A simple monkey could do it if we could afford them.] so I made this test. And some of the attempts were funny. My favorite one is when of the test subjects was so close to finishing it but then the cube came towards him and hit him on the head. "Please nobody make a puzzle with this." Well, as a map maker, it's still worth knowing this bug exists/how it's set up, that way levels can be designed to avoid letting players perform this action. ... Also, hullo from the year 2020! There's a map maker for portal 2???
@bengregg2632
3 жыл бұрын
@@siddharthbhatia8815 Admittedly I was referring to people who make custom levels for Portal 2 (there are still people who build and release maps on the P2 workshop to this day), but yes, there are tools that allow you to make maps for Portal 2 (as a matter of fact, there's TWO map making applications for P2): 1. The in-game "Perpetual Testing Initiative" level creator (shown in this video) - It's a very simple map making tool that anyone can use to build a test chamber in under 30 minutes, but doesn't allow you to do complicated stuff like cutscenes, custom lighting, custom environment theme, etc. 2. The Hammer Editor (not show in the video) - The level creator/editor used by Valve to create Portal 2 (and various other Source engine games). It's much more complex, and takes a lot of time to learn, but allows you to make pretty much anything you want (I use it a lot since it gives you much more flexibility than the in-game PeTI level maker).
@Buglin_Burger7878
3 жыл бұрын
It is also worth noting for bonus challenges or extremely meta maps. As a community grows in a stage builder the difficulty and tricks ramp up. For example navigating a cube to the point where you can preform this to get a cube to the button is the puzzle. This is a new relatively simple to do trick... which means it can be used to add things to the game or create interesting solutions and via use of an orb it would be possible to pull it to you... let go... place a portal up high and in the hole it roles too to get it to a button normally otherwise impossible to get it to. This is like wave dashing in Celeste, it can become part of the game if you keep escalating challenges.
@wheedler
3 жыл бұрын
Why do you want to avoid letting players perform this action?
@bengregg2632
3 жыл бұрын
@@wheedler Well, if you spend a lot of time designing a well-crafted puzzle, you really don't want players to utilise exploits to solve/bypass it. It feels cheap - especially if the puzzle wasn't designed with the exploit in mind - plus it can be detrimental to the player's experience if the puzzle was designed to teach something vital about how the puzzle mechanics work (only for players to skip it because of a simple physics exploit). The only time you'd really want to let players perform this action during a puzzle - if you were taking level design seriously - is if the exploit can be used to skip part of the puzzle (but not solve the whole thing) OR if the puzzle is deliberately designed to ONLY be solvable through exploits/bugs (something which occasionally crops up on the Portal 2 Workshop).
@fireyblackdragon3 жыл бұрын
I did notice on my initial playthrough that Portal 2 lets you carry things from VERY far away. Really the only limitation is how far the "Use" traceline goes. So if you know how to tell the console to use an infinitely long trace, you can pick up stuff from across the maps without cheats enabled.

Edit: This may be wrong. Mr0 has an alternate explanation in a reply below. The reason this glitch happens is because in order to have the cube appear appear in two places when it is halfway through a portal, you need to have an original and a copy. These need to be proper physics objects in order to collide with things, and the game needs to update the other cube whenever the position or another one of the cube's properties changes. The glitch happens because those two copies of the same object are colliding with each other. The way to fix this is to make an exception so that copies of the same object can't collide with themselves, in the same way that there is an exception that allows objects to go into walls if there is a portal on the wall. Edit: watch the youtube videos on my channel if you are into investing.

Are you sure it has nothing to do with the direction the cube is entering into the portal in relation to the player holding the cube? I would bet if he walked straight into the portal with the cube in front of the player it would probably work just fine. Unless I am wrong about this, I believe this is actually a glitch with how the grabbing mechanic in source games work. When the cube enters the portal it can do it as it should, but as it goes almost entirely through the portal and begins to come out of the other portal, the players "grabbing force" is completely glitched out because it is trying to hold its position with the player, but it is also conflicting with the motion through its portal
@owendavies8227

When you take an object that is on the other side of the portal, the game deactivates the distance limit necessary to take that object, so no matter how far you go you will not drop that object, you don't need a corner, and the portals don't even need to be close to each other I guess the bug would be fixed if the game calculated the distance of the object to the portal, plus your distance to the other portal, to know if you are close enough to continue taking that object, instead of pulling it towards you from both portals

“ hey cave Johnson here. This test is to see how objects would react when we try to grab it between a corner of 2 portals. One of my employees challenged me to make a test that would count as a paradox. So I said [you think I can’t do that? I am the smartest person that would surpass black messa. A simple monkey could do it if we could afford them.] so I made this test. And some of the attempts were funny. My favorite one is when of the test subjects was so close to finishing it but then the cube came towards him and hit him on the head. Luckily the portal making device is still intact although it needed to be cleaned since he got blood on it. What an ungrateful test subject. This is cave Johnson, we’re done here”

Well, as a map maker, it's still worth knowing this bug exists/how it's set up, that way levels can be designed to avoid letting players perform this action. ... Also, hullo from the year 2020! There's a map maker for portal 2???
@bengregg2632

@wheedler

Why do you want to avoid letting players perform this action?
@bengregg2632
I did notice on my initial playthrough that Portal 2 lets you carry things from VERY far away. Really the only limitation is how far the "Use" traceline goes. So if you know how to tell the console to use an infinitely long trace, you can pick up stuff from across the maps without cheats enabled.

KZread: Let’s recommend this to people in 4 years!

@owendavies8227
3 жыл бұрын
@@mr0o no, you can put things through walls perpendicuarly in normal gameplay and that does not happen. The glitch only happens when the portals are in that position.

It seems this video was also stuck between two portals because it’s only just made it’s way into my recommendations
I remember finding this issue in one of my custom maps after I had already uploaded it and it reach the top maps of the week, so I couldn't pull it to fix it. There's another issue where water kill triggers extend half a block into adjacent voxels, so don't put rooms diagonally adjacent to water!

KZread recommendations aren't about "why?", they're about "why not?"
0:45 Nyoooooooooom~
There was something like this in the campaign. When you went to the turret cloning thing, you could just portal one side of the door, then portal the corner of it and the portal would appear on the other side of the door, skipping that segment completely.
I think this is happening because the game tries to grab the cube through the portal but since the cube entered the other portal it is technically in the wall so the game wont let you take stuff through the wall
I love the way you jump like in a dream
The cube is colliding with a non-existent cube meaning a tearing space time is causing it to become transparent making it technically A GHOST
today i learned something new about this game, thank you
There are two cubes, one in orange portal, one in blue portal, because they're so close together the input can't move so the output stops moving, even the glitches are thinking with portals.
You could probably yeet it into the air then stand on the button and wait for it to land and splash to you
since the box is going through the portal another box is spawned on the other side, and assuming valve didnt change the box collision mesh the box collides with it self probably?
could be used to simplify mob grinders
I haven't played Portal so this looks perfectly normal to me, unless the box is not supposed to go through the barrier
It seems to me like you've successfully divided to zero 😂
When you take an object that is on the other side of the portal, the game deactivates the distance limit necessary to take that object, so no matter how far you go you will not drop that object, you don't need a corner, and the portals don't even need to be close to each other I guess the bug would be fixed if the game calculated the distance of the object to the portal, plus your distance to the other portal, to know if you are close enough to continue taking that object, instead of pulling it towards you from both portals
I feel like watching this glitch happen my brain started a new neural pathway
