Funnily enough: My dad actually is in the Guiness Book of Records with this car, well the S version. November 7th, 1982 on the Nardo Ring. He was one of the drivers of the 24-hour highest average speed challenge. They`ve set the record of that time with an average speed of 251.4 km/h (156.2 mph) covering 6,033 kilometers.

As a current 928S4 owner and having been around the cars since 1980 I can tell you this is one of the most informed “history of the 928” videos out there. It was refreshing to hear just how iconic and forward thinking this car was when it debuted. Car and Driver said at the time that it made the 911 look like an antique. They also later called it the “Titanic” of supercars, referring to its massive depreciation but that’s another story. Great that Al Holbert’s flying trap run was included in the video. The car Magnus Walker was exhibiting is a very early car, #88 and like a lot of 928s was in desperate need of restoration but he’s the right guy for the job. Kudos to a great video keeping the story alive!

I graduated from high school in 1977. For over 20 years the 928 was the epitome of futuristic design. How many cars have ever looked fresh for that long? While the 928 was not the future of Porsche, it was certainly not its biggest “fail.”

I love how Uptospeed went from talking about cars only, now covers a wider spectrum like shows, to entire stories

FYI: car parts has really long shipping times currently despite their guaranteed 2 day shipping promise. They also do a really annoying thing where they break your purchase into multiple different boxes and ship them out during different times. This becomes a huge issue when you've just purchased a whole suspension replacement for your car, which is not OEM I may add, only to get each strut and shock assembly to show up at your door spread out by a few days in between. They took 3 weeks to get my whole order to me, not 2 days. And they don't have everything you might need, like a heated seat replacement for your car. You're better off scouring the junk yards for one of those. The prices were good though, but you're essentially getting off brand ebay parts.

You know, just an idea! You got a lot of fans. Why dont you (and whatever members want to) do an Up To Speed on yourseleves? How you got into cars, cars youve had, how you got there, and where you want to be? I would be down for that for a next episode. Each chapter could be a different member or each member could get an Up To Speed on themseleves.

The 928 will always hold a place in my heart. My dad had a manual 79 928 for around 10 years. It was the car I learned to drive manual on, the car I drove to prom, and also a car that Magnus drove! He’s since sold it and I miss it but the memories will be with me forever.

I love that everything I’ve ever seen Magnus in he comes off as humble and lucky. Total creative genius and an icon with amazing taste and seems so down to earth.

Their biggest fail was my biggest win ever. Proudly owning a 928 GTS for 18 years now and it has appreciated by 100% during that time. It is still a great daily because it has a serious trunk and was built to last.

I own a 1983 black on black 5 speed 928 S with the 4.7 liter V8 , near perfect leather interior and BBS wheels. I had it supercharged at 928 Motorsport in Wisconsin . It is a very tight fast Grand Tourer and still turns heads and wins awards at auto shows. Not really too expensive to maintain .

I’m going to rebel here and mention the car. The 928 was an electrifying design in its day and stole my heart. Besides the numerous design features, it was those Pasha checkerboards that stunned the senses. Long live the 28!

The 928 was my dream foreign car all through my youth. I loved it well before it was in any movies, only adorning magazine pages. Risky Business wasn't very good, but I loved seeing that 928, and almost cried when it got dunked. I still adore it.

In the late '80's, I had a high school, neighborhood friend that her father had one of these in his garage. He never let his daughter drive it, no matter how many times she begged, and believe me, she was extremely spoiled. Anyway, one day I was over there and he walked out in the yard, threw me the keys and told me to drive him to the store. It was not a far, or fast drive, but it was an incredible drive for me at the time. Imagine a 17 year old kid sliding behind the wheel of one of these beauties. Man, I thought my head was going to explode, but I had to keep my cool. I honestly don't remember the year model of the car, I just remember looking at it every time I would go over there and the garage door would be open. Even with the car cover on it, that car looked cool as heck.

In 1982 I was a junior in high school and my mother was dating this guy who had a 280ZX Turbo. He was going for a weekend with mom and he tossed me the keys. Mom was as surprised as I was. She said “What if he wrecks it?” He replied “I’ll get it fixed.” I had a great weekend, I even got a date with someone I had no shot at. And to this very day I love the ZX, not the Z, but yes the ZX. I have owned two and would not be against having another, if the price is right. The only 928 memories I have are from 1980, I got to clean the windows…I worked in a car wash.

loved that car, had an '87 s4 back in '89. multiplisticly orgasmic, especially for a 25 year old. I thought there shouldve been a 4 door version then. porsche finally listened decades later and made the panamera.

I have owned 2 Porsche 928's and I miss them immensely. They were more than they were advertised for. Very solid suspension. I wish I could get another GT 5 speed.

Thank you so much for this wonderful video, Donut. I really love the way you guys mentioned the Porsche 911's short wheelbase. The way you guys mention it reminds me how incredible the 911's development was: longer wheelbase, electronic devices, and bigger tires not to mention engine upgrades, too. That is why I love Porsche and its 911.

I had an '84 928S. Part of an estate sale. Got it cheap($6000 back in the 1990s), but it had not been loved. One expensive malfunction after another. Hatchbach latch, sunroof, overheating issues, HVAC issues, all the kind of stuff that Honda and Toyota get right on Civics and Corollas. I sold it after a few years.

Great collab! I love how Up to Speed is evolving while keeping the fun factor that's always been there!

I acquired this car and turned it into a race car and ran Speed World Challenge in it. such an amazing piece of automotive history. it was also hit in the race by Derek Bell in one of the races (and he signed the dent in the front bumper afterr the race) , as well as been driven by Al Holbert.

My favorite part of this channel is how James still laughs at his own jokes

Fascinating vid about the history of the 928, many thanks. I've owned 2 928s, a 1990 S4 and a 1993 GTS and loved them both. Currently have a manual Iris Blue 1996 993 Carerra in the garage along with a (gasp) 1986 BMW 635CSi. I've also been lucky enough to have had a couple of 944s (Lux and an S2) plus the odd Ferrari ( 2 328 GTBs, a 360 Modena, an F355 and a 456GT). My wife likes her little Skoda Fabia but puts up with my car madness (happy wife, happy life). Cheers from a rather chilly Otford, Kent, UK.

1985 Porsche 928s. First car I ever went over 150mph in. Was really stable,.. when it ran. And this was a car with only 79k miles on it. So epnsive to fix and nobody wanted to work on these. I did really like the car. Had an awesome feel, like it was made for a giant German man!

When I heard him say gorillas, I immediately started singing the song only to hear him complete it also. Very satisfied with him

I recently discovered this channel. I’m not a genuine car enthusiast but love cars for sure. I’m not super knowledgeable but after watching each of the few videos I have seen I feel genuinely educated. If there’s one thing you are is a storyteller and a teacher with a keen eye for the value of humor. But a consummate storyteller for sure. Take a bow Mr!

My dad had one 928S here in Spain when i was a kid! wow.. what an engine!! great car BRO!

For what I've read, the (also) front-engined Porsche 944 was one of the most successful Porsches ever, its discontinuation more due to its cannibalizing the much more profitable Porsche 911 line...

Can I just take a moment to ask you all to watch this back. Then pay attention to the editing and single word OTT references via the "graphics" work. A MASSIVE SHOUT OUT to the person who pieced this together. Trashy, funny, on point and relevant. I'm unsure if I should be in awe, or dismayed. Smashed it. 🧐

I've loved the 928 right from the 80's to now. It still looks contemporary to me and I'd love to own one.

I LOVE the 928. My uncle bought a 1992 928 GTS in 1995. He still owns it. Metallic blue and its still gorgeous. Fantasticly underrated car.

I used to own an '83 928S (Indisch Rot) and it was my daily driver for the better parts of 6 years. It was my dream car for the longest and, at 194cm (6' 4"), this was just about the only sports car I could fit in comfortably. When everything worked, it was wonderful! But, as the video showed, there were a lot of "firsts" with this car, not all of them great - like the fact that the instrument cluster was the first which was digitally controlled, not analog. There was a thin ribbon circuit board behind the cluster that powered the dials and that was plugged into a bus that would regularly burnout the connection leads. When it burned out, you now had zero instrumentation. Good luck explaining that to the Polizei! To replace it, you had to remove the entire instrument cluster, which was a minimum 3 hour task by an experienced mechanic and required special tools to do it. Another first for Porsche was the aluminum-plastic hybrid radiator, which was a piece of junk. If the plastic cracked, like mine did, you couldn't repair it - just throw it away and get another one. Even with all of that, when it was working, it was an amazing machine! I have driven nothing like it since and would buy one tomorrow if I could!

I remember flipping through the 928 brochure in the waiting room of my doctor’s office.

Its not failure, its a rare Porsche success story.

This was actually hell of a good video of 928. Excellent information. 928 GTS is one of the most desirable Porsches to me. It's a beauty and the build quality of those cars is astonishing. Actually much better than anything produced today.

the car looks like it came out in the late 80s early 90s, especially the interior... way ahead of its time!

This video is epic. Whoever does the editing is a genius! Funny funny stuff. There are a couple of mistakes (I.e the 5.0 V8 put out 288 hp not 227, it was a two generation car, 17 years of production instead of 18) but you nailed the overall vibe and purpose of the car where DeMuro missed it badly. Looking forward to the horse cream. Might even buy a horse..

I was a 928 fan. Also James in a turtleneck looks like archer wearing his tactical turtleneck

“Find out…. now” What we have always wanted but never deserved

I owned a '78 928 5 speed for about 25 years. Handling was amazing. I just loved it. The only design that I think Porsche really messed up on was the massive external dimensions of the small displacement 4.5L. Bore spacing was silly. I think it really caused problems for the designers and stylists.

Love my 86 1/2 928. Horsepower is 288 not 228 for the 32 valve 5.0 pre knock sensor.. Rear sun visors are for the back of the head/neck of the rear seat passengers.

As a kid in the 90ies I really loved the look of the 928 and 944. To this day I get a kick out of seeing them

Fun fact: you’ll never hear Jeremy Clarkson talk negatively about the 928. There’s a really sad story told by him on youtube about why the 928 will always remain very special to him. I suggest you guys check it out.
