Can you spot the difference to Ricky Gervais, Conan O'Brien, Graham Norton, or Craig Fergusson getting celebs uncomfortable and asking nonsensical questions? Or Ali G / Borat messing around with people? They are entertaining. This guy is not. And why is it so? Because the nonsense made by the other entertainers isn't just random, boring bullshit. It's created out of the situation. Because they have talent and humor. This guy not. This guy simply isn't absurd and creative enough to create a weird Ali G / Borat situation with his guest, nor has he the charm and witty humor of the other show men to get celebs out of their comfort zone.

Has this dude ever heard about the wild concept of combing your hair?

Actually it looks like she was possibly not treated well by someone or someones prior to the cameras going on. She is a happy person most all of the times I’ve seen her in interviews. And smiling the whole time she is singing. For her to respond so flatly to this interviewer, to me that suggests that she is not great about faking having a good time. Just my opinion. I have never gotten the slightest sense that she has “no personality” like others here have suggested in the comments.

Oh wow so awkward it hurts, her reaction to the eggs question made me laugh. The interviewer is called Alex Zane and his sense of humour is awkward comedy, she obviously didn't get it.

@@nicbentulan The show was just a fuck about. The joke was these stuck up stars would expect SERIOUS questions about their new album and HOW THEY LOVE IT AND HOW GREAT IT IS. The actual questions are irrelevant really. Check out the Britney Spears one, that's how to deal with it correctly. She was asked if she's ever licked a battery and she took it in good spirits.

Lavigne is very dumb

I will be looking for other interviews with her. This company or interviewer clearly did a very poor job of treating her well before cameras went on. And this comes through in the interview. She isn’t fake, and it looks like she couldn’t fake a bad situation and pretend it was good. I have seen before that she is a wonderful young lady.

That's exactly what I was thinking! Something happened before the interview even happened, and you could tell she no longer wanted to participate. She kept looking off to what I assume is her team, probably wanting them to end it.

Are you kidding me? You score an interview with Avril Lavigne and this is the best they can dig up to interview her? She does have a personality only when the interviewer is not a clown.

It was the point of the show. Britney Spears' one was equally as silly but she isn't stuck up her own arse and took it well.

She needed to play along with it like any person being interviewed should. However, he should have CLEARLY seen that she was into it. He needed to adapt, and he needed to do it quick. But instead, he didn't.. he just kept continuing on with unfunny jokes.

This show didn't care about serious interviews with stars and to pander to them. It was to take the piss out of them and confuse them.

I am ROTF laughing. He was cleverly taking the pi55 out of her. Loved it to bits.

I am a HUGE Avril fan, but I really do have to say that I think that it was HER that came across as stand offish and impolite during this interview. Alex Zane by no means is/was the best interviewer, but the whole tone and premise of these Popworld interviews was to be as bizarre and random as possible. It wasn’t ever to be taken seriously and was just supposed to be a bit of fun. If I didn’t know any better and just had this one interview to go off, I would think that the poor girl just doesn’t know how to have a good time. Watch any other Popworld interview from the mid-late 2000s and they are basically satire. Avril just didn’t want to play along and, honestly, I think it made her look worse than it did Alex. Maybe it’s because I’m British and grew up watching this show before going to school every day, but I think that too many people who don’t understand the premise of this show are giving Alex unnecessary flack for what is actually Avril’s issue.

i mean i guess (though i live in canada and haven’t seen any other interviews of this type nor grew up with them) but i do know that avril has the tendency to become uncomfortable in situations like these (especially in her earlier years) i think that she was just really uncomfortable and she probably shouldn’t have done this interview if thats what the theme of it was

Whether it was intended to be cringey or not it doesn't change the fact that I felt so uncomfortable watching this guy ask the most random questions. But Avril's reactions and face expression just made it so relatable. I think she's one of the greatest people you could be friends with.

The problem is he's not the best interviewer in the world and she's not the best interviewee because she's shy and not very outgoing, so it's just a clash which results in an awkward interview. I don't think he means to make her uncomfortable and she doesn't mean to be rude, think she just starts to feel on edge too easily.

I don't think she is shy and not outgoing, you can clearly see that in her interviews that she is really friendly and in a good mood. It really was just the interviewer's fault, and definetly not hers. Would anyone feel comfortable if they asked him/her dumb things like he did? Not really, actually

She obviously didn't get his humour. That can happen, the mistake Alex made was instead of just asking the questions in a normal manor, he carried on trying to be funny and taking the piss.

To everyone criticising Alex Zane and kissing Avril's backside... this isn't the first time she's been awkward in an interview. Reading teenage mags back in the day; several celebs have called her difficult during interviews, including Emma Willis. Watching her fiddle with her hair that much was more annoying

I analyzed this interview a bit. To me, it seems that the interviewer is "flirting" a bit with her. She does not really "respond" to the flirting, so he tries to "ridiculize" her and the proposal a bit at the end by asking these egg questions and whether she has these "weird" super powers or not. All in all, I think it is just "human" nature to feel attraction towards somebody, but of course, this interview could have been done a bit better and more "enjoyable" for the viewers.

I think Avril was probably having a shit day 😂

*TruthOasis* Not sure to whom you're speaking, but "American" was probably thrown in for two reasons; there's often discussion regarding the systemic inability for many Americans to understand and resonate with British humour, and most people here stating that they believe his sense of humour to be unfunny *are* American.

I almost think the awkwardness was done on purpose it's so ridiculous. Her hotness made up for it though.

Watch the older interviews with Avril, dude. She had a fire personality, and even when toned down, she had opinions and things to say. It doesn't make sense. Either Avril needed some time off and her management employed a double to keep her appearances up, or Avril is just on some strong as shit antidepressants that have murdered her zest for life. I don’t think it was much of the interviewers fault. Although the questions were weird lol. Avril seemed shy. Some people can’t handle weird questions. And there is people who can handle them. So it wasn’t much of her fault either

when people refer to Americans its usually referred to people from the United states, the fact that America is in the name of the country should be a no brainer.The rest of the Americas is usually referred by their country's given name. Hence when asked someone from the us their nationaality they would say American and people from canada...canadians

My Ex who is my current best friend told me that Advril reminded her of me by how she acts annoyed in interviews. This is awesome to see. 😁🤮 I'd love to interact with her out of curiosity.

Lol this show was a music comedy show, the previous 2 presenters had just left after 6 years and were very funny. They got this guy and another guy to replace them and they couldnt really pull off the jokes very well and it came across odd so they cancelled the show after 1 year.

She may have just seen it as someone making fun of her, thought she was 'above' his humor, or was just completely confused. Perhaps a bit of each, but given her expressions, also the result of a fair ego. The comedy here would probably have to be back and forth between both of them in order to work. Perhaps Canada just drives on the complete opposite side of the road when it comes to comedy, but I doubt it
