Porcellio ornatus Isopod Care Guide
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
Isopods are some of the best pet invertebrates! In this video, I discuss Porcellio ornatus, the ornate isopod. I introduce this isopod species, show some popular and new morphs and localities, and then discuss care for this isopod species. Finally I talk about this species’ suitability for bioactive vivaria as a member of a cleanup crew and its potential as a pet/display isopod species.
Thanks to www.smug-bug.com/ for allowing me to use some photos of their beautiful Porcellio ornatus isopods! Smug Bug is a great source for isopods and supplies, several of the isopod colonies I have come from Smug Bug.

Porcellio ornatus is such a strange Porcellio. I even heard snake discovery discussing If they should even be classified as Porcellio. But they still are so beautiful!
I have just discovered this species and immediately love the yellower, and high yellow colourings. They remind me of a P. spinicornis a little, but even more painted! Brand new sub to the channel, but the analytical breakdown of keeping these animals is super handy. I will be looking at your videos for aaaaaaall the (many) isopods I have on my list.
Great video Rus. P. ornatus High Yellow is in my top 2! (and thanks for the mention).
i've ordered from smug bug twice (actually waiting on my second order to ship tomorrow, lol) and i had a great experience with my first order - except that i got about 20 powder oranges (and a blue, maybe a couple yellow/white...) in with one of the isopods i ordered (venezillo parvus), but they were really nice and gave me a partial refund because i had to spend several hours separating all the individuals in that cup, and i'm happy because i got a free culture out of it, of an isopod i wasn't planning to buy but i think they're really cute they told me it was probably the moss that had been invaded, not the parvus culture, and that it was immediately looked into, so i wouldn't worry too much about that if you order from them - just check over the culture before adding to a bin and it should be fine :) AND i got a free chocolate zebra in with my vulgare orange vigors, which was so funny because i said "there's a surprise zebra in my oranges!"

i ordered 10 Agabiformius lentus in that same order, and they sent me around 30, which was a total surprise and really nice (i DID think they were all dead for a few minutes but it turns out they play dead really well, and they were all alive!)
Love this species

1:08 you got those from Smug Bug?!?! How kool! ...I just recently started ordering through her website, and I absolutely LOVE the Smug Bug selection and how they package/ship them safely. And I enjoy your videos!...they are very informative and helpful as I have only been in the isopod hobby for about a year and your videos have helped me along the way!
Those are very cool isopods collection rus
Great video like always
Happy to see the pods doing good Russ can't wait tell I can get some of these
very cool Rus, thanks once again for sharing with us such an interesting and informative video.
Great video! Isopod diversity never ceases to amaze me.
Thank you Russ.

I'm from Spain, and here in the south the yellow dot variety is very common everywhere you go, they started breeding soon after I got them. I'm now trying to get some high yellow ones

That is so cool! I would love to see these in their native habitat!
Love at first sight on the Nord patterning. I've gotten mine so far from Smug Bug. Excellent seller; my new colonies are doing so well.
Great video! I might just get some high yellows!
Great care guide video! I wouldn't mind one about a less flashy, but still somewhat peculiar species like Nagurus cristatus...
I love Wally at supreme gecko!!! I also love smug bug!
I was just about to comment on your new video about this species! Thanks man

Looking forward to the arrival of my P. ornatus High Yellow later this week. I'm in southern Spain - I'm not sure if this species extends to my locality but once the current heat wave ends and we get some isopod-friendly weather, I'm looking forward to seeing what's out there!
Is a video on Porcellio scaber coming out? They are one of the most common ones after all
nice
I jumped the gun because I have no patience and I'm getting my first P. scabers next week. Got some lavas and some sex-linked calicos from Smug-bug and I'm so excited.

I thought I saw a couple in there!
So these are more voracious eaters than Laevis? Also I love how Wasp-like the high yellow are.
Armadillidium Klugi? I just ordered some and I don't want to screw it up 😂 Btw, I haven't had luck with isopods. I tend to get thriving colonies that suddenly die off. After watching your videos, I believe that I wasn't providing enough of a moisture gradient. I'm gonna study up with your videos again before they arrive. Thank you for the useful content!
@Aquarimax

A great suggestion ! A. klugii is a bit picky...make sure they get good ventilation, no misting, bone dry on the dry side, but of course with a hydration station. Plenty of hiding places on both sides 👍🏽
have you considered doing a video on venezillo parvus (or canariensis)? they're super cute and little, i can easily hold 50+ in my hand
@SkwithOv
7 ай бұрын
i'm honestly really surprised parvus isn't more popular - i've heard they can make a great cuc (although i can't test this because i currently only keep isopods as pets), they reproduce somewhat quickly from what i've researched, and they're basically tiny armadillidium vulgare in looks i call them seed bead isopods because they're so tiny when balled up and i work with 2mm-3mm seed beads that are about the same size lol

just got "Trichorhina tomentosa" and "Porcellionisdes pruinosus" that i plan on keeping as cultures and cleanup crew for my dart frogs any thing i need to be aware off? thank you for the great videos
Hi Rus, I'd love to see a species profile of Armadillidium frontetriangulum - have just bought 10 from a supplier here in southern Spain. I think they're from Corfu, Greece, but there doesn't seem to be much information available on them.
I'd be really interested in hearing more about p. Scaber genetics and morphs
@Aquarimax
3 жыл бұрын
I could definitely do a whole video (series?) on that species’ genetics/morphs
@kylebunch6036
3 жыл бұрын
@@Aquarimax that would be really cool! There are so many morphs and mutations within the scabers! I personally think they are underrated.
Do you have armadillidium werneri? If so, can you do a video on them? I can't find much information on their care
I'm sorry for the lengthy question but for awhile now I've been finding a good amount of dead isopods in one of my enclosures I originally thought it was because of all the milipedes in the same area but I've narrowed it down to some sort of mite after examining a big armadilidium that was dead after just recently being alive and I saw an extremely tiny mite and the issue is before it died I moved him into another enclosure and now I'm worried the mites will start killing this enclosure off also please can you give any advice to get rid of these mites ?
Noob Question.. Are Armadillidium Vulgare Red and Orange Vigor actually the same species?
Werneri Orange?
Do have any updates about your yellows(not the dots)? I currently have some and am trying to learn more but they don't seem very popular. Thank you!

I’ve still got a colony of high yellows, they re not the hardiest or most prolific of my Ornatus, but they are doing ok.

@@Aquarimax interesting. I have 5 of them and have had them for a little over 6 months with zero babies. Been trying to figure out if I was careing for them incorrectly, which is what led me to your videos.. which btw thank you for making them! And responding also! Guess I will continue to wait and see since they all seem to be staying alive at least 😅
anyone experience with ceeping them in a big big jar? i leave the lid open, but i am thinking abour reducing the ventilation. but no cross ventilation so maybe just open. i am keeping track of the humidity in the spaghnum moss

High yellows are the bane of my existence currently. Die off after die off. I’m ready to give up on them.

Question, can you put the same sub species together if you buy them from a different breeder? Will they fight?

@@Aquarimax thank you so much 😄
just found this video, my apartment (to my dismay) has a hole in the outside wall and I figured that's where they're coming from. Now I would rather find a peaceful solution to get rid of them, so if anyone has any advice? I'm all ears. I killed a few before I knew what they were; I thought they might have been roaches at first. Which surprised me because my apartment is very clean. I can't seal the hole yet, as I don't have my landlords permission, he said he'd come by to check it out. So anything helps thank you.
