    I used 6ft steel bar. I got enough leverage and length that it only took a couple tries. All the shorter tools dis not work. And good that you bought the plastic parts. They are designed to be sacrificial. There are metal ones out there, but those will just break the top or clamshell in the event of an issue.

    Thanks! I had to change both and just want to say that you need to position both rods before you click one of them. Swing both rods forward before fastening them.

    Top tip for popping the ball joint on: Open the top all the way but leave the clamshell open, you suddenly have a shed load of access to that joint from directly above. Just need to ensure the push rod is generally in position before operating the roof!

    another great video. This was one of the first things I had to do to my Boxster after i got it 2 years ago.. getting that socket to snap onto the ball was a major pain in the butt.. i also had trouble threading the plastic piece back onto the end of the rod.. mine was really tight.. i had to clamp the rod into a vice, shove a deep well socket over it and turn it down with a ratchet. I marked my threads with a piece of blue masking tape, i didn't have a fancy paint marking pen. :D

    Top Tip: Once you have the plastic ball joint and metal ball aligned, you can squeeze them together with a pair of Tongue and Groove Pliers. (First, follow the "open clam shell" method mentioned above!!)

    Hello thanks for all your help. It would be nice to see a video on how to fix the calibrate the track because that’s what is breaking the balls in the first place. My track on the transmission side doesn’t raise and lower the transmission side of the metal convertible top evenly creating strain on the other side. I noticed the other end of that track is bent out at the bracket a bit. Also sometimes the left side doesn’t open far enough and then the convertible top gets stuck trying to raise up but being blocked by the metal top cover.

    A suggestion for shooting: I know that you are working in a very cramped space. Look into buying a borescope on Amazon. They're cheap, plug into your phone or laptop and have an adjustable light on the end haloing the camera. You can stuff it far back into the space you're working in, point it outward, and we can see your hands move toward the subject and all of the action. Highly recommended.

    The clam cover travels on a rail that’s mounted to wash side. Inside the rail there is a socket which the clam hinge has a ball that fits in the socket. Does anyone have or know the part number for it? Or a link to where I can buy it. Mine keeps popping out on the right side. Thanks

    Hi! Thanks for your excellent guides! One issue I'm running into: When I try and fit the second ball joints back on (the one connected to the shock like item), one of them is too short to reach the metal ball. How do I fix this, extend the "shock arm" or adjust the cylinder transmission arm so that they line up (to snap the plastic ball joint to the metal ball)? Bonus points if someone can tell me how they became misaligned. Perhaps this is why the first plastic ball joint cap broke in the first place?!

    Never mind. I figured it out. You adjust the position of the transmission levers with the "roof up and down button". Problem resolved.

    I have to replace one myself. There are metal ball joints as well in stead of the plastic ones. The question is : can you cause any damage by using the metal piece? Just curious!

  • @HelpMeDIY

    @HelpMeDIY

    Жыл бұрын

    +streetfighter3k I would avoid the metal ones. They are plastic on purpose to be the weak point that breaks in case you have an obstruction to avoid damaging more expensive parts :)
