks for sharing. Purchased this jig many years ago. I am still a little intimidated by it. You made it look really easy. Some fine tuning will do @10:51 what happens if some one changes that deep setting. Is that factory set or is there ways to set it back where it needs to be? Or can that be adjusted for the materials thickness? Hopefully I make sense. Thanks for your time

Thanks for such a nice comment! I felt the same way about this jig (intimidating), which is exactly why I had put together this video once I figured it out. As for the depth setting, mine was perfect from the factory, but given that the top is plastic, I did have to calibrate it over time as the top wore down just enough. I found that I calibrated in the wrong direction first, then it took a number of other adjustments to get it right.

Why are the porter cable ones used/needed? Wouldn’t they be the same size? • @MasonWoodshop

Thanks for watching and commenting! You absolutely could use Bosch bushings as long as they are exactly the same size. Each manufacturer could have very minor (hopefully no) differences which is why I used the Porter Cable bushings. Your comment made me think that even slight tolerance differences between brands might not actually be a big deal as you have to dial in the depth either way.

Great vid - Using the 23EVS with PC jig 4216. My question is, what is the height of the "depth step guide" for through dovetails? Out of the box it's .880" / 22.35mm. And does it matter what thickness of material one is using? Thanks. New to this joinnery.

  • @MasonWoodshop

    @MasonWoodshop

    3 жыл бұрын

That's a nice router! The height of the guide may be set correctly for you out of the box, although I did have to slightly adjust mine and I do find that the plastic top of the guide makes it nearly impossible to get perfect each time and mine is already a bit chewed up due to router bits rubbing on it. My workflow is to generally use the depth stop as a starting point, then using some scraps (same thickness as my primary material, and thickness consistency does matter), I gradually dial it in for the perfect fit (usually takes 2-3 attempts).

Just checked mine and for the full-size through dovetails, mine is around 11/16” from the top of the template to the guide. I’ve been working with various thickness material recently, so that might not be a helpful number for you. I really don’t like relying on the guide, so I’ll often adjust it for the project I’m working on through test cuts, then use it to set the bit after swapping with the tails bit. As far as setting the depth, the way the guy in this video does it (ignore the guide and setting to the workpiece) might be best: kzread.info/dash/bejne/e4WgsqtqaLTKo5s.html For your other question about the collet, I have found that I can’t put the bit in as far as I usually do. I’d usually mount all router bits to maybe 1/8” above the painted tip, but for the dovetail jig, I’ve found that I need to keep the bit significantly less deep (while still ensuring it’s held appropriately well).

Thanks for watching and leaving the comment! I've used the full-sized templates (and bits) for 1/2" material quite a few times with no issue - checking the manual, I see that it can be used for material as thin as 1/4" for through dovetails and 1/2" for half-blind dovetails. The bits and guide bushings are available separately (check for the part numbers in the manual), but you can also use non-Porter Cable branded bits (and bushings) as long as long as they are the example same size/dimensions (e.g. 7 degrees, 17/32", etc.). I would say that the Porter Cable bits and bushings are pretty good in quality.

Great question! It should work with any router that can take the Porter Cable style guide bushings and have the appropriate collet size for the bits being used (eg. 1/2”, 1/4”). Most routers either take those guide bushings natively, or in my case with the Bosch there was a relatively inexpensive adapter to take the bushings.

As long as the board you're cutting into doesn't take up the full width of the jig, you could but up a sacrificial board of the same width beside the last pin.

Is there any reason one can't set up two pins and tails at the same time in the jig? Seems it would make the work twice as fast.

  • @MasonWoodshop

Unfortunately that wouldn’t work due to the angled nature of the dovetail bits. For box joints, that would work in most cases but it could put a lot of pressure on the bit/router.

Good question, but I’d say no. If you happened across absolutely perfect alignment, that could work, but the workpiece is unlikely to register in the same way on the left. Even if you did the same for not tails and pins, it is a long shot for it to be perfect.

I have been using the Bosch 1617EVSPK, but I'd imagine that essentially any router that takes 1/2" (for full-sized) and 1/4" (for miniature) router bits would work with the jig. I wouldn't use it with a small trim router as it would be less powerful and the base plate might not be large enough.

I just bought one and found that the offset guides, both black and silver, are not square and true resulting in the pins and tails being offset in assembled height. Otherwise it's a really nice jjg. The pin offset needs to be set with a ruler or some other measuring device, not with the guides.

  • @MasonWoodshop

Thanks for sharing and confirming that I’m not the only one. I can never get them to be just perfect and I always thought it was because I didn’t align it absolutely perfectly with the vertical board. I’m generally close enough that a quick zip on the disc sander gets the box even, but I feel like it should be closer off the jig. Great call on tuning with a measuring device.

  • @geoffreystearns1690

@@MasonWoodshop Yes, the offset should be set at 1/2 inch for the larger templates and 1/4 inch for the miniature templates. I still haven't solved the problem of tearout when the edge pins get too narrow.

  • @MasonWoodshop

I’m not quite sure what you mean. The only type of dovetail this jig is capable of cutting both pieces at the same time is half blind dovetails. For through dovetails each piece needs be done separately.

@@MasonWoodshop I have used this jig for years and have always had very good results. What’s more, the router is mounted in a table which makes it safer - in my opinion. The jig will only cut through dovetails, but if blind dovetails are required it’s easy enough to add a face to the drawer front, say.
