Porsche 928 - AUTO DIDAKT Design Review

The Porsche 928 failed miserably at its main objective: replacing the 911.
Yet it succeeded brilliantly at establishing a new standard for modernist sports car design.
Fine out why the Neunachtundzwanzig is a design marvel after all, on par with the best of the best, courtesy of the usual AUTO DIDAKT analysis.

What a pleasure this video was. To say I love the 928 is an understatement. I worship that design! I don't see the fact it didn't sell as well as Porsche hoped as the car's fault, but that of an imperfect, ignorant, uncouth world that couldn't understand it and therefore didn't deserve it. If there's a car I really wish I could afford to own, this is it.

Kudos to Anatole 'Tony' Lapine and Wolfgang Möbius for designing such a beautiful and timeless car. The later 928's maybe sleeker and quicker but aesthetics on the original late 70's-to-early 80's were perfect. Superb presentation.

The 928 blew my 14 yr old mind in 1978 and I was nearly knocked down by a 928 on an icy Sunday morning Jan 1979, Manchester, UK during a paper round. I even figured it would’ve been an honourable death😂 In the early 2000s I owned a 928 S4 for 13 glorious years, my love of this masterpiece is forever ❤

From 2005-2011, I had a 1990 S4, did 180tkm with it, bought at 50tkm. I call this model "Kõnig der Autobahn." Nothing till today offers such a perfect combination as a long distance car. 456 comes close, but servicing costs are in another league.

Well thought out video. I own a 928 and often think how advanced the design was back in 1977. The car still looks modern even by todays offerings. So many press releases or TV programs have constantly bereated the car as not being a 911 replacement. In fact, back in the late 70s the 928 was far superior to the 911 both in engineering, build and of course design. From 1977 to 1995 it clearly had a dedicated clientele or Porsche would have stopped producing the car. The same narrow thoughts were given to the 924, the Boxster (which saved Porsche from financial ruin) and the Cayenne which is the best selling Porsche car of all time!

Good points, as a fellow 928 owner, I find myself thinking the same thing - how advanced it must have seemed at the time of launch. When I bought mine 7 years ago, the first time my mother saw it she asked "Is that one of the new Porsches?" Now obviously she's not in any way a car enthusiast but even so, I don't think there are many 40 year old cars that could be mistaken as something more contemparary

Finally a video that examines the 928 from a design perspective and gives some meaningful insight into the unique environment in which it was created. Thank you @AutoDidakt. However, that remarkable group of minds and all that R&D money didn't create a sub-par sports car. The 928's handling is exceptional and, post-1980, they got the power they needed. Perhaps the 2 factors that contributed most to the 928's 'downfall' were 1. The 4.5L it was introduced with was underpowered at 250HP, it was quickly upgraded (1980) to the 300hp 4.7L except for the all-important American market where it remained underpowered until 1985. 2. around 80% were delivered with an auto box. To really appreciate a 928's performance, you need at least 300HP and the manual. Around 12, 000 manuals were produced so they are out there and worth seeking out. A car this good won't stay underappreciated forever

Real number of manual cars is much higher than 12,000. This has been known for nearly 20 years already but still these old tales are often told. Exact 5sp total isn't known because '78-79 data is incomplete but its around 20,000. In '78 model year 3830 cars were made. Almost all of them were manual because automatic production started later in model year and was small at the start. '79 total was 5437 and many more are manual than in later model years. Exact split is known for '80-95 model years. 17,955 were manual and 33,390 were automatic. This means at least 35% of total production was manual gearbox cars based on known data. Knowing approximately how few '78-79 were automatic means actual split is approximately 40% were manual.

@@erkkavilhunen4916 "estimates suggest that in excess of 80% of all 928s produced, featured an automatic transmission" source, Wikipedia. 928 total production #61,056 so 20% = 12,211. Not sure what your source is but if you've ever tried to buy a manual 928, you might question its veracity. For example, of the 36 928s for sale right now in Australia, 4 are manual. I've never seen the figures you're proposing and my personal experience and cited sources indicate they are not accurate. Also, how did you calculate that of the 9,287 cars produced from 78-79, 20,000 were manual? You should do my tax

There isn't any reason to even argue about this as every single 928 made in '80-95 model years is known. Data is straight from factory system. This means options including what gearbox they had is known. Read Rennlist 928 forum. If you have any questions after that ask them in there. Known VINs include also every C23 Australia option car made in '80-95 model years. Of those 1265 cars 251 were manual. So 19,8% is correct for Australia but only for those model years. Total % goes up even in Australia as automatic really was uncommon especially in '78. Australia is not the world and in other places manual was more common. As I said, 928 community knows the details and has known them for nearly 20 years already. Rennlist has VIN thread which was started in 2007 and still misinformation is spread by many who think they know better.

The fact that in 2024 it doesn't look old is a testament to how good the design was. It didn't fail, it was like being the most beautiful girl in the town but your sister is Miss World. Not a failure. If the 911 had never existed the 928 would have been Porsche's finest hour.

It always looked so much nicer in the flesh than in the pictures - which was all you had back then. It had that solid, integrated. breadth and depth, like a die cast boiled sweet. It reached its peak with the S4, I think. A tiny car by modern standards. A lovely, airy cabin, and practical as well.

The 928 always seemed like a European muscle car to me. The design is striking with a great stance, there is a reason way it was featured as 'thee' desirable car in so many 80's movies. And of course, it inspired great platforms like the 944 and 968. I'm sure a modern 928 design with a modern 32V DOHC V8 would look and sound amazing and be highly desirable.

What a pleasure to watch this video! I love the fact that it is a real design overview and critique, from designers, not just the “review” from car “aficionados”. Very well crafted, and researched. My only two critiques: (1) wish it was longer; and (2) the video itself is somewhat too fast on some of the static views making me having to stop, rewind, and pause in order to appreciate the information…. Otherwise perfect! Keep them coming.

De facto, the best Porsche design ever in my opinion, I still love it, now like then, because it looks like an Italian super car. the only one that does so. In fact this was heavily influenced by a design of a decade before, the Chevy Corvette Testudo by Giugiaro when working for Bertone, known as the Turtle. Go check it out. And it has those small square lights in the front which I so love, as they give it a strong character, that are similar to what you can find on a 288 GTO or the tiny rectangular one found on an M1 (also by Giugiaro). And nowadays on the appreciated Hyundai Ionic5 that in fact is inspired by 70's Italian supercar design. The round headlights that come up like in a Miura. And the rear is so futuristic.

Kein anderes Auto konnte in den 70ern dem 928 das Wasser reichen.

So ist es - der Testudo diente als Inspiration. Im Gegensatz zum AMC Pacer, der erst nach dem design freeze des 928 vorgestellt wurde.

If by sensible you mean more comfortable, faster, quieter, more fuel efficient, safer, and in my opinion better looking than the 911. The 928 is a better car than any 911 of period

The 928 is difficult to evaluate fairly, as it was a significant engineering achievement for the mid 1970's, but also, as noted, a failure at its' intended mission (replacing the 911). With hindsight, it probably suffered from being too much a compromise - not small, light, and sharp handling enough to be a capable sports car, but not quiet and smooth riding enough to be a true grand tourer.

Probably the jacket was tailored for 170 cm Neapolitan who did not show up for the delivery and are not the brown shoes, mustard/brown/black cloth color combinations a bit "daring". I very much liked the choice of the Lapine 928 and the location (Berlin congress hall, Architect Hugh Stubbins) but I found the presentation a bit stilted and thought advice might help.Sorry, but I never found Germans emulating Italian swagger very convincing!
