Porco Rosso is my favorite Ghibli movie, and even amongst my favorite movies of all time. I really love watching well thought out analyses like this one as I feel its one of the less talked about Ghibli films.
2:57 the subsquent response from one of the one men is "is that from Shakespeare?" but in the japanese language version, the respone is "is that from Lord Byron". Quite interesting in this context.

In Danish the old man asks "was that Byron"? 😊 I really enjoy it when the Danish translation is closer to the original work than the English translation.
This channel is as underrated as Porco Rosso itself. Great analysis, keep on posting videos

I know you haven’t posted in a year but… you should do more like this with other Miyazaki films
it's weird thinking about porco as a byronic hero, but he totally is! this was a great video essay about a lovely movie
absolutely excellent
I guess Porco Rosso is inspired by Hugo Pratt comic book character, Corto Maltese, who is also a very clear byronic hero, which I also recommend to read or to watch the 2002 Italo-French animated series.
It's a fantasy of mine to go deeper into film theory... So I appreciate any material that can easily be understood and that provides meaningful insights to the subject. This video is fantastic. I love this movie, both (Howl's and Porco) are actually my favorites from Ghibli c: Thank you! Now I appreciate it a little bit more. And, from your examples I guess my favorite Byronic Hero is Megamind XD I have also seen Lelouch from Code Geass counts as one... c: Have a nice life!

This is, without question, one of the better and more nuanced narrative and thematic deep-dive videos I’ve seen in absolute ages. Appreciate not being hit over the head with what the video creator’s personal interpretations of what to takeaway too, and instead being offered examples and prompts that tie back to archetypes, etc. Allows one to formulate and ferment connections and additional questions. Keep up the good work, appreciate it!
The only Hayao Miyazaki Character that I Can Relate
I didn't know about the byronic hero, but thanks to you I have a pretty good grasp on it now. Fantastic video for a fantastic movie!

Your presentation is excellent. You must be an amazing person. Thank you
I went looking for video essays after a re-watch of PR and this was easily the best one. Great job!
The analysis of the movie in this essay is unmatched. I can not overstate how much I love this.
Porco Rosso is a story for a mature audience. Good video.
my favorite Ghibli film. Thanks for uploading this essay!
very well written essay, great sources and explanations of the byronic hero and Porco Rosso!
What a lovely analysis! Good job! :)
This is great, thank you and keep it up
Thanks for this deep analysis video!
loved this movie and loved this video. great work!
This is a great video, thanks for putting it together. Love Porco Rosso!
You did quite well in your explanation of a Byronic hero and how Porco embodied it. Remember, 'brevity is the soul of wit' does not mean using the smallest amount of words possible to describe something hard-stop, it means using the minimum amount of words to describe something well.
Why hasn't this gotten much more views?
Great video, very understandable and clear.
Thank you! Just wonderful!
Lovely breakdown!

This was great! PR is by far my favourite film of theirs, and there was a lot to chew on for sure, the only thing I would mention would be to maybe offer a few more moments of quiet during the video essay so the audience can mull over the information that's being delivered. Otherwise, fantastic stuff!
Love your videos
Ah, the big question! Does Marco ever visit Gina in her private garden? Well, even though Fio teases the viewer with her final comment, the answer is obviously "Yes." Recall towards the end of the film (around 01:29:00 mins), we hear Fio's voiceover mentioning how she eventually became president of the Piccolo Aircraft Company. We see a modern jet seaplane fly over Gina's Hotel/Island - and what do we see parked by a short jetty outside Gina's private garden, but a very familiar looking red seaplane. Blink and you'll miss it, but it's definitely there.
Thank you so much for this video.
Great work
This is really good.

At the end of the movie you can see Porco's plane anchoring at Gina's private pier, hinting a happy end for both

Fio says she never meets porco rosso never again, so I doubt that’s his plane. If it is his plane, then he most probably died and Gina took his plane as a souvenir.

@@TheReasonableSkepticist She never meets Porco Rosso again, because after she kisses him, he becomes Marco again. Regarding the plane, it really is the red Savoia. Gina could not kept the plane as a keepsake, because Porco left with it during the raid
Awesome video. Felt like 40 minutes of material condensed down to 15
Roy Mustang from FMA, especially in Brotherhood, would be an example of this.
New video! 🥳🎉🎊🎆
I disagree with the words "inability to relate". He was charming and popular, people cheer for him when they see him, he was smooth with women at least in one scene and with other pilots. It's more like he chose to not to relate with people. He put a curse on himself to separate himself from humanity which is the more unique aspect of this film.

In a way his Rejection is an "Inability to relate", Other people are drawn to him, but his rejection is due to an inability to relate to them. Especially as the world and the people around him become nationalistic fascists even after having to deal with the human brutality of WW1 and the Great Depression. He's unable to relate to that.
Very good I love porco rosso
Any more videos? :)
I love Romanticism
I think it‘s important to re-examine the meaning of the pig thing in the context of the path Porco has taken vis a vis his peers/society at large. It seems an obvious interpretation to say that it symbolizes the loss of his humanity. And yet, a huge number of the commissioned officers (not talking about the ordinary soldiers, in fact there is a pretty significant class divide here) from WWI, probably a majority, became fascists. At the very least they went on to serve the fascist state in the next, even more horrific war. None of them became pigs in this film. It‘s only Porco, who is the big dissenter in this development, who loses his human form. Better a Pig, than a fascist, right? And, of course, the answer to the question of which of them is actually more human should be obvious. And yet, it‘s also fair to ask whether „humanity“ is even the correct category to work with here. After all, all these humans do have it in them to become mass-murdering monsters, all while staying completely human. And Porco as a human had it in him to kill all these other people during the war. If there is such a thing as essentially human, clearly it includes the bad things. Probably the essential thing about Porco is that being a pig sets him apart from the path that everyone else (in his peer group anyway) has taken in life. He has become a good man, and this is incidental to being human or not, or maybe it‘s even inhuman in the sense that if he had stayed human he would have stayed on the path of evil (mass murder). Not that all humans took that path, but the people who used to be in Porco‘s position certainly did. So the idea that he has intentionally chosen his own apparent dehumanization makes a lot of sense.

Also it was common in most mid century fascist groups to insult people with "Pig" "Swine" etc. He's physically embodying the attitude of "If I'm not with you, I guess I'm a Pig. Better a Pig than a Fascist."
ciao, grazie and preggo
