Porcellio ornatus Isopod Care Guide

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Isopods are some of the best pet invertebrates! In this video, I discuss Porcellio ornatus, the ornate isopod. I introduce this isopod species, show some popular and new morphs and localities, and then discuss care for this isopod species. Finally I talk about this species’ suitability for bioactive vivaria as a member of a cleanup crew and its potential as a pet/display isopod species.
Thanks to www.smug-bug.com/ for allowing me to use some photos of their beautiful Porcellio ornatus isopods! Smug Bug is a great source for isopods and supplies, several of the isopod colonies I have come from Smug Bug.

Porcellio ornatus is such a strange Porcellio. I even heard snake discovery discussing If they should even be classified as Porcellio. But they still are so beautiful!

I have just discovered this species and immediately love the yellower, and high yellow colourings. They remind me of a P. spinicornis a little, but even more painted! Brand new sub to the channel, but the analytical breakdown of keeping these animals is super handy. I will be looking at your videos for aaaaaaall the (many) isopods I have on my list.

i've ordered from smug bug twice (actually waiting on my second order to ship tomorrow, lol) and i had a great experience with my first order - except that i got about 20 powder oranges (and a blue, maybe a couple yellow/white...) in with one of the isopods i ordered (venezillo parvus), but they were really nice and gave me a partial refund because i had to spend several hours separating all the individuals in that cup, and i'm happy because i got a free culture out of it, of an isopod i wasn't planning to buy but i think they're really cute they told me it was probably the moss that had been invaded, not the parvus culture, and that it was immediately looked into, so i wouldn't worry too much about that if you order from them - just check over the culture before adding to a bin and it should be fine :) AND i got a free chocolate zebra in with my vulgare orange vigors, which was so funny because i said "there's a surprise zebra in my oranges!"

i'm honestly really surprised parvus isn't more popular - i've heard they can make a great cuc (although i can't test this because i currently only keep isopods as pets), they reproduce somewhat quickly from what i've researched, and they're basically tiny armadillidium vulgare in looks i call them seed bead isopods because they're so tiny when balled up and i work with 2mm-3mm seed beads that are about the same size lol

I'm sorry for the lengthy question but for awhile now I've been finding a good amount of dead isopods in one of my enclosures I originally thought it was because of all the milipedes in the same area but I've narrowed it down to some sort of mite after examining a big armadilidium that was dead after just recently being alive and I saw an extremely tiny mite and the issue is before it died I moved him into another enclosure and now I'm worried the mites will start killing this enclosure off also please can you give any advice to get rid of these mites ?

just found this video, my apartment (to my dismay) has a hole in the outside wall and I figured that's where they're coming from. Now I would rather find a peaceful solution to get rid of them, so if anyone has any advice? I'm all ears. I killed a few before I knew what they were; I thought they might have been roaches at first. Which surprised me because my apartment is very clean. I can't seal the hole yet, as I don't have my landlords permission, he said he'd come by to check it out. So anything helps thank you.
