Porsche 911 997 Turbo - Is Tiptronic Actually BETTER?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today I'm driving Scott's 911 997 Turbo. This car is equipped with the tiptonic gearbox, and Scott thinks it isn't as bad as everyone makes out. Let's see.

Owned manual cars for many years and no longer keen on driving them in traffic. On the open road they can be nice but in town they're a pain. In any case this car has a huge amount of torque low down the rev range so one can execute ferocious overtakes without even changing gears. I'd take the tiptronic without hesitation.

The Tiptronic S is an upgrade to the original Tiptronic, with the ability to adapt to driver's behaviour, and also allows driver to change gears without entering manual mode. In manual mode, if there is no driver input for a period of eight seconds, the system reverts to automatic mode.

The Porsche Tiptronic transmission is actually a Mercedes Benz 722.6 5 speed auto trans that was used a lot in their high HP high torque models like the E55 AMG and the McLaren SLR. This unit was known for being light weight and capable of handling 1000 HP/TQ. It was used in a lot of Chrysler products where it was known as the NAG1. When the Eurporean motor press was shocked that 997 Turbo was faster 0-100 kph with the Tiptronic than withe manual. That was something that wasn't much of surprise to us in America where drag racing is the most popular form of motorsports. An auto especially a well built one with a higher stall torque converter will always always beat a manual every time. This especially true for a turbocharged engine where there is never an interruption of boost or power during shifts as you would experience this with a manual trans no matter how fast or skilled the driver is.

I have an 08 Turbo with a Ruf turbo conversion and an EVO chip. For a daily driver I hate the on and off the clutch in traffic and appreciate the way the car shifts with the Tiptronic S. Drive it like a maniac or sit back, turn up the tunes and cruise. This car is wicked fast especially in Sport mode.

just traded the 997 manual C4S for the 997 turbo with the tiptronic. Spent a good bit more for the peace of mind of the Mezger in the turbo. there is an extra 100 horsepower in this trade-up. So far, the extra horsepower is nice and the tiptronic does not bother me but there's no doubt that I'll miss the visceral driving experience of the manual on a windy mountain road. agree with this guys take

Just spent THREE DAYS at one of the biggest Porsche rally's in the USA - 150+ Porsches. There was a HEAVILY modified 997.1 Turbo with Tip. That car kept up with 991 GT3 RS's - even in the corners. I'm not exaggerating. Completely changed my mind about the Tip. As for me personally, I followed a 997.1 Turbo Tip Cab through the mountains one day...for about an hour...that car was just as fast as me in the corners and MUCH faster on the straights. I will never talk down the Tip again. Is the PDK better? Sure. But the Tip is great in a Turbo

The tip box is like anything in life when it's different, doesn't conform with convention , it meets opposition. The tip box is actually very good and matches the car perfectly. I daily drive my car and fits in with my lifestyle. I have changed my steering wheel, that's my only complaint about the tip, the button placement . Steering wheel upgrade , problem gone for me. On the track you can just leave it , it kicks down well if you punch the accelerator and let it shift up in auto . Long live the tip box

Full disclosure: James drive my 997 Turbo manual last year and it's the review that is on the channel. I've had a tiptronic Turbo and sold it because while it gave immense performance and was incredibly fast in all situations, it simply wasn't that enjoyable after having a 997.1 C2S. It lasted less than a year and I went and picked up the 997 Turbo manual which is much more involved as a driver's car. But the truth is that the Turbo is probably way too fast for UK roads and the C2S is possibly the pick of the 997s... As for people asking about reliability, the only issues I've had in 6 years have been with the AC condensers rotting out, and it's cost under £2,000 to maintain in that time.

Did you get a 997.2? or 997.1. I'm torn between at 997.1 (2007) or a 997.2. I love PDK but I so prefer the look of the .1 and sound. the .1 in question has had a full engine rebuild and it already has the stronger IMS. I haven't driven a manual in over 5 years so I'm worried about stalling and being an all round worse driver haha!

My 2009 Turbo is also a Tip with ceramics. My 2012 is a PDK with Center lock wheels but not ceramic brakes. I like the TIp and the Ceramics best. The Tip shifts like the older muscle cars I grew up with, and I love the ceramics mainly because the wheels stay clean. I also think that the weight saving and marginally better braking is detectable for me. I would have also loved a manual, but that just was not an option for me at the time. These cars are so fast, I think I prefer to have both hands on the wheel when I play hard.

Personally the 15% less I paid for the car seems great value since shifting is almost nonexistent for me unless from first to second. Too each their own but I don’t regret the tiptronic purchase at all and after two plus years , I’m loving it . I have 997,1 Turbo with tiptronic, I also have a manual 996 Turbo and a 355 F1. if I had to choose one it would still be the tiptronic! Lets face it, even if we all think that we are Michael Schumacher and Rossi 99% of us are not! 997 might be getting old but its still a very fast car and no way I am driving that without both hands on the wheel! Bet that 99% can't get the full performance out of a manual 997 turbo! The 355 I always use the paddles, never in full auto! Different cars fit different driving styles. And don't forget, when new the tiptronic is the more expensive and the Turbo is a sports/cruiser not a track car! If you want the manual so bad than you should also want rear wheel drive? That means a GT3! 997 Turbo is best with Metsger and Tiptronic! My opinion!

The internet is never the correct place to find the reality about cars. RR are unreliable, Ferraris burn down and the tiptronic boxes are the worst thing in the world. I think it suits very good to the 996-997 Turbo engines, especially on the road. Most people who buy them use them as a daily driver anyway. With a relatively small amount of money you can also upgrade the software which makes the gearbox more responsive. I am wondering if the average driver-owner of one of these can shift faster than what the time the tip needs if you select it yourself through those buttons. All these cars are amazing and have their own character and soul. In my book a true petrolhead is someone who can appreciate what a machine like this can offer and not the one that just goes for the V10 noise/sound-powerrrr-manual trifecta and 'shames' everyone else's choices. I always frown when people bitch about the wooshing sound of the Turbo - Porsche is more about go than show and personally i think it sounds awesome! Thanks for the video

For me the argument about being able to shift more quickly is not really the point. I know that I can't, without any question, but the 997.2 GT3 RS shifter in my 996 Carrera is so enjoyable to use and I think I'd miss that experience. I want to move to a Turbo next and a 997 is a realistic proposition. The ~£10k difference between manual and tip is incredibly tempting... would I regret it though? "Not terrible" is hardly a glowing endorsement from someone that will have driven many 911's in many flavours. 1st world problems eh! :)

Patrick Beadle is suggest you drive both tip and manual turbos. You can’t compare a tip from any other variant as the turbo works very differently with this box due to its ferocious speed and only really having to use 2nd and 3rd gear so unsure where the manual box would actually help or be any better? In a Carrera where you’re constantly going up and down it’s understandable. Happy to take you out 👍🏻

The manual car does 75mph in 2nd and 110mph in 3rd so while you're driving it hard on the road the only gear changes you'll ever do are 2nd to 3rd (and strictly even that shouldn't be necessary, particular since it's got more than enough torque to stay in 3rd 99% of the time anyway!) and back to 2nd. Great, that's really exciting, maybe one gear change every now and then! It's really just not worth worrying about. I'm afraid it's all just willy waving.

Bang on. There’s a lot of people who comment without knowledge. The tip isn’t as great in base models but in the turbo in my eyes it’s a perfect inbetween from Manual and leg ache. It changes quicker than a manual and if you wish to gun it, sport mode + 2nd and 3rd gear is all you need. The fun doesn’t last long if your right foot it flat so I tend to 1/2 or 3/4 throttle it most of the time.

From a tuners perspective, its easier to upgrade with a tiptronic than manual... since the manual clutch must be replaced when upping the horsepower. Also, once upgraded.. the torque is incredibly strong and flat from 2000-6000rpm .. there is little to little gear shifting needed when doing spirited driving on the road or a typical 1-2 mile track. With the Tip, basically only uses 2nd and 3rd gear .. 4th and up are for saving gas.. and nobody knows why there is a 1st gear??

I've got a .1 tt manual and you've missed the mark considerably. It's fine if you need to justify the Tip but make no bones about it the manual is by far the better option. If one is doing substantial power upgrades as I've done, replacing the clutch with a more substantial single mass fly unit is really not a big deal and truly transforms the car. Driving twisty roads and short courses requires all manner of shifting prowess, heel toe and rowing of the gear box - remember the car is geared for 200mph but it's not by any means geared "tall" especially on 1-2-3 positions

I desided to testdrive the tiptronic too, just in case and i can tell you i prevered it over the manuel! Me personal, i think in this type of car with all its power the tiptronic is a better choise... For me it's nice to drive it relaxed in town in auto, instead of poking arround in the gears. But if you deside to race it put it in manuel and use the tiptronic to shift faster than manuel, its not a PDK but its not bad either... My advise to you if your interested in buying one, dont believe the hype and try them both!! Anyway you cant go wrong with both of them, its an absolute beast!! Its a very underestimated car with the last Mezger engine, prices will go up!

Then bought the wife a Boxster in 2013with PDK and that was and still is stunning. Tip doesn’t work well on track but PDK is fantastic... also ignore everyone that says you have to have optional paddle shift as opposed to buttons on wheel... I had both and preferred the ability to use you thumb palm to flick gear on both side of steering wheel. Hardly ever used the stalk based flippers on my Cayenne.

Most of the time, with sports cars or sporty cars, I’d prefer a manual for that extra element of connectedness to the vehicle and driving experience; however, I know what you mean and have felt the same way about other cars including the Audi B5 S4 and the Mk7 Golf R. The auto gearbox (whether true auto or DSG) can be the better way to go. For the B5 S4, with its softer suspension, the car would porpoise during gear changes while the tiptronic would not - the latter being more controlled and having a more seamless stream of power, too. Not to mention, the less than ideal shifter feel of that manual Audi gearbox. The same gearbox issue is present with the VWs, but I’d say even more so, the reason for choosing the DSG in the R, is the fact that the DSG seems to be a better pairing to the R’s motor characteristics - if that makes sense.

This video brings some very good points. I own a 996.2 GT3 Clubsport in Tokyo - and have many Porsche mates. While I'm a manual person myself, I think the tiptronic is a very solid unit. Many of us here in the Japanese Porsche community do respect the 997.1 LHD Tip as the "best buy" - no PDK issues that could cost a fortune (starting with the 997.2), the last mezger, and vastly cheaper than a manual. And significantly more power than the 996. Of course one can argue that the 996 turbo tiptronic is the best buy - 15% less than the 997, and a significantly more edgier design. But if you don't like the design of the 996, or it's slightly blunter handling, and the HP deficit - the 997.1 Turbo is a tremendously appealing car, for those who want to really put on the miles, without the constant worries. It may be different in London - but here the 997.1 Turbo Tip, is the under-the-radar car that can be used for daily errands, can be driven by the wife, and can go for the 320kph blast down the Wangan, chasing the GTRs, and GT3s. All without any tuning, that could put significant stress on the bodyframe.
