Porsche 981 GT4 Engine Belt Replacement

Serpentine Belt Replacement on a Porsche 981 GT4 with the 3.8L engine.
The biggest issue with this job is the 1 mount bracket bolt and spacer you have to remove to do the belt. If your not careful you can drop bolt and then you have to go hunting and lower the engine belly pan to retrieve them.
Removing the interior to access the belt wasn't terrible just time consuming. The whole job probably takes about 3-4 hours to complete from start to finish.

Thanks for making this video! I just changed my belt and your video made it super easy. I did have a lot of angst about dropping the bolt and the spacer but I attached my telescoping magnetic grabber to the spacer before praying the bulkhead and this made it much easier to control the spacer as I removed it and much harder to drop.

Thanks for taking the time to put these videos together. I recently picked up a GT4 and I appreciate your common sense approach to working on it. I’ve turned enough wrenches to not obsess over things like drain plug torque specs…

If your comfortable around tools you will be fine. Once I get into complicated mechanics I always use the proper torque, like the head, rod and main bolts. Things like that i will always torque.

This was very helpful for me. Thanks! I found it harder to get the old belt off than the new one on. Go figure. Getting that bolt back in by the pulley was terrifying. lol. I came really close to dropping it.

You just could have cut the old belt off and pulled it out. Maybe more recommended for someone who already changed the belt once because if it's cut you know. And you can't use it as a spare anymore, that's certain.

Nice work. Wished you would have showed removing the trim pieces. I am thinking about changing my seat belt color and need to remove them. Not sure where and what direction to pry without breaking something. I've taken the rear trim off to get to the air filters but can't quite make myself pull hard enough on that trim that holds the seat belt.

I will be doing a video of the roll bar install next month. I will be sure to include that trim piece removal do you can access the belt. But all you do is remove the top cover where to belt goes through then to remove the other one that goes down the side. You just need to pop it off 2 of the clips and there is enough room to get the belt out. just make sure to have a small pick to remove the security clip for the airbag retractor on the belt body.

just picked up a 981 GT4 so these videos will be super helpful. I'm assuming without buckets you probably wont have to remove the seats for this?

I would remove the seats to do this. Its probably only about 10 min more work for non buckets and a friend to help get them out then to work around them and possibly damage them. Welcome. This has been a dream car of mine to own since it came out in 2016.

Hello, Thank you for this video. I will never do this myself, but now I know what they do in the garage with my car :-) Only 7000miles in 5 years, don't you like driving yr GT4 ? Rgs

I've only had the car for a year. I did put almost 3K miles on it last year. I bought it with only 4300 miles on it. From the carfax it was sold new and sat for 1.5 years with hardly any miles before it really was driven

Just had my belt changed by my local Porsche Service Center, now I know why the cost was what it was. I just couldn’t do this myself. By the way, I put about 7.5 thousand a year on mine, shouldn’t you guys be driving your Caymans more often! You all know they were made to be driven 🏎

Not sure I would go to that bother for a car with such low miles and only 5 years old. Figure mine will last at least 100,000 kms before I need to tackle that job.

Yea I probably didn’t need to change it. But it was 5 years old and time can dry out the belts and cause them to crack. It only cost me 50 bux for the belt and 4 hours of my time. So didn’t look much and I kept the old belt as a spare.
