    I got mine with 105,000 miles. Original southern California car, one owner, dealer serviced. Full PPI stiill running great on original IMS. Now have 127,000 with no problems. No smoke, no leaks, change oil every 5,000 miles with Blackstone oil analysis and still excellent report on engin wear. Hope to get 200,000 miles, then consider my options to rebuild.

    Glad you enjoyed it. Hope you find a good one. Unfortunately, prices are up a good amount from when I made this video, so a Good C4S will often be going for over $40K now. Still a lot of car for the money. The market may soften in the near future, but no one knows for sure. Of course if the C4S prices stays higher and depending on your budget, the C2 and C4 provides plenty of fun for a bit less. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

    I have a 996.2 Turbo X50, and agree with pretty much everything you said. One important thing to check on a used AWD Porsche is that the tires are all the correct size. Running tires of different diameters can actually wear out and blow the front differential, so as these cars get cheaper, it's more likely for someone to make this mistake. Otherwise, the wide-body 996.2 is one of the best looking modern porsches and that lightbar is iconic.

    I think this is incorrect. As standard the rear axle is intended to be overspan by 5% as a minimum, in order to allow the same amount of torque to be transferred as a minimum via the viscous coupling to the front axle.

    I have a C4S. Great car with only 50, 000 on the clock. Now in the shop having: New IMS. RMS. New brake pipes and new mufflers. Not paying the silly price for original sports silencers and going with Milltek. I live in the uk and I have had this car about 18 months and knew that it would cost to run. it does. Despite one owner and low mileage it has cost me an extra $12000 over the past year. lets hope this is just a blip and it now settles down to more reasonable bills. I have had the 3.4 and other 996 3.6's. This is the best ! Fabulous drive and the power is just right for most drives and the few times when you give it the beans. Buy one but have a reality check. buying is the cheap part...running is not cheap.

    Very good points. I personally like to think that if someone can afford to purchase a new Porsche then they can afford to own a 20 year is hold Porsche. They are normally economical to run, but if something goes wrong or needs more expensive maintenance it can cost a decent amount. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.

    I have an ‘02 996 Carrera C2 and would love to get my hands on a 996 C4s let alone a turbo. Enjoyed watching the video especially the IMS part. My vehicle has 160k+ miles in it and going. I was told by a lot of techs at Porsche (and my all reliable indy shop) that as long as you do your regular maintenance you should be in good shape. There is of course the risk involved by not replacing the IMS, but there are telltale signs when you do the oil change.

  • @OurRideLife

    @OurRideLife

    You make some very good points. I would be very tempted in a 996 C4S, GT car or Turbo myself to go with my ‘99 C2, but I haven’t found just the right deal at the right time on one of those yet. The IMS Bearing is a potential issue, but then all kinds of things could go wrong. I think a few KZreadrs and guys in forums have made the issue look worse than it is. Good thing is I think people are starting to realize every engine isn’t about to blow up any second. As you said there often are some warning signs ahead of time and most of the time they go before 50K miles. I’m of the school of thought that you replace it when doing the clutch as you are already there for manual cars. If everything else looks good then it seams like changing it is a good idea while in there. If taken care of the M96 can be a reliable engine. Hoovie’s Garage had the Apollo 911 for over 260K miles with no issues until he had oil starvation on the track. So, if maintained it is potentially possible to get to 300K miles without a rebuild. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to share your experience.

    also. The 4S is not just a turbo look without the turbo. if you have ever driven one and then drive a turbo you will immediately know the difference. my friend is a porsche collector who owns a 991.2 GT2RS, 996.2 GT2, 991.1 Turbo with mods and after he drove my 4S he went out and bought one. He is so amazed at the way the car drives and handles and delivers power. The gear ratios are totally different in the manual and the way the engine delivers the power and the handling is way different than the turbo. I will be posting a video soon on my channel with his new 4S and his other porsches.

    Good point on how it drives differently which would be to be expected. The difference would be more noticeable going from a 991 Turbo to a 996 C4S as the 996 will have closer to a vintage 911 feel, which is more involving. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

    The 991 and a 996 are two different worlds!.....not even a comparison. Same dynamics but a bit more enhanced. I like your video but the 996 4S is the closest you will get to a classic Porsche and where the brand is today. I have driven them all!.

  • @OurRideLife

    @OurRideLife

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks and I think overall you are correct (and having also driven the 991, I agree that they are quite different that the 996), with the exception of the early 996. The thing that the C4S doesn’t have that the earliest 996’s have is the cable driven throttle body. eGas has its benefits, but the 1999 (and in some places they had the ‘98) was the last time you had a traditional cable driven throttle body. This helps add to the vintage driving feel and you can open your hood if your battery dies without finding a cable or putting leads on the fuse box. I do personally think that values of the 996 GT cars and Turbo will keep going up and then the C4S will be next in line. Early manual coupes with a cable driven throttle body will probably follow those cars in raising values with other well maintained examples following those. Enjoy your C4S it’s a great car.

    4 wheel drive is very nice to have under somewhat wet conditions. Since I have mine I prefer to drive the little roads in the rain. Why? Almost no cyclists and hikers on the twisty roads! I like that a lot. A 4S is very nice to look at, but mine 3.6 Carrera 4 is a little bit narrower which is nice in tight corners. I was not especially looking for a 3.6, but the difference in power in the midrange is more than you would expect. IMS has been replaced by a lubricated one. So no worries about that.

    I first started looking at the 996 for my 1st 911, did some research and wasn't too bothered with the IMS issues. It was when I saw the 997 that swept me away! The return to form round head lights, the beautiful round tail end and the sexy curve hips won me over and I knew at that point I had to have one. Ended up finding a 997.2 with a 6sp manual locally and bought it. It's been nothing but a joy riding it and I've been doing that a lot lately to entertain myself while keeping social distance. Still like the 996 and wouldn't mind owning the C4S at all.

    Sounds like you got a good one. There is usually a decent jump in price from the 996 to the 997.2 because of the lack of an IMS Bearing, but it is certainly quite a car. Before buying my 996 I just missed out on a 997.1 and while I love the 996, I can see why many prefer the 997. Both are great cars especially when you put them up with their rivals from their time periods. Enjoy driving your 911! Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.

    I have an 03 C4S in Australia. I bought it with 78,000 Kms from the original, elderly German owner. It was well looked after and raised to clear driveway obstacles. I watch the video/s as I cannot drive my car too far because of Covid restrictions. The points raised are fair and reasonable for those looking to buy one. I spent some money when first acquired to return it to normal height,(removing OEM suspension spacers), replacing the original clutch, installing the LN IMS solution, replacing a weeping rear suspension strut ( by replacing both), servicing and checking the rest of the car. It cost about AUD $5000.00 Since then I have covered about 6,000 Kms, over 4 years and had only yearly oil change bills($500). The RMS had already been replaced. There was no sign of bore scoring, nor any other problem or overrevving. My son got to 185Km per hour going up the highway and now he appreciates how well it is engineered. The car will cost money in the long run and may depreciate further, but buying the best available is possibly the best insurance you can have against big bills in the future. Maintaining it as needed is also an obvious solution. I do not find mine noisy or uncomfortable on decent tarmac. Mine is worth about $75,000 now.

    The C4S normally aspirated engine has to be a pro! Just cause of how it sounds and drives it has such smooth power deliver and sounds amazing particularly if you get the sports exhaust with valves .. changing diff oil & trans oil on my manual made it feel very slick.. I drive a lot of narrow B roads with camber and weather conditions can vary so much no way you would keep with me in a back wheel drive car!

Apparently the computer doesn't care and won't throw codes, etc. Plus you are almost 200# lighter. So, proactively remove the assembly if you don't require AWD or, if it starts to fail, you have the option of just pulling it.

  • @OurRideLife

    @OurRideLife

    4 жыл бұрын

    It isn’t as bad as most make it out to be on the daily driving. It does make your car less quick when really pushes, so 0-60 takes about a half second longer. However, if maintained by draining transmission fluid and changing the transmission filter then the transmission is pretty much bulletproof (should be done every 90K miles). I have an early Tiptronic S, but the 996 C4S will have a later Tiptronic that was sourced from Mercedes. It is supposed to be an upgrade over the original as it has 250 shift patterns when driving in automatic mode versus 5 for the early 996 Tiptronic. It will start in second gear and shift fairly early when in automatic mode and driving around town. I find that it is best to put it in manual mode when you want to take off from a light to pass a slower vehicle. This allows for you to down shift to 1st before taking off and to rev the engine a bit more. At times I miss the connection with the manual, but I don’t miss my knee acting up after driving it or using a clutch in stop and go traffic. I’m not a big fan of the buttons, but the early PDK transmissions had a somewhat similar setup and I do think the Tiptronic buttons are easier to use than the PDK. There is a way to upgrade to paddle shifters using a Mercedes paddle shift part and some wiring. I’m trying to source a steering wheel from a non-Tiptronic car to use for the mod, so I don’t ruin the original steering wheel if it all goes wrong. Even though it isn’t as quick as a manual most average drivers manage similar times on the track. Only very good drivers will be able to drive beyond the Tiptronic’s ability. Hopefully that helps. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

    Our Ride Life - Hi, just subscrived to your channel, as I also entirely subscrive to this comment of yours, as I have "exactly" a tiptronic 996 C4S bought in Germany ( where seemingly almost no one is aware of IMS issues whatsoever ) since a year and 11k km now... I’ll add the tip. box despite not being "State of the art technology " compared to PDK and/or DSG etc, has proven very effective and ... "smart" in its ability to "understand" the driver’s mood and operate accordingly ... Most of times it is already at "fifth" just as low as at 55 km/h ... but if it "feels" you’re in the "step to the pedal mood" it can so readily push up to more than 200 km/h still keeping in "third" ... got it ? Also I care less than zero about the 2.2 more seconds from a 100 to 200 km/h recover it takes over its manual sibbling ... in "real world driving", it means "nothing" specialy in a world with each day more & more cars by square meter, and "restrictions" of every kind ... So in a "macho" point of view, yes manual would be a "more agressive " drive feel, but just 10-15% of the time ( Sunday mornings maybe ) ... the other 85-90% I’m happy to have came to the conclusion I take the benefits of a much better "quality of live" each kilometer I’m driving my 996 C4S ... And what an "antidepressant" it is ... and not even a "doctor prescription" was ever needed !... 👍👌

    I own a 4S. My philosophy is this: if you cannot afford to fix any issue even if it means spending thousands then you shouldn't be looking at a 4S. These cars might be affordable to the average joe to buy but they will cost you a long the way to maintain the car. Yes you can buy it but make sure you set aside at least $15-20,000 in case any surprises. I am one year in with my 4S and i haven't had any issues that was caused by the car. Bore scouring is proned to any 996 model at the end of the .1 generation to the .2. its not as common as all these youtubers make it seem. same as IMS, RMS, AOS. porsche did their own research and i believe it was less than 5 % of cars if I am correct. Don't get into a 911 if you are worried about money

    You have some good points and some issues are on all 996 models (outside of the Turbo or GT models) with some displacements more prone to the issue than others. I agree that in general they are overblown. My advice for folks that want to buy a used Porsche is to be able to afford a fairly new Porsche. If you can afford a new 718 Cayman, but you pay $15K-$20K for an older 911 you should be in a good place if you need any larger repairs. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts.

    Yes, depending on the shop and how much it can start to cost a lot. Something to remember is that while these cars are inexpensive to buy, they are still cars that would have been over $80K nearly 20 years ago, so sometimes the maintenance prices can resemble this fact. Although, depending on what IMS bearing they planned to use, that part could have been half the price by itself. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.

Dont know which one.. the LN engineering bearing is way expensive but does not require machining except to hog out a slight area for the oil passage line. Not very precise machining needed. I have my bmw 3 series going in for a tire issue monday so will ask more about what bearing they normally install. Buying a 12 to 20 year old car that still has the origional bearing i think i would be fine putting the stock one back in starting w a new one. Hope you find a good one and agree that some of it depends on the value of the car and how much a small chance of failure you can live with. I’ve know many folks with well over 100K miles on the original bearing. Of course if it goes then that isn’t fun, but then things happen all the time on any car, but routine maintenance helps reduce the chances of things happening.

I would star the pricing in the mid-$40’s as people will normally try to negotiate you down. If it doesn’t move very fast then you can lower the price a bit or just keep it posted for a while as the market is slowing a bit so you may get a bit less interest than about six months ago. Good evening, from Japan. I found this video very helpful, so I'll write down why, should it help you build content in future. My wife has just given birth to our first daughter, and I was debating swapping out my Ferrari 348 which I bought for around 50,000USD. I love the car, but its far too loud to live in a suburb in crowded Tokyo, and I can't drive it if it rains, nor can I take it for long tours in fear of breakdown, or depreciation from mileage. I can't visit my in-laws in it either, because they live in a snow covered area of Japan. I can't wrap the car or put decals, because I can't risk damaging the fragile Rosso Corsa paintwork. I also need 2 more seats. I pondered over: Ferrari 456GT (MT) - Manual V12 Ferrari, Grand Tourer. Lexus LC500 (AT) - Epic 2UR-GSE Engine Porsche 996 Carrerra 4S (MT) - All wheel drive, can actually go places, rather than keep it under cover. Lancia Delta HF Integrale Evo II (MT) - Fearing the maintenance Mercedes Benz 500E W124 (AT) - Fearing the maintenance Mercedes Benz 320CE-24 (AT) - Wonderful car overall Audi TT Quattro (AT) - Cheap and Cheerful Toyota Celica XX (MT) - Japanese nostalgia Toyota Celica GT Four Carlos Sainz (MT) - Can put rally stickers on it. The Lexus LC did not depreciate enough for me to afford it, so I went with the C4S. This video helped me a lot with starting an honest conversation with the previous owner! Thank you!

    To find a specific 2004 911 C4S tomorrow will likely be difficult in the Knoxville TN area. You can use autotempest.com and search for 911s in a given area to see what shows up as it searches most major listing sites. I did a search of the Knoxville area (300 mile radius) and didn’t see any C4S models for sale currently. I did see a Carrera 4 for sale under your price, but that will be a narrow body car instead of the wide body turbo look. If you want to purchase one right away you’ll need to be willing to look throughout the country. For example there are two for sale in Los Angeles, California, but they are low mileage examples and above your price (of note, prices have risen some since I made this video, so you’ll need to find a higher mileage example to get in your price range). If you want a 996 C4S specifically, I would recommend searching for the car on autotempest and Google searches to see if you find one within your price range in a part of the country that you are wanting to travel. California and Florida are likely to have the most examples. Texas and New York would also be good states to improve your chances of finding a Carrera 4S. As for the pre-purchase inspection that should be a shop local to the car. They should be familiar with a 996 generation of the Porsche 911. A good seller won’t have an issue with a pre-purchase inspection when you ask if it would be OK to have one. Usually if a seller says no to allowing one I would walk away. It often means they are hiding something. To find a shop for a pre-purchase inspection I recommend contacting the local Porsche club. They are usually very helpful in finding a good shop in a given area. For the Knoxville area specifically you can visit the local Porsche Club of America website at: www.eurotechknoxville.com/pca/ I hope that helps and that you find a good dependable Porsche 911. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

It’s improved engine lubrication system reduces the likelihood of your 3rd con. It is more powerful than the C4S, lighter, and offers the more connected RWD 911 driving experience. Has sportier suspension, better interior and much rarer than the C4S. Some of that depends on how bad the engine is gone. The price I’ve heard most is $10K, of course some of this depends on if there is additional work done and how much you can do yourself. In some cases an engine swap for another 997.1 engine from a car that was in a crash in the front is a better financial option. While some of your points are valid for the C4S, things like interior noise are louder than newer 911s, but the suspension on the C4S is similar to the Turbo (although not exactly the same due to differences in the weight of each). It uses the M30 suspension setup which is better for sporty driving than the standard suspension found in the standard 996 without the option. Some do upgrade the struts and a lot of folks change out things like the lower control arms for GT3 suspension parts. AWD is not worth it for these cars. They suck in the snow because of how low they are and fixing the front differential is expensive and not worth it. Better of with rear wheel drive only. I owned two of these cars and to be honest they have a nice exterior but the interior is awful. Lousy ergonomics, no cup holders, your right knee hits the center console, your left knee hits the door card, terrible gas mileage and to be frank they don't handle all that well. Better off with a new Mini Cooper for the money.

  • @OurRideLife

    @OurRideLife

    4 жыл бұрын

    You have some valid points, especially depending on how much snow an area gets and how well the roads are maintained. The AWD maintenance was a con in this video because of the maintenance and repair of the front differential. For the interior it is awful by today’s standards. However, when you compare it to cars from its era like the Ferrari 360, it holds it own, very well, especially with the full leather. Most 996.2 cars do come with cup holders. Now they aren’t the best cup holders, but they are there. So, if you had a 996.2 perhaps someone removed the cup holders. You could get cup holders in the 996.1, but most won’t have them as is the case with my current 996. You are correct about the cramped feeling for anyone over six foot tall. Most folks that are taller go for the center console delete which fixes much of the cramped feeling. Handling is a matter of what you are looking for. If the suspension is well kept and on good tires they can handle well, but won’t compare to a new 911 with its wizardry. The 996 was the last fully analog 911 and the handling is closer to the air-cooled cars. You really do have to brake into the corner and set your line and then as you come out of a corner you use all of the traction to take off. For more neutral handling a Boxster or Cayman is going to be much better. When you consider that a 987 Cayman S will cost about the same as a 996 C4S, it makes that a hard choice. The Cayman has neutral mid-engine handling and almost as much power with a more modern interior. The 996 C4S (outside of the e-gas and PASM) will feel closer to a vintage 911 albeit a bit more refined. As for gas mileage, some of that depends on how you drive, but if you have a more sporty driving style the mileage won’t be good. If you are a more conservative driver then you can do OK, but a newer car will be much better on that front in general. Some people love them and others dislike the way they drive. The best advice for anyone looking into any Porsche would be to test drive one and see if you like it. Some people only want the 911 because it is the top of the line (with a few exceptions) model, but they may be happier with a Boxster or Cayman. Just depends on what you want in a driving experience. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.

    Mac daddy, better off with a new Mini Cooper for the money? Not sure how fast you drive or how straight your roads are, but ‘any’ 911 is still a bespoke sportscar chassis and as such, is in a totally different class to anything this side of an M3. I actually drove an M3 back to back with my 997 C4S, and the difference was stark - the M3 felt like the ‘derived from a regular sedan chassis’ that it clearly was. I have driven newer, more capable Porsche’s too, and the C4S is always the ‘peach’ of the group. Sorry you had such a poor experience. Mini Cooper’s are cool cars, but not comparable with a 911, even a 25 year old one.

    Mac daddy - Not sure you understood what i meant by bespoke - the 911 doesn’t share it’s underpinnings with any other model - it is therefore by definition, a bespoke chassis. Almost the entire motoring journalist industry disagrees with you. I have late 90’s, early 2000’s articles from EVO magazine, Car magazine and Car and motor - they all rave about the C4S handling. Just one example - May 2002 issue of EVO magazine - 996 C4S beats the NSX, Corvette Z06 and BMW M coupe in handling/overall performance. Motoring journalist Jethro Bovingdon, personal car? 996 C2. I have no doubt that you were left underwhelmed by your 996, but that doesn’t make it a bad car. Perhaps yours was not the best example, perhaps you didn’t drive it as intended, I don’t know. But I’ll stick to the opinion of the world’s motoring press and that of my own experience (and the wide eyes of my friends who have ridden with me in my C4S, many of whom have amazing cars).

    Lies. I owned many of these and your points are baseless. The youtubers are trying to raise the value on these broken cars just to sell UP. Sleezy Aholes

    But let us know how you really feel? In seriousness, this video was to go over the points that I went through as to if I was going to purchase a 996 C4S for replacing my 986 Boxster. I didn’t end up getting a C4S, but an early C2 instead. So, if I raise the values I won’t benefit from that on this one. As with all sports cars there are issues. They are good for what they are, but one does need to go into ownership with their eyes wide open to make sure they do spend a small fortune. Also, I’m curious are you talking about the C4S in-particular or did you own just a 996. I know some have not had luck with multiple 996s and others have had multiple with no issues, so it is a case by case basis. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts.

    @@OurRideLife I have owned c4 , C2, TurboS. I admit I didn't watch the entire video so ignore the first short sentence but for the money there are way too many better cars especially on the used market. But I see a trend now where 996 owners are downplaying the issues with them and noticed the price going up as well this year. No matter how u cut it. Used, I would employ u to stay away from them unless under 12k. Thier are mode reliable, faster or just as fast Lexus models out there for the price. If it's a Porsche they want. Well... Please do not go over budget because more often than not u have lots of money to spend in less than a year.

    Fair point. Porsches are expensive sports cars and even though the purchase price of a 996 is down, repair costs could go way up if things go wrong or need replacement. My personal 996 C2 was a good price at $12,500, which is low in the current market for a coupe with under 100K miles and a clean title. Imm no personally could have bought a new Porsche, but went for a 996 because I liked the drive and even if I needed to replace the engine, suspension, etc. I would still come out mathematically ahead of the price of a new Porsche sports car. Do I plan to make money on it? Probably not and repairs can quickly cost as much as the value of the car. So people need to keep that in mind. You are correct that there are other cars that are at least as fast that will cost you less. The one thing that is different is the driving dynamics of a 911 versus say a Lexus. On paper the Lexus is the smarter buy, but you won’t have the rear-engine layout that makes a 911 unique. If you are just looking at performance and maintenance, then the Lexus is the way to go for sure. You are correct that some have been downplaying potential issues and they should make sure people know of them. IMS Bearing is the big one that is talked about and there is a retrofit for that. But Bore Scoring is potentially the bigger issue as it would also need a rebuild with re-sleeved cylinders. Depending on how you do that you can easily pay $15K-$25K to have the engine rebuilt. So, having at least $5K available for repairs is always a good idea. I have been able to do all my maintenance myself, so I don’t pay for labor. However, if someone doesn’t have that luxury, labor costs can kill you. That will often cost much more than the parts for a particular job. Thanks for making the points as any potential buyer needs to go in with their eyes wide open. Otherwise, they can quickly get over their heads and end up with an expensive paper weight. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.

    Totally disagree with this point. I've had a C2 cab, and now a C4S coupe. Couple thousand annually for normal maintenance and repairs. Better investment than any other car I've had.
