Portable Grill Challenge - Coleman Roadtrip v.s Weber Q1200

What's a good camping trip without some good grilled food? Right?! Well we love to eat and we especially love to grill; so when it came time to pick which grill to take with us on the road, selecting the right one was a "hot" topic.
We started our RV journey with the Coleman Road Trip LXE Portable 2 burner Propane Grill - 20,00 BTU but during a recent shopping trip we purchased the Weber Q 1200 LP Gas Grill. Since we have owned and cooked on both grills we wanted to share our pro's and con's list for each, along with making the above comparison video because one maybe better for you... thanks Jim, diggin the OGrill youtube vids but haven't tried one yet. Our friends at Freedom Theory did a review on Road Gear Reviews which got us thinking about it as an option. We still love the Weber (mainly the disposable drip trays we can buy anywhere, high dome and light (we didn't show in our video but the optional night light rocks, open grill light turns on... close it turns off.. yes!!!). So many good choices out there, i think these are two of the front runerss and OGrill wins out if you need ultra portable with matched performance. Keep us posted on how it works for you over time. those coleman roadtrip grills are $350 up here in vancouver! but i got one on craigslist for $75 the weber here is $280 at home depot and dont buy those trays on amazon!! or home depot!!! they're a rip off you can get tinfoil trays like that at the dollarstore, usually 2 or 3 for $1 too and all you would have to do is line the coleman drip tray and under the grills with tin foil and it would be super easy to clean

Awww Michael that sucks. Our lasted for a while but we agree, a hollow wheel that can crack the housing with a light him from the side seems like a rookie mistake for a company who has been building grills that my father had in boy scouts.. Anyway, hopefully they shape up. One thing we can say though, if you call Coleman, they will send you just about anything including a replacement grill with very little fuss, they just want you to send them a picture with the old grill with sharpie written on it saying "DEAD" or something that proves you didn't try to resell or return it. Not a bad company.. but the quality of the little things needs a look at in our opinion (grill itself held up very well after 18 months of heavy use, outdoor life, rain etc. In over 12 months it never failed to light with the igniter which we were surprised to see..)

LivinLite.net I had the Weber Q, can't remember version for like 8-10years. But been without a grill for like a year or so. So I purchased this Coleman and right out of the box, I feel like I made a mistake. Yes it's a cheaper price point which I was hoping I can get by with. But the lid feels flimsy and the side trays and that back set up feels awkward like something is gonna snap. And I just got it. I just remember the Weber being so much more solid. Your thoughts please. Because I just purchased some Coleman assessories off of Amazon too like a full size flat plate and a cover. So I'm torn whether to send those back and go get my Weber. I also know it may take some time but I did cook on it once. It does get hot and I guess you should cook on a lower setting so as not to burn your stuff.

Good video. I think you should have mentioned that the Coleman is manufactured in China. The Weber Q series is manufactured in Huntley, Illinios. The high end Genesis and Summit are manufactured in Palatine; the lower end full size Weber grills are made in China. It's not just an issue of quality but of being made in the USA that creates the higher cost for a Weber Q grill.

We also got a 22 inch Blackstone griddle for Christmas and between the two, we are good to go! I really enjoy outdoor cooking and these two products fill our needs while full time on the road! Heck, I sold grills for over 20 years and never sold a Weber. Wish we had now, as I have been very happy with this grill. Nice video Erik on the difference and I would agree with all that you stated. We have the Colman Raodtrip since they first came out and there is absolutely NO SLOW COOKING with it. I've been able to indirectly cook a tri-tip on one side with the flame off and the other side with the flame on, but I had to cover the vents on the lid to aid in keeping heat in. But if you're like us and prefer rare/med-rare, it's perfect. A wonderful searing grill for sure. Having the flat griddle is a must, especially for cooking greasy things like chicken thighs with skin. Without the griddle, they're so close to the flame that whatever greasy thing you're cooking will flame up and become charcoal quickly. Our drip-tray actually melted on one such flame-up... I went in to get something for a minute, never turn your back on this thing! We purchased the storage bag that has wheels and it's great because our toy hauler no longer smells of decaying grill debris. But like yours, the wheels on ours are also all wonky and ready to fall off. I'm designing a fix for that and will blog about it.

I had both, I can definitely tell you that the Weber is the superior product but it's expensive. You get what you pay for here. The stand makes a huge difference in the Weber, as it becomes easy to transport. If you with value, then yes go with Coleman, but if you can bite the bullet, get the Weber with the Stand.

It seems that the Coleman can do double duty, serving as an outdoor camp stove (something Coleman has always done well) as well as a grill. Looks great for making pancakes and bacon in the morning. Later that evening grill some chicken or steaks. I’d think about lining it with aluminum foil to keep the inside clean.

I bought a Coleman thermostat for $10 and drilled a hole right above the handle. with the Weber you would have to spend an additional $70 I'm just a stand and not to mention that the parts they sell are way overpriced. The Weber is also great but highly overpriced. Love both of them just giving you an honest review from someone who has them.

Just bought the Weber, saw both at Camping World and we're not full timers, just my wife and I on week long or weekend trips mostly. The one thing I would say of why I chose the Weber is because of the construction and durability, found several posts where people have had the compact Webers for 10 or more years and they're still working to this day. I found when looking at the Coleman, the construction of the grills materials was substandard, don't really feel like buying a new one every few years because the old one is burnt through the thinner cheaper metal. Cooking quick normally is not a good thing, most smaller grills have an issue with this problem and will constantly flare up when cooking a large amount of food, several of the reviews I read said that they had minimal flare up on the Weber and just looking at the Coleman I could tell that it would get hot. I figure also that you can buy a whole lot cheaper grills if quality and consistent cooking temperature and lack of flare ups were not an issue, plenty of cheap grills that you can buy that will serve similar to the thin metal Coleman but lower in price than it by far. Portability was important and the stand would make it difficult to store in the compartments in my rv seeing I am in a Travel Trailer. I also did like the fact that I was supporting American workers buying this product and am familiar with Weber quality. When it comes to grilling outdoors, Weber has always been the brand to trust. I am looking forward to having and using my new grill for the next 10 plus years and I hope you do as well.

I have had the Weber Q1200 for almost 10 years. I bake bread in it, do cottage pies, and macaroni & cheese, use it as a smoker, bake the best pizzas, and do whole large chicken or leg of lamb - too many dishes to mention. The indirect heat facility makes all the difference. And of course, you can do burgers, steak, chops, pork, fish, and whatever you can do on a fire, you can do on this all-rounder. Fair enough, we have accessories to facilitate the variety, but once you have it, it is a lifetime investment. Buy the Weber Bible and see for yourself.

Weber all the way! Hack it out of the box (no one pounders). Simple, 1) Remove regulator. 2) Put a quick change where the reg was. 3) Get a quick change hose to connect right off your RV rig. Screw the one pound cylinders! Always one regulator in line, never more than one. Weber should have this as an option. Note: Be sure to use gas rated tape, yellow, and check for leaks!

Your review was really helpful, but the one thing you didn't mention was the difference in burners. Weber grill is a typical tube-like burner, most propane grills have. The Coleman "grill" is really a Coleman "stove." With round burners you would find in any camping stove or gas stove. I vote for the Weber Q. Yes it is more money, but I am looking for a grill, and it is quality. Not looking for another version of a Coleman stove, which I have two of in my garage.

that is probably not a bad idea but you'll be probably swapping out the foil one a month. Honestly even though it wasnt the cleanest, we didnt clean ours all that much and even though it looked dirty it never effected performance of the grill. Then one a quarter we used grill cleaner on it and it was back in pretty good shape. Good luck and if you use the foil let us know how you make out!

Very thoughtful review. It is harder to get the temp down on the Weber but it can be done. I like the quality of the Weber more and I think it is much easier to clean. The grates are heavier than the the Coleman's grates and they are better. The Coleman grates can warp easier. I think you are both spot on. However, my choice would be to get the Weber for up to 1-4 people, OR the 2200 for a family of 5-8. I have both of them and have sold the Coleman because of the grate warping. Lastly, there are plenty of aftermarket parts for the simple Weber Grill.

My wife and I use the Webber 1200. We have not purchased a stand for it because we either sit it on a picnic table or use the folding table we always set up when we camp. We like the smaller size and have no problem cooking and eating with the kids and grandkids. We just feed the grandkids first and then cook for the adults. When it is just the two of us we can cook the burgers, grill the corn and toast the buns in a short time. The better quality construction was the deciding factor for us. Who wants a grill with a rolling stand if the wheels are going to fall off like in the video. WEBBER ALL THE WAY

I was never a fan of weber, until I bought a Q2200 with stand, I have the Coleman as well and I will never carry the Coleman again, too clunky and stand is hard to get down and up without snapping. The Weber cooks evenly, consistent, and the Weber fits better under our 5th wheel basement compartment, also Weber is easy to use different types of connectors and cables, but Coleman is popular just we love our Weber, even purchased the griddle and could not be happier.

Nice video. I am looking to get the Weber Q 1200. I have all three Weber Charcoal grills and am looking to get my first gas grill for grilling in the fall and winter for something quick. I have been impressed with Weber's quality and warranty service so I am ok with paying for that better experience.

Why would the longer hose cause the grill to shut off? The propane should still be high pressure coming through that hose, or did the 10 foot hose have a regulator built into it too? If that's the case then there might be a problem.

Great review! I'm looking for a small backyard gas grill to add to my Pit Barrel Cooker. My PBC does my "crowd cooking", but I wanted something quick, easy, and gas for quick night dinners for two. I've always trusted Weber because of their warranties and customer service. Would have liked to have seen a comparison on Coleman's warranty vs Weber's. Again, thanks much for the well-done comparison video and .... Happy Trails.

Thanks Sea, We haven't had experience with Weber from a warranty perspective (because we havent had any issues with our grill but we did need to replace a Coleman part one. They required we take pictures of the damage and then they promptly sent replacement parts. Very easy. The Coleman had a one year warranty. Hope this helps!

If you are mostly grilling for two to four people it's no contest. The Weber wins hands down. Just a whole lot better quality, durability, portability and uses your gas more efficiently. It's more expensive for a reason.

Just catching up on videos and seen this one. About 2 years ago I was in the market for a new portable grill. My Tailgate grill was over 15 years old and was used up. I checked out many types and went with the Q2200 with the "Portable Cart". I use it for many family outings and over 25 tailgating events in the last 2 years without any issue of size or weight. Yes it is a little bulky but is an awesome grill and build quality is much better than the Coleman Roadtrip (Which I have used also since tailgating we pair up with others quite abit) When I retire in 4 years, the plan is to take the Weber as the grill on the road in our RV BTW... Cornish Game hens are awesome on the Weber :)

I've had the Coleman for 13 years and am now finally replacing it. Mind you, it still works and cooks great but the moving parts(lid, lock, trays etc.) are getting worn and a bit loose. The red coating has faded but not rusted at all. I'll be getting another Roadtrip and hope it lasts as long.

I have the opportunity right now to buy either one of these grills new for $120 on Craigslist. I'm torn. I'm a Weber guy but 20,000 BTUs on the Coleman vs. 8500 BTUs on the Weber is a HUGE difference. Tailgating with it mostly at NCAA football games and I'm not a little guy so weight is no issue. Any thoughts?

Great video Erik and Kala! Love the grill challenge idea - it was fun as well as educational. Good balance of pros and cons. Very useful info for those on the fence between the two. We brought our Weber 200 with us from our townhome (ideal for that) in our RV but really it's bigger than we would want or need in our 36' motorhome. We may consider downsizing to the Weber q1200 and yes they do a great job of cooking a whole chicken! We love the aesthetics of the Weber and solid quality but yes paying more for it and the stand etc. My only question is... which one did you keep as we know you aren't carrying two grills!

Thanks so much guys. We would have never even considered the Weber if it wasn't for Marc's expert BBQ skills on that Q 200. He must have pumped out enough food for 15 people that day (and the next day, and the... lol)... Tell you what..When you are ready to get rid of that 200, we'll give you a few bucks towards your Q1200 for it as we'll set it up as a permanent fixture where we park the RV at home since we entertain a lot more there and don't need to worry about hauling it around! - Miss you guys! Most bbq video’s that are made on youtube is about using the Weber q. You should have done a steak on both to compare the grilling of the steaks and how the steaks taste. When it comes BBQ is mostly about on how well it grills and how well the food taste. Weber all the way and very easy to carry and clean.

  • @LivinliteNet1

    @LivinliteNet1

That would have been a great idea. Unfortunately we no longer have our Coleman, so we can't do a steak grilling challenge, but what I can say from experience with cooking steaks on both grills - the Coleman would get hotter and to a higher temperature quicker - I found my steaks on the Coleman would get a more "BBQ" outside. Cooking a steak on the Weber while it would take a little longer would still taste great. So in all they both tasted the same (to me anyway). So I would say once you get used to your cooking times and temperatures you can make a pretty delicious and similar tasting steak on both grills. In regards to the portability - agreed weber is easier in that regard.

Thank you for your video, but it is now outdated because the new Coleman actually has three burner controls. Although I agree with comments below that it is built in China instead of US. But my Weber doesn't have enough control on low end. I would like to be able to get lower heat on low setting. Yet it is too hot on low. Thank you, Paul

The Coleman with three burners is a larger model. It's not designed to replace the two burner.
