Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS: “The best car I’ve ever driven” - Auto Express
Can the new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS really be the best driver's car money can buy? Our man Steve Sutcliffe thinks it is as he puts it through its paces on road and on track.

Squeezing the 4.0-litre naturally-aspirated flat-six and seven-speed PDK gearbox from the 911 GT3 in a smaller and more lightweight package was always going to make the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS a firecracker. But having got behind the wheel, Steve Sutcliffe reckons it ranks as one of the all-time greats. It's louder, lower and wider than other Caymans, and it produces more downforce and records a Nürburgring laptime 23.6 seconds faster than the 'standard' Cayman GT4. It's a masterclass in performance and dynamics. And yours for £108,370.

He’s not under rated by those that know. It’s just that know. It’s just that the obnoxious KZreadrs get so much attention but all they really do is talk about the car they “just ordered” and don’t talk about the driving dynamics of the vehicle because they are in it for attention and not to drive.

There are cars I’ve wanted to own at some point in my life, many of which I never will. This Porsche Cayman GT4 RS just went to the top of that list. That noise from the induction is utterly sensational, I can only imagine how incredible it sounds in person. Bravo Porsche GT division. Finally, a review of this car with one of the best car journalists, a voice valued in the game, part of the great old school UK car journalists. Thanks Steve for this amazing review! And what a car, Porsche nailing it, as always. A very well deserved goodbye to the combustion engine Cayman.
Steve Sutcliffe has been right about the Cayman in every video that the team produced for him. So, the GT4 RS is the Pinnacle. Likewise a bit of sadness is settling in that we are now at the end of the road with ICE. I will hold on to my 981GTS in recognition that no EV will ever replace the joy of driving that these cars have given us.......

Steve Sutcliffe, is without a doubt, my all time favorite automotive journalist. Thanks for all of the awesome video reviews, Steve. Cheers.
Porsche has what... 5 cars in the top-10 Nurnburgring best lap times for the production cars. They're in the league of their own. However while the new models are much better and faster cars I still prefer the old air cooled 911's over the new 911's. There is just something about them. Cayman feels much more like the traditional G-model, 964 and 993 because it's smaller and has more "road feeling". Definitely the car to go now over HUGE 991 and 992 (if you want a new one). Cheers.

Sorry to add a second comment but I just have to echo the remarks made about Steve Sutcliffe. He is without question the best car reviewer both in videos and in writing. And an absolutely superb driver. Lapped Silverstone in a Honda F1 .4 of a second behind the team’s test driver. Clearly not an Oxbridge graduate but his prose is elegant and eloquent (see his articles for EVO), so he must be self-taught. Just the best. So very glad to see that others see him the same way.
You'd almost think he likes it.
I have read and watched reviews by Steve since his Autocar days. Clearly an excellent driver, a hand as they are known in the trade. No show boating no moaning about no out of date and useless in today’s traffic manual gearbox just a proper review. Pity most people will never own one due to Porsche’s policy of keeping volumes low and values high. In fairness, not many people have the talent to control this car, including me.
I’m glad I put my headphones on! That sound and Steve’s enthusiasm for the Porsche gave me goosebumps!
The best review of this model on KZread. Thank you.
Favorite review of the GT4RS today so far--recognizing this is the last of an ear where the curtains are coming down soon.
If Steve says it’s the best car he’s ever driven then that’s enough for me
No I have not arrived on the wrong video, it’s Steve Sutcliffe I have come to respect and listen 🎧 to his emotive definitions of the history of the motor vehicle in all its shapes and colours. When Steve says something about a car “I listen” .. in the final dining embers of motoring history I value everything I can get.. VAG will soon renounce the motor car and pin their hopes on The new generation of EV’s and that will be for a new generation who never really knew the brilliance of the motor car. Of one thing I am sure EV’s will never shine quite so bright as these examples of motoring, faster yes, cleaner yes, synthetic yes. But never emotively connected with mankind’s soul.
I love my Cayman GTS, but this takes it to another level for the serious driver.

Porsche will NEVER admit to it. For business reasons if I were them neither would I. This thing is faster around the ring than a GT3 . . . Now if we could only get someone that's NOT a Porsche affiliated driver to run a hot lap round' the ring revealing the REAL time.

@@Fastvoice I agree. Even as a GT4 owner in the queue for a GT4RS I admire the incredible career of Jorg's, his driving skill, and the fact that he spent over 500 hours with this car during its development. So I have every faith the GT3 is quicker on the ring (though not 0-100 or 0-200 kmph) due to its more advanced front end steering. Even so the GT4RS time of 7min 4 secs is epic and fast enough for me!

I dreamt of having a GT4 since the introduction of the 981. Last year it finally became real (mindblowing - and it still is). This a tribute to celebrate the superiority of the naturally aspirated engine from Porsche, this engine shows the pinnacle of mechanical engineering craftsmanship similar to the mechanical movement of a haute horology. As a mare mortal I may never drive this GT4 RS talk-less of owning one so I bought a base 987.2, this is the best I can afford for London’s overcrowded 20mph road. This car is a legend in the making. Mark my words.
Maybe instead of spending lots of money on noisy exhaust systems, owners of earlier and lower-spec Boxsters and Caymans might just want to replace the engine cover that is over the engine for a version without all of the sound insulation. Kind of like the GT4RS has. Voila -- more noise for the driver, no change for outsiders.

End of an era mate.
I think Porsche always had it in the back if their mind that a ground-up mid engined new design like the Cayman might actually be better than their flagship 911's, even though Porsche had engineered a flawed rear engined car to an amazingly good degree, but this GT4RS might just be the car to take that title. Porsche dropped the six cylinder Cayman and Boxters and replaced them with turbo charged flat fours just to restore some clear water between the top of the range 911's and the Cayman/Boxters but had to re-introduce the six cylinder cars due to the lack of demand for the four cylinder machines.
1:33 my morning song
Steve Sutcliffe is the OG of all motoring journalists. He mentored Chris Harris and doesn't it show. Now, if this guy says it's the best car he's ever driven, we had all better start saving up our money.
As far as this vs it's bigger brother? Simply put is about 17 seconds or so on the ring in favor of the GT3RS. However, for the money? It's 2 seconds past a 7 minute ring time which is still impressive as hell! There is one thing I've noticed about this car as its appeared online vs in person. I've seen the base model in person. It's somewhere between the size of a miata and a kompressor. 7 minutes and change? That size? 🥴 with that said it looks like a 911 on camera. In person? It's like a miniaturized body of that car. So the imagery on media doesn't do it justice.
I‘d like to be able to drive like Steve Sutcliffe 🏆
