The gallery of angels is witnessing human behavior playing out, while fully aware of the inevitable death. The mime (arrogant human) is chasing after a phantom (hopes/dreams) only to get caught up in hell (sinful behavior) along the way. This behavior continues, in a cycle, until the worm (death) arrives. Theme: Death conquers all. The song and video are a masterful display of artistry. Thank you for honoring our request, Ruben!

You can´t explain it better and get to the point. This fits in perfectly with the biblical passage. Romans 7:19 New International Version (NIV) 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do-this I keep on doing. We are really just a "cradle of filth".

For me, Portal in music is the same as H.P. Lovecraft in literature. It is a real horror art. Unsettling, surreal. It is beyond good and evil, as I see it.

They create such an ominous and undulating sound. The way the riffs slither and breath, the drums and bass pummeling and tribal, and the curator summoning the void.Like the lovecraft and 70s horror-vibe of the video.

For me, when I stumble on some new music and I find myself trying to process what just happened after a first listen as you did here, I tend to take that as a sign that I just heard something special and something I'm going to keep coming back to and will have a lot of layers to peel through and enjoy. That's how portal was for me. They just sucked me in and I wasn't a "fan" right away, but I just couldn't stop listening. Now, they are a permanent part of my music library.

It's based off the poem "The Conqueror Worm" by Edgar Allen Poe. Essentially it's a play about the fate of man, the audience being angels. Man falls to sin and hell has won, the worm then devouring the angels. "The play is the tragedy, 'Man,' / And its hero, the Conqueror Worm". Also Hereditary was one of the best horror films of the decade.

gotta see their live vids to really see what theyre about i once heard someone describe Portal as a band who take a primitive approach to their instruments, almost as if theyd never heard them played before and just sort if invented their own way of playing to create their own type of sound.

Musically, it reminds me of Celtic Frost. Visually at begotten. Only a lot darker. It depicts the inner of man, who pretends to be good but rots and stinks inwardly. A pit of evil and ruin.

Portal deliberately craft their music and images to be unsettling and strange. Their music and lyrics are meant to evoke the existential dread and horror of H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allen Poe's stranger stories.

Lo! ’t is a gala night Within the lonesome latter years! An angel throng, bewinged, bedight In veils, and drowned in tears, Sit in a theatre, to see A play of hopes and fears, While the orchestra breathes fitfully The music of the spheres. Mimes, in the form of God on high, Mutter and mumble low, And hither and thither fly- Mere puppets they, who come and go At bidding of vast formless things That shift the scenery to and fro, Flapping from out their Condor wings Invisible Wo! That motley drama-oh, be sure It shall not be forgot! With its Phantom chased for evermore By a crowd that seize it not, Through a circle that ever returneth in To the self-same spot, And much of Madness, and more of Sin, And Horror the soul of the plot. But see, amid the mimic rout, A crawling shape intrude! A blood-red thing that writhes from out The scenic solitude! It writhes!-it writhes!-with mortal pangs The mimes become its food, And seraphs sob at vermin fangs In human gore imbued. Out-out are the lights-out all! And, over each quivering form, The curtain, a funeral pall, Comes down with the rush of a storm, While the angels, all pallid and wan, Uprising, unveiling, affirm That the play is the tragedy, “Man,” And its hero, the Conqueror Worm.

Portal, while being one of the most unsettling, but also creative extreme metal bands have also brought back something that metal lacks today: fear, danger, artistic expression. There are thousand bands that may be musically better, play faster, more complex, but all have the same boring band videos and not that sense of existential horror and dread that is conveyed through the music and the music video. Not only that this shit is way scarier than other "brutal" Death Metal or Grindcore bands, but also way more artistic in a way. Some real thought went into the concept, it told a story and was still unsettling, eerie, but strangely beautiful at the same time. The only other music videos that make me feel a similar vibe are Ritual marks of Penitence from Aosoth and Ravenous Whore from Vallenfyre. Maybe Anaal Nathrakh's More of Fire and Blood as well, but that's already a bout it.

The "worst" part of this music is that it's really "easy listening" compared to most of the others Portal's songs. Even if Portal isn't one of my favorite bands, I think it's objectively one of the darkest, less accessible Metal Bands. All aspects of their music are done to be unsettling, unconventional, like their riffs, the drums, the lyrics, their live performances, etc... But actually, it's the best we can expect for a band which is inspired by Lovecraft. It's not my favorite bands that's inspired by him, but it's objectively the one that best transcribe the lovecraftian horror.

Being a fan of group for a long time, I think it is the most extreme group both in terms of musical composition and concept! it is for me a mixture of literature and philosophy that stands in the deepest darkness the most backward !!! So here is a really innovative and unequal group. at one time, we would have burned them !!! I never understood that we can melt them to the black metal scene. For me, this is ultra-dark death metal, not to mention blaspheme because in the universe of PORTAL, religion and the world of today do not exist because they are for me in a dimension far removed from a purely human understanding !! ! a world where the sun does not exist !!!
