Portable home delivered as furniture, tailored as smartphone

Architect Camino Alonso wanted to create a small, portable, prefab homes, but she didn't want it to feel like a shipping container. Camino, along with her husband and siblings (also architects at their firm Ábaton), created ÁPH80, a tiny home that ships like furniture, but has the style and usability of a smartphone.
Their Casa Transportable ("Transportable House") is manufactured in 6 weeks in a CNC factory in Northern Spain. Their largest model (9 by 3 meters) is still small enough to fit on the back of a truck. The height of 3.5 meters allows for a gabled roof to give it the feel of a real house, but it's just low enough to fit under bridges and tunnels while on the road.
Once the house arrives at the site, like a shipping container, it is craned into place in as little as 20 minutes. When Ábaton installed their prototype house on an empty plot in a residential neighborhood on the outskirts of Madrid, they had dug a few small holes in preparation for the "foundation footings": in this case, recycled wood blocks left over from other construction projects, but cement or a nice rock work as foundation as well.
Ábaton provides instructions and sketches so any crane operator can put the home in place. The home arrives fully plumbed and wired. Their prototype home is the "apartment" with kitchen/living room, bathroom (with full shower) and bedroom (bed included), but they offer other models for those looking interested in simply placing an extra bedroom in their backyard (they offer several combinations e.g. a bedroom/bathroom, 2 bedrooms, living room/kitchen, bedroom/living room).
CNC-milled grey cement-board panels lock together to provide not only a sleek exterior but a ventilated facade. This layered exterior along with 10 centimeters of insulation means the home is thermally efficient - useful for off-grid purposes, but it also means that even without AC on a very hot day in Madrid, the inside of the space stayed cool.

Truly one of the most architecturally clever, economically sensible and functional tiny homes I've seen (lack of utilities aside). In the end, everyone will have their personal opinions on virtually everything you do, but they seem happy with it and that's the bottom line that we're all reaching for anyway.

In general I like the idea - but have a few comments: 1) Never a good idea to have edges exposed to the weather, even if it is a protected substrate. For example why not have the roof overtop the end panels. 2) This material on the roof is probably not conducive to rainwater collection, which I think would be important in remote areas. 3) The video does not address waste water - is there a holding tank?

We lived in trailers and even a railroad boxcar as kids. Poverty makes the memories hard, but it's fun to see the updated version of a small space done with more joy. I worry about fire coming across that dry grass and up under the structure. Perhaps you're planning to create a defensible area around the house and green it up a bit. Take care and enjoy your new place. I love it.

Here we have manufactured homes. Sometimes they go on a permanent foundation. Sometimes I see them on cement blocks. I would feel better w/ one of those 2 options, as termites or carpenter ants would go right through the wood blocks into the house. Cement blocks would not rot either. I suppose it could be moved to cement foundation later.

This is incredible! The few questions I immediately have is: 1) how much does this cost? 2) can it be installed with a portable battery? (preferably hydrofuel) 3) Where exactly does this flush to? I reckon that there should be a separate compartment, that you can empty out or use for a compost. (seems really fitting with the countryside lifestyle) 4) These two massive boards that cover the front door... why don't they open up? It would be a great way to create a veranda! Or perhaps they can open down to create a floor, and then have a plastic cover that comes out. I really think that not using the front panels for some sort of veranda is a bit of a waste. 5) Can this survive heavy winds or a tornado? Perhaps with extra strong foundation? 6) Also, does it have a (gas) heater? It has hot water, so I assume it should also have a heater This is incredible though! If this costs under 20 000 (preferably 10 000) then it's perfect for absolutely anyone :)

Anytime you try to "skirt" zoning regulations by "comparing" an installation of a pool to a home, you are playing with fire. All it takes is ONE building inspector from the city or municipality you are "living" in to simply say: "You have permission to build a pool. You do not have permission to 'install' a home. Either remove this within 30 days or we will hire a bulldozer at YOUR expense to remove it." These ridiculous comments about "the pads" being the same as the pool are exactly that, ridiculous. One of the major problems with finding affordable housing in many "expensive" areas is that the locals do NOT want portable structures near them because they tend to lower property values. All it takes is one complaint and you're investment in this structure is nil, because you have no place to put it. sanjosemike

I have built similar structures in the US and it is better to use concrete monolithic pour because wood will rot and shift. Speaking from years of experience with structures that require a similar foundation it pays to put a concrete monolithic pour. This can be leveled again and straightened by adding another concrete pad, but the wood will rot and then it has to be completely removed and another one added. Over time this will become more costly than using a monolithic pour.

This is among my favorites of the tiny houses. The inside is VERY nice and the way the rooms are organised is great. Still, I can't imagine more than one person living in 290 sq ft. The prices are high because this is in Europe and things here are a lot more expensive, especially any kind of housing. It comes move in ready and all you have to do is put it on a foundation and hook it up to the electric and sewer. I would be nice if it came air conditioned because it gets very hot in Spain in the summers!

Yaroslav Larkin actually it doesn't collect rain water, she said water just runs right off because there are no gutters. but hell its 290 sq. ft. for around $60,000 dollars? you could buy a 4 bed 2 bath 2000 sq. ft. mobile or manufactured for the same amount. and go back and look at it in 1 year those composite cement boards will be all split and swollen. don't get me wrong it think change is good and new thinking is a great thing but they didn't reinvent the wheel here. all they did was the same thing a thousand other people did with some aesthetic changes. and he likes to falsely point out that carpenters and contractors can only be as precise as centimeters and his is precise to mm's. but yet they had to leave all the panels and cabinets and counters a 1/4 inch away from everything so nothing broke. well a carpenter wouldn't need to so you wouldn't get water down the wall behind your sinks and cabinets were it gonna cause damage. and if every thing is so perfect down to the mm why is it they couldn't measure the damn footings straight ? oh yea must have forgot to bring a CNC machine for that lol.

The City Hall of Madrid would love to make a visit to this hipster house... need foundation? need permit!! even if you place a mobile house on wheels, here they ask for permits because in the end you'll use it as a static house (an "inmueble") and you will need plumbing, septic system, electric service... "connected" to the ground. People often ask for a small permits just in case local police pass by so they can see that they are making "something legal" but the main reason is that a permit for a pool is incredibly cheaper than a permit for a house ¬¬ The building codes can change from one city to another, but saying something like "I don't need a permit because this is something new" is just bullshit. You are not parking a hippy van. You are not building a pool. For me these people are just snobs trying to make money selling expensive sardine houses with fake permitless arguments... and here in Spain, this sentence is very common: "in the end, the cheap becomes expensive"

+Kevin Nguyen. Hi Mr Kevin, before anything, thanks for your detailed comment. Since you seem to be so poorly informed about building codes in Spain I'll be glad to inform you so you can go to bed happier having learnt something new on this beautiful day. These people, Kevin, are bad. Very bad. They want your money, Kevin. Here there aren't any houses that "count as a pool". You need permits for a house since it's a (tiny) HOUSE. Don't let them trick you Mr. Kevin! You can plug-and-play-it next to a pool, in a back yard, or even in front of the school where you should get a better education, but if you do what they are saying, Kevin, you will be exposed to pay some thousands of euros for a illegal building fine. In fact, if you put this concrete coffin on your land and then you try to sell it, you will be officially selling a land with just a pool. Remember, my friend Kevin, sometimes fucking haters are less likely to be fooled like an idiot.

It's clear that a lot of effort and thought has been put into this place, and I like the concept in theory, but I have to say that I really don't like the result at all. The impression that I got was that it shouldn't detract from its surroundings, but the overall effect seems to be like a smudge in a dusty field. Still it was a very interesting video. Thanks.

Alexandra Stratan They needed a permit to build. As the building policy in the region has not caught up with these modern types of buildings, the closest permit (apparently) is the swimming pool permit. I.e. the permit is not for a swimming pool. They have gotten a swimming pool permit in order to be allowed to build this tiny house.

What a ridiculous 'foundation' with those stacked pieces of wood. There should have been a poured concrete pad or platforms all pre-leveled and stabilized. That would still avoid 'permanence' but would achieve stability and safety.

Portable means - you can move it from one place to another...Delivered like furniture - it means you order and you get it delivered the same way a piece of furniture is delivered to your home - on the truck...Tailored as a smart phone - you decide what you want and how to function so you tell the company and they make it as per your needs...Also the look is modern and sleek - so they compare to a smart phone...

Love this... Such beautiful design, and simplistic concept (but far from simple!)... The use of concrete is visionary also, especially in that area of Spain, as perfect, no, more perfect than tile and marble for its thermal properties. Although small, I'd say it was size of my flat (if you minus the room I don't use) but the linear layout makes it appear more functional...and a very adaptable shape/size ie could insert a loft for more sleeping/mini snuggle cool loft. Stunning workmanship, absolutely stunning, the attention to detail and eye for lines is spectacular. If I lived in a warm country, I'd have this.... Day I move to my piece of land on santorini, the "new build" comes down, and I'll ship me this, heh!! fabulous x

John Adams I often applaud tiny homes under 300 SF as well as sustainable and modest designs for the many of us who now can't afford large homes. Before you defend these nice people which they probably are, do your research on the lavish fixtures and unsustainable products they used to create an uninspiring structure which contradicts affordable housing. If I have the right to praise what I feel is quality design work, I should also have the right to creatively express my dislike on rare occasions. You fail miserably with me in proving any point by calling me names. FYI I've lived in mobile homes and I've also designed and built my own custom home which both serve a purpose.

Glenn McGee "If I have the right to praise what I feel is quality design work, I should also have the right to creatively express my dislike on rare occasions" What does refering to trailor parks have to do with "creatively expressing your dislike" for this house's design or structure?

If I compared this project's aesthetic qualities to the Taj Mahal would you have an issue? Like listening, reading is a skill and I've gone on record that I've lived in mobile homes which doesn't mean I'm besmirching those who live in them or trailor parks. But I was wrong with my analogy and the more I review the appearance of this structure it reminds me of an industrial grade chicken coop. Please feel free to defend the reputation of all the chickens who reside in them. If you care to debate why you like this project by all means articulate your opinion and understand someone else may not agree with you.

  • @sue2611

Berelore -- I was wondering about that too. To add to that, my claustrophobia would have me worrying that someone would close me in while I'm sleeping. I would want locks to hold them open. Actually, if they could be made to slide on tracks and be operational from inside, you could secure yourself in at night. Even with that, I would need an escape hatch. Hmm... Let's take this a step further. Set the house so it's facing east or west. Have the same wall of windows and glass doors on the front and back. In the morning, open the panels on both sides and watch the sunrise. When the sun gets too bright from the east, close the east panels. When the sun moves around to the west, close the west panels and open the east. Of course, be sure to open the west panels in time to watch the sunset. ...Yes, I think way too much about this stuff. And yes, I know draperies would create the same effect, but it wouldn't be nearly as dramatic.
