This is a 911 that wrote a big part of Porsche history. It was the first turbo powered Porsche 911 and the first turbo powered Porsche at Le Mans.
This chassis debuted in the hands of Gijs van Lennep and Herbert Müller at the Le Mans 4-Hours race but failed to reach the finish at this occasion. Its best result came a few weeks later when Van Lennep and Müller placed it third overall during the Spa 1000 km. Following its final competitive outing late in June of 1974, it was retained by the factory and is now part of the museum collection. After being a non runner for many years, the first 911 Turbo racer has been treated to a ground up restoration, which was ready in time for Porsche's 70th anniversary celebrations in 2018. It was demonstrated during this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed, with amongst others Gijs van Lennep behind the wheel.
In the 1974 24h of Le Mans Gijs Van Lennep and Herbert Müller finished 2nd overall with a sister car, behind a Matra MS670C.
They also came second in the next race at Watkins glenn behind a Matra MS670C.

Wing from hell and 20" wide rear tires. Love it.
I wasn't even born when these cars raced but somehow I feel all nostalgic when I see them. The RSR, the 917k, and my favorite the 908/3. Porshe is certainly nr1 when it comes to cars that I would love to drive some day.

When i was a kid i have rc model of this porsche exactly on this design....manufactror is Mehanotehnika Izola Yugoslavia,now Slovenia ....really nice memories! and really nice car ....and btw I was born 1974 :-))
Nothing sounds quite like a big six Porsche with a huge turbo and very little exhaust. My favorite exhaust note out of any car with exception of the Audi 5 cylinder with huge turbo and atmosphere disrupting wastegate pipe.

プラモデル作りました。
１９７５年頃、日本の少年たちの間にはスーパースポーツカーブームがあったのを海外の方はご存じでしょうかね（笑）。 私もその一人でしたが当時フジミのプラモデルでポルシェを作りました。きちんと整備されたポルシェサウンドは最高ですね。当時その姿を見る事は出来ませんでしたのでとにかく感謝したいと思います。

I owned two cars with a spare car to run on the circuit. Both of them crashed and replaced the body, but I think the body alone cost around 4,000 yen. Of course Tamiya genuine. (Lol) 私はサーキットで走らせる為にスペアカーとの二台を所有してました。 二台ともクラッシュしてボディを交換しましたが、ボディだけで４千円程だったと思います。 もちろんタミヤ純正です。（笑）

I can only imagine, if that rear axle breaks loose or ‘hops’ mid corner, when it grips up again after that first hop… this must be where earthquakes originate…

Almost bought one of these. The buyer flaked because of wrong brakes and windshield. About a week after the same car sold for 250k more. Also...great to see the 'Supercar' being dusted by the 74 design.

Amazing that such a shit original design can be marketed so well. For one thing just look at the width of those rear tyres and size of wing just to try and prevent the car from doing a 360 around any corner and all because the weight distribution is far to much towards the rear where the heavy bits are located. A decent design would have put the engine mid ships with a transaxle facing to the rear in front or alongside the rear axle. It's still like the VW Betle it was designed around. Just with bigger engines and thus bigger rear tyres and wings. Look at the Lancia Integrals S4 or the Peuget T6 to see how the layout should be like or even the humble Metro 6R4.

Facts are the 911 has been and still is a winner since it was campaigned on the tracks all over the world...The original layout was the worst you could think of, yet those germans kept working hard on it on overall basis,and eventually made it to turn their Beatle-alike gt car into a legend in car racing history.
