Wheatley’s betrayal was honestly so sad. Before you get in the elevator pretty much all of his dialogue is about how he and chell can escape together. He really was planning on giving up his power and escape to the surface with chell. He was so selfless

Not to mention he was incredibly damaged by GLaDOS and was clearly having some issues. He just seemed surprisingly human. When he finally got the power to stand up for himself he went crazy with it. Ultimately, he just wanted to be free to be whatever he wanted. You can even see as the testing program starts torturing him near the end. He was never designed to handle that weight.

I didn't see it coming until I was in the elevator. When Wheatly started rambling on about how small you are, I figured out the message of the game. If you give anything the amount of power that GLADOS and Wheatly had, it will corrupt them. Before then, wheatly didn't fit into the story, but when he became corrupted, it all made sense because valve wanted to show that even a personality like Wheatly can be corrupted with that much power. Great storytelling

  • @justincarino9653

Wheatley was originally planned to be killed off for real early on and then there would be more personality cores to guide the player, but the play testers felt that there wasn't enough time to get emotionally attached to the new characters and they wanted more Wheatley. So Wheatley's role got expanded and he became the final villain.

See, I can sympathize with both Wheatley and Glados in that argument. Mostly Wheatley because he's lovable and actually remorseful when all is said and done and Glados is just a mean spirited person. When being told he's nothing more than a moron, you can't blame Wheatley for getting pissed. However, that moment when Glados says "You're the moron they built to make me an idiot!" ... well, I can't help but see why she turned on her makers.

Samster Clone They both were power hungry. Glados' need to test all the time comes from a need for control and the addiction the system gives whichever AI possesses it. Plus. Wheatley's little power trip comes from never being treated with respect and being super insecure about his lack of competence. Something most people relate to. Glados was mean for the sake of being mean.

The sad thing is, I really can't blame Wheatley for his going mad with power. And not just because at least part of it was the mainframe's influence. So GLaDOS says the engineers tried "everything" to make her behave. I would imagine this means lots of different cores, each designed for a specific purpose, to affect her decisions and behavior in different ways. You got the Morality Core telling her what is and isn't acceptable behavior, the Curiosity Core continuously asking questions, etc. And then you have Wheatley. Poor, tiny little Wheatley the Intelligence Dampening Sphere. These constructs _are_ sentient. They have feelings, we know this. Well, we do already know Aperture is stupidly cruel enough to install empathy chips (with empathy suppressors) and the ability to feel simulated pain in their sentry turrets. They probably did that with their personality cores, too. Here's where I'm going with this: the _entire point_ of Wheatley's existence is _to be stupid._ That is his lot in life, that is what he's meant to do. No one expects anything else of him because that's all he's supposed to do. Now imagine how it must feel to know that _literally your only purpose_ is just to be an *idiot.* Who wouldn't jump at the chance to be something else?

Here’s the funny thing about Wheatley calling you “Tiny and insignificant” We’ve been shown very early on that Wheatley has a tendency to project his own feelings onto other people. Like when he says this just before you enter GLaDOS’s ruined chamber: “So. If you've got any reservations whatsoever about this plan, now would be a tremendous time to voice them… Riggght now. In case you thought to yourself, 'I've missed the window of time to voice my reservations.' Still open." Only to then follow that up with “Okay, I'm gonna lay my cards on the table: I don't wanna do it. I don't want to go in there. Don't... Don't go in there - She's off. She's off! Panic over! She's off. All fine! On we go." And later on when GLaDOS is being reactivated, he projects his own fear and panic onto Chell “Okay don't panic! Alright? Stop panicking! (Is the one panicking) I can still stop this. Ahh. Oh there's a password. It's fine. I'll just hack it. Not a problem... umm..." So when Wheatley says this: “Look how small you are down there! I can barely see you! Very tiny and insignificant.” It’s projection. He really means that about himself because only a few moments later, he follows that up with “I did this! *Tiny little Wheatley* did this.” He’s the one who sees HIMSELF as “tiny and insignificant” and that amount of power on someone with an inferiority complex and low self esteem who craves validation and to feel like he’s important is a recipe for disaster. What Wheatley needs is therapy. And no. I do not believe that Wheatley is actually a moron. He’s far too self aware and he does come up with clever ideas to help you (Coming up with the plan to disable GLaDOS’s defenses as well as figuring out the puzzle for the turret control center if you take too long to figure it out yourself). If anything, he’s as smart as the average person. FAR from being “the dumbest moron who ever lived” What I think is that Wheatley is very clearly mentally ill, insecure and emotionally unstable. I mean, if you were called stupid from the moment you were born and then treated unfairly due to nobody having any faith in you over a label or assigned purpose / social status that you had no say or control over, you would come out of it with some deeply rooted psychological issues as well. And then having the chassis amplify his neurosis and give him an addiction to the solution euphoria comparable to that of a cocaine addiction (as stated by the developers) only made things worse. Because now he’s engaging in the robot equivalent of substance abuse and elevated power/social status to cope with his inferiority complex. Chances are that Wheatley has never received any validation or recognition for anything good he’s ever done in his life. And when GLaDOS said that he didn’t do anything and that Chell did all the work, he got upset and immediately assumed that Chell agreed with her, prompting him to turn against Chell. Because he thought she was turning against him like seemingly everyone else who had ever doubted him.

Dear god, I am Wheatley. I remember when I became a teacher I went on a power trip. The power and status blinded me, only after I quit did I realize what I had done. If you never received much recognition or love growing up, if you were bullied and treated wrongly, or if you grew up with traumatic events (parents divorce, loss, etc.), you may be susceptible to going on a power trip, like me. It doesn't matter if you think you won't, because on days when you ever feel burnt out, stressed, or angry while at work, you may start rationalizing things you normally wouldn't do before. To be less susceptible to going on a power trip, take care of yourself, resolve any issues that are holding you back since childhood, learn more about yourself such as your positive traits and your own limits, set healthy boundaries with everyone, and most of all, forgive yourself for whatever hardships you had to face growing up, because it probably wasn't easy and you deserve some credit.

This sounds very... hypnotizing, controlling, oppressive, malicious. It almost gives the impression that GLaDOS chassis is a parasite that infects the minds implemented into it, like some sort of digital consciousness repository, and it sounds a bit like the concept implied in HL2 and it's episodes. Dr Breen's host body. And in a way, GLaDOS design was redesigned to look somewhat more ominous and combine-esque, carrying design traits similar to the Advisors.

@Patxi There is actually nothing wrong with it. It's just the fact that it controls the WHOLE facility. How would YOU feel being in control of a small number of things, and then an entire facility? Even the fricking walls are controlled by the one in the chassis.

Oh my god, I found another symbol in the core transfer. While GLaDOS' design is partly a bound and gagged women from mechanical parts and partly robot, when Wheatley gets her body, the parts that looked like she was bound and gagged were gone. He had no responsibility, no limits. And GLaDOS had them. She knew them pretty well too. Also, she remembered who he was when she was in a potato. Inside the potato she remembred everything she forgot, like Caroline.

Even without the dialogue I genuinely believe this is one of, if not the best song in the game, because if how it tells it's own story The song gleefully rises, in this playful manner, overjoyed, before settling down a little, the constant beeping, like a warning beep, before a change takes place, almost like the scattering of electrical signals, and the song goes down, and then comes to the evil realization, the music becoming darker, more calculating, still joyful, but of the realization that its powerful, the song talks with its violins, hearing a retort, striking back louder, the warning sounds indicating that something is going wrong, before it comes to another height, this time filled with rage, then almost immediately stopping, in, perhaps horror, or just plain realization. God this was such a great scene

Originally I thought Wheatley betraying you was dumb. It felt unearned to me, like there was no buildup. Then I realized that was intentional; they perfectly explain why Wheatley betrays you later on. He was designed to be an idiot. He was constructed to make the worst decisions possible. And betraying Chell, with the knowledge that she managed to defeat GLaDOS, with absolutely no reason to betray her, just before letting her go, is the dumbest thing he could have ever done. I literally cannot think of a worse decision for him to have made in his situation. Even nearly a decade after I first played it, Portal 2's writing continues to amaze me. Actually it's because the body makes you want to test. And since Chell was the only subject alive he had to keep her until he found the robots so he didn't need her anymore. Glados just lets you go in the end because she replaced you and doesn't need to kill you. The body makes you go totally bonkers.

There were actually hints before. Not that he was evil, mind you, but that he has the kind of personality that would have given in to ego and let power go to his head first thing. I've met people like this before in real life. Perfectly nice until they get power over people and it immediately reveals their worst parts. Wheatley already had an inferiority complex. He clearly wanted to feel like he was better than chell because she's a human. He never really expects Chell to be smart and thinks she's brain damaged. Honestly, in retrospect, he probably really wanted to believe chell was brain damaged and was likely a core reason he was so nice, because as much as he knew he was supposed to be a moron, he can't be more stupid than a brain damaged smelly human. And feeling like he can be superior probably made him want to be friends with Chell more. It's why he gets so upset when glados points out that Chell was the one who did everything. You put someone with that kind of canyon sized chip on their shoulder, they are going to turn evil real quick. As valid as people's interpretations are that the game was saying power corrupts, I think there's equal amounts of evidence here that evil will often reveal who a person really is. In Wheatley's case, his terrible insecurities about literally being designed to be a moron

it took me a long time to realize, but wheatley wasn't corrupted by the power specifically... he was just too much of a moron to realize we were truly helping him, he didn't think clearly about what we have done, and he only remembered anything harmful we done. he thought we were the bad guy.. he only remembered when we didn't catch him, scared him in the turret assembly line, and other things like that. he also remembered the times when he "sacrificed" himself, he risked his life twice by doing things that were said to kill him, he did them anyway though. but he never really though about us sacrificing, when in reality, we sacrificed the most. and funnily enough, wheatley was only punching glados into the pit, he specifically threw glados into the elevator and only targeted his screaming to glados, he didn't think about how he actually punched us into the pit too. why do i believe this? he specifically says "would a moron, punch, YOU, into, this, PIT?!" he was talking to glados before he got mad (more like pretending to ignore her) but he wasn't screaming at us, this is even further proven by the "uh oh" right afterwards.
