    The binaural recordings gave amazing spacial detail with headphones. I could hear the size of the room in a way that you can't with the stereo recording. I personally prefer that sound but both provide a similar experience in determining the quality of the product.

    First off, thank you for the effort you go to to setup 2 mic setups and provide quality perspective. Indoor Listening on my Bluetooth HESH 3's the Binaural provided a more mellow tone with a flatter response whereas the stereo mic you recorded with emphasized the mids and highs a lot more.. A suggestion would be to add the direct recordings of the songs you used in order for us over youtube to get a frame of reference of what the audio track sounds like directly to allow comparison to the 2 recordings coming from the device you are testing. Outdoor testing the Binaural I think allowed us to see the limitations of speakers that rely on reflection of sound whereas the stereo mic managed to pull in a lot more of the frequency... I'll chalk that up to the mic being pointed directly at the speaker and the binaural acting like ears and not being directed at the device playing the sound. All in all... Looking forward to the next test.

    absolutely love the videos! so much insight and thought going into these, believe me its appreciated! i got a better sense for the sound in the stereo mode, but the binural recording has me so interested that im busting out my headphones and seeing what i think of the difference. I use a Denon AVR-1804 powering 2 pairs or B&W 600S bookshelfs, a Jamo 3 way center channel, its 2 4" drivers have milled phase plugs and a def tech 10" powered sub. Ive actually been strongly considering building a pair of cabinets to properly fill the space i have for speakers. The 2 paif or B&Ws do very well, but i cant help but think that a mohogany custom box with 3 6.5"s and 3 1.5 tweeters would just sound better.

    I've got some old JVC HA-M5X headphones that have served me very well over the years. In my case, the binural is by far the more pleasing listening experience. I find the Binural recording cleaner sounding, if a little undefined in the mids. Listening to the stereo recording through the headphones bring the mid range out a LOT, to the point I'm hearing clearly things that were almost indistinguishable with the Binural recording. However overall the stereo recording just sounds muddy in comparison. Like the bass and mid is over-saturating any overtone.

    Thanks for the thorough review! I'm wondering if doing the frequency response test via 3.5mm analog cable instead of Bluetooth might not represent the speaker in its best light. This is because the analog source needs to be converted back to digital (within the speaker) in order for DSP to be applied, and then back to analog again for the amplifier. Bluetooth is already in the digital domain, which can be directly utilized by DSP, thus saving one unnecessary AD conversion which in turn might provide better test results. It would be interesting to compare the frequency response of both. Anyway, very professional review, keep it up!

My Bluetooth speaker stopped working earlier this near, and I've become very interested in sound recently while researching a new one to purchase. At what volume level did you do the frequency response graphs? Will speakers with all drivers facing forward generally always have an advantage indoors, where they can be placed on a corner/wall to fill the room better? Omni, opposite facing drivers for when it will be a gathering of people in open space outdoors or a large room?

    most people building bass speakers are designing for huge sound output. i'd be interested in your ideas for building much smaller enclosures to get deep bass when high output isn't important, and for designs that control excursion better than a box with a port/radiator. and what do you think about compressing just the bass frequencies?

  • @RennieAsh

    @RennieAsh

    4 жыл бұрын

    Use dsp and cut bass frequencies hard at the point where going lower = too much excursion. A lot of passive bass boosts seem to increase group delay, though you can use something like a band pass box to get more efficiency in a certain frequency range. You’d need another driver for mid/high however

  • @5naxalotl

    @5naxalotl

    you're missing my point, that some enclosures inherently have less excursion, most importantly on transients, and need less bass cut to minimize excursion. most people can't hear group delay

    oh very nice providing both recordings. makes for an interesting comparison. i found the stereo recording clearer. the binaural is a bit like the sennheiser veil, which feels to me like always having a blanket hanging in between me and the performer. overall, i found the sound signature pleasant and balanced but with the typical boomy bass that seems to be very popular in smaller portable systems. i used hifiman he4xx as is my flattest headphone and the tin t2 for binaural, and for stereo my speaker system (flat to 30 with a rolloff staring around 800hz ending around -6db at 8k).

    Listened with KZ ZSR's. The stereo recording has a huge hole in the middle of the image when inside but this effect disappeared in the outdoor recordings. I think the binaural worked better above about 350HZ. Below that the stereo recording sounded better and seemed to track the location of the speaker better. No idea why that would be though unless there is mechanical vibration coupled between the sides of the binaural mic in the lower frequencies. Of course this tiny speaker is not going to image at all because it is just too small, but it is amazing how well the sound holds up to moving and rotating the speaker. I have much more expensive Bluetooth speakers (HK Onyx 3) and they do not sound good from behind at all. Sometimes I set them up back to back because of this. I would have liked to see a Bluetooth range measurement. My HK's can get about 80 to 100' if line of sight is preserved. That last 20' needs there to also be only a few 2.4GHZ WiFi access points in range.

    Binaural sound great on iems (Tin T3, dt 1990 ish sound signsture), stereo sound better on speaker / headphone, is this because of the shape of those binaural ears? Knowing that those speaker are so tiny, i kept my expectation low, after seeing the graph and hearing the sound, those things sounds pretty good for a portable, especially those bass extension tho, eventhough there are none of sub bass i'll gladly throw 60$ at them for some casual and on the move listening session

  • @carlos2004

    @carlos2004

    4 жыл бұрын

    yes, since iem's don't make use of the pinna (what we usually call the ear and sometimes makes people look like dumbo), the binaural recordings will sound best on them as the the simulated head will recreate the positional cues our brain normally uses, which is time delay and the difference in the tone. if the fake head/ears are not used, it basically just becomes a stereo recording which is best played on speakers and then the coloration of the tone and time differences will just be done by your own head pinna. also, software can also be used to add the binaural effect to stereo sources if using headphones on pc or phones, which basically try to recreate the coloration and time delays. check out the explanation on rtings.com about their soundstage testing methodology. since with speakers both your ears are picking up the sound from both the left and right channels, while with iem/headphones this effect does not happen, this is also the reason why with headphones, it always feels like you ARE the mic, yet speakers give a real sense of depth and it feels like the singer and their mic is a few feet in front of you.

    Just a tip for everyone. Listening to binaural recordings is best with ear buds. Watch a few vids with binaural recording of more than just music, with over ear, and in ear headphones. You will understand.

    Perceived sound has such a limited vocabulary, but I'll give it a shot. The binaural mic let me hear the room. The stereo mic let me hear the speaker. Others have already noted the discrepancies between the two, sounding tinny or bloated. Suffice it to say I really prefer the binaural experience, even though the tascam does just fine.

    the audio isnt all so good from that mic it seems to be missing a good deal of fullness, i dont know but its missing full clear sound, on my system it sounds like i'm listening to something from inside a PVC pipe lol maybe youtube just dont do it justice

    I've had that speaker running for like 15min and send it back afterwards. Horrible sound imho. The bass was indeed great, but everything else wasn't appealing for me. Sadly.

    I don't care about size. If it doesn't have a flat line from 20hz-20khz on a spectrum analyzer, I'm not interested.

    No, I'm tired of tiny single motor audio. Im talking about multiple component audio systems that when tuned properly have a true flat response at db levels high enough to perforate your tympanic membranes.

    For those moments in war movies when the actors are firing a howitzer, i want to feel like my lungs are collapsing. The windows in the house should crack when someone pulls the emergency brake on train in a scene. Maybe i just want to feel Biggie's words hypnotize me.
